I love how she mixes an ancient Medieval hymn with Arabic/Moroccan rhythms. Stunning.
@soufimostafavikashani85573 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking too, but I'm not sure about it...cause the rhythm can be middle eastern belonging to ancient Israel or Hebrew music, but I'm just guessing...

Really love this carol... Though historical ages are often up for debate, this carol traces to the late 15th or very early 16th century. The Fall of Constantinople (1453 I believe?) is a very convenient demarcation point for the of the high middle ages and the beginning of the renaissance. In any case, her incredible work in exploring world musicians blending styles is glorious! She works incredibly hard to ensure as much authenticity in dialect and style in most of her recordings. This is no exception.

Being a native french speaker, i'd say that it sounds different because of both the old french (still very understandable, though) and her english accent. Canadians have a different accent when speaking French, but I really hear more of her english accent than french canadian there. Anyway, this sure is a lovely melting pot, very much in the unique style of LMcK, for a great song.

@musicmaker145 Actaully, if you check, most of the choirs sing it at a much faster pace. Loreena slowed it down enough to allow the beauty of the melody to come through. The Anuna version is also a lovely rendition, I'm always open to different interpretations, as long as it fits the sense of the words and music.

I'm no expert in French languages, but I suspect that vowels have shifted over time. An example: One of the major differences between Middle English and Modern English is the pronunciation of vowels. The word "he" in ME was pronounced like "hay", but the vowel shifted and it now sounds like "hee". I don't know if that's what happened in the transition from Old French to Modern French, but I suspect that's why some of McKennitt's vowels sound different than Modern pronunciation: Vowel Shifts.
