It should be noted that the Colonies had Battlestars prior to the Cylon Rebellion (the Artemis class [or if you're going off the slightly incorrect Caprica timeline, the Valkyrie class]). The ones promised to the Colonies after the outbreak of the war were the Jupiter class which were "The largest, most powerful Battlestars ever created".
