So I grew up listening and playing Hendrix and Pink Floyd and still to this day am in 3 bands gigging classic rock most weekends. After I designed up and built my new fretless guitar (to be electrically bowed, only) I wen't searching for music types that this very different guitar would be a compliment to. During my youtube searching I stumbled upon this video and recognized the name of the artist. Her music was always playing in bookstores where my wife and I would take our little children to read and pick out a book but, since being a book store the music volume was always kept very low. Still, there was something in me that the sound of her music had perked and I now would take the time to see who this artist was, afterall. After this song was over, I sat gazing at the screen asking myself "what did I just hear, and what just happened to me"? I literally played this song 12-15 times in a row waiting for the magic to wear off but, It only kept growing and growing on me. Somehow, Loreena McKennitt's music had awakened some musical sensibility in me that I hadn't even known was there. She is know one of my favorite artists, ever, and she is inadvertently guiding my direction with this new and very different guitar that I made and am very excited about where it will take me, musically. For a guy who has been playing classic rock for 40 years, this is a huge and extremely welcome, mystifying and refreshing departure. I am very grateful for Loreena for her dedication to her art and the inspiration and direction that has come my way as of a result. Thank you, and thank you again, Loreena. Philip Donovan This a 15th Century religious mystery poem set to music. Written by a revered Spanish Catholic mystic, known to history as St. John of the Cross, or San Juan de la Cruz. it's the story of a lost soul being reunited with God in the form of the story of a young woman who steals away from her home into the night to be united with her True Love, a method by which many a plight was trothed, and many a marriage made in that time. Especially if a girl's family didn't favor her marriage to the man she loved as in Shakespeare's play of the star-crossed true lovers "Romeo and Juliet". It's haunting beauty arises from the beautiful expression of a transcendent love and the desperate night journey to achieve that longed for union. It could pass as a love poem between any two at any time ... His approach seems more akin to early Islamic or Judaic works in its more direct route to communication to his god ... I have gone over three different translations of the poem, and am struck by how much a translation can alter our interpretation. Am reminded that most holy scriptures come to us in translation, resulting in a diversity of views. My first guess was that the poem refers to this night staircase and doorway with "secret stair". But fra. Emiel Abalahin, a Carmelite like John of the Cross, explained that the meaning is deeper: "Dark Night of the Soul," like much of John's poetry, is based on "Song of Songs" from the Biblical Old Testament, and also on much of the romantic poetry and lyrics of Spanish popular balladry of that time, i.e., 16th century. The "secret stair" has less to do with a staircase in a monastery, and more to do with the popular theme of lovers meeting for a late night romantic tryst. In order for this to be possible, the young maiden of the song or poem would have to sneak out of the house, by the "secret stair." I watched this video and it seems like Loreena was singing to me actually singing to my soul. After watching the video I said to myself what just happened ? So I watched this over , over and over . No one has a voice like Lorenna McKennitt. You can always recognize it and love it. As far as who wrote the lyrics, I don't care. She puts them to music and gives them real feeling. Knowing that she lost her fiancee to an accident helps me identify with the song, since I too am a widower. I have been through my own "dark night of the soul". It is a lonely place, but also a place of testing. You live through it and become a whole person again or you give up, cave in, and become some miserable simulacrum of a human being. I survived.
