Action of one soldier acting on impulse, fearing for his life hardly can be taken into consideration as "lore" for film titled "Why Everyone Hated Imperial Scientists: Star Wars lore", that pilot knew Pershing was a good bargaining chip, he played his hand wrong though.

A lot of scientists weren't ever close to military combat before. In Rogue One Visual dictionary a lot of Galen Erso's scientist were forced to work for the Empire. They were all killed without a second thought. They were seen as equivalent to expendable stormtroopers as they would blab their mouths off if they were held at gun point. Dr. Pershing freaked out when he came into the room with the Client and Mando and Dr. Pershing covered his face when Mando was pointing a gun to him. The Client was very calm the whole time. Mando takes Grogu from Pershing and Pershing is begging for his life and asking Mando not to harm the child. The pilot probably knew Pershing would sing to Mando so he held him hostage knowing their is a reason Dr. Pershing's shuttle was under attack.

That was a very volatile time for the empire. Within the course of the great war, cold war, revanites, eternal fleet, etc, the empire saw many phases. It fluctuated between being unstoppable to on the brink of collapse several times.

I feel bad for some of the Imperial scientists that were forced to work for the Empire,Galen Erso for example. They basically had no choice in what they did for The Empire and chances are they or people they care for would've been killed for refusing to co-operate. Though I do like the fact Galen purposely made the Death Star's exhaust port a weakness.

Its odd that the NR didn't try to use any captured scientists to help them develop new technologies like the US and Soviets did with any Nazi scientists they either captured or who surrendered to them. A real life example would be Wernher von Braun and the Space Race

I think it's both that pilot is most likely have seen the destruction of one of the Death Stars or might even at the Battle of Jakku and see plenty of his friends get killed. And plus with the soldiers of the Empire lived in the not-so-good environment all the time, it is understandable. However, I still dislike this, of course. An imperial scientist is a very valuable asset just as much as the imperial pilot is in my sight.
