Thing is... I actually agree with what Lorenz said there. Strictly speaking, the things one should or must do really do have more importance than one's emotions, at least, if the person we're talking about doesn't have some sort of disorder/illness or even disability related to one's emotional state. Not that emotions and emotional health AREN'T important, but if able, one should prioritize necessities over feelings. And while I don't personally agree with avoiding inter-class marriage, his argument for doing so is rock-solid and then some. He's a noble from an important house, meaning the decisions he makes have weight, the weight to affect the lives of hundreds, potentially thousands of people, noble and commoner alike. Let's say wedding a commoner DOES sink his house's reputation- then House Gloucester might be removed from their position and replaced by a house less capable of doing House Gloucester's task as effectively. Or a better house, but even then, so much is at risk of ruin in this hypothetical situation just because he married a commoner. TL;DR I agree with the lines the prompted a roast from Mercedes, and I don't agree with his avoidance of commoner women, but I do agree with WHY he does it, and what he says to justify it.

Percival917 I 100% agree, honestly, I get the whole “love the one who you have feelings for” that basically most of his female supports have, but in this time and era, the responsibility of a noble is massive, and he shouldn’t risk it simply due to his feelings for someone that isn’t valid. Of course he becomes more accepting of commoners, but his reasoning is still valid nonetheless.

Percival917 I think the problem is not actually about marrying a noble girl or a commoner true love, but Lorenz's rivelry with Claude and his supporters. At beginning he might conclude that marrying a noble (like Hilda) would help, but post game he's already wrote his own name in history. He actually has confidence and power to defend his house and is free to marry a true love whether from noble family or not.

@@Percival917 agreed. modern culture is heavily individualistic, so sacrificing your feelings for the good of everyone else can be a bit jarring. we have to think about the standards at the time, where there was a significant split between nobility and the common folk, and nobles and royals married for political influence more than personal feelings (sure, arranged marriages made sure to pick compatible partners, but joining the families together were still top priority). in hindsight, maybe that is why the "commoner and noble get together" plot point is so appealing, because such an event was fairly rare in real life and would make for an interesting story

Lorenz's refusal to marry a commoner isn't anything to do with being shallow, it has to do with politics, as a commoner wouldn't add to his house, and it would be difficult for a commoner to join noble society, since the rules are different from commoner society

In Lorenz's support conversations with Dorothea, Mercedes and Catherine, the only thing that came to my mind is how shockingly ignorant all three of them are. They're living in a society that is clearly feudal, with a clear separation between nobles and commoners. How in the world could they possibly be so unfamiliar with the concept of nobility to find anything Lorenz was saying as shocking or surprising? As a noble, it is not only up to him to decide who he marries. Politics play a huge role in the decision, as well as whatever is best for the future of his family. Were he to fall in love with a commoner, but that union was not beneficial to his family, then the most that could ever come from that relationship would be for her to become a mistress. Should that role be unsatisfactory for her, despite being able to live in luxury that was unthinkable in her former position and being able to spend as much time with him as she wishes, then she is free to pursue a relationship with another commoner or a lesser noble who's not a direct heir and whose marriage has fewer political implications. This is just common sense for the type of society they live in. The fact that so many characters in the game couldn't understand that simple concept was baffling to me while playing the game.

One fun idea might be to have him mistrusting Byleth and intently watching him/her, while behind him Hubert makes faces, Edelgard puts her mask on and off, Tomas puts a "Kick me" sign on his back, Arundel nicks his wallet and Jeritza passes by with a duffle bag over his shoulder with Flayn's braid sticking out. Another might be the conversation in his paralogue where he explains that he decided to lie about being Flayn's brother to hide her from her enemies. Then cut to a deadpan Byleth who holds up two calender pages that show he and Flayn still list their birthdays as being on Saint Cichol and Saint Cethleann day.
