Ah, OoT. First LoZ game I ever played, and while I recognise it has flaws, it still stands as my #3 LoZ game. Thanks for the rumination. One thing though - while Majora's Mask has been picked apart for its themes/motifs, I've always felt that OoT doesn't get enough credit for its own. While many LoZ games have themes (as you've pointed out), and OoT has its own (growing up, nature of time, etc.), an idea I haven't seen discussed as much is that it exemplifies the theme of "you can't go home again." I actually see OoT as a tragedy, where a boy is forced to grow up before his time, ultimately losing his innocence and childhood. I feel this is best exemplified at the end - Navi leaving Link is, IMO, the final loss he suffers. The sign that he has become an adult, yet relegated to the body of a child. Sent back to a time where none will know of his deeds, where he never became friends with the sages or Malon, and is doomed to have an unfulfilled life. That Kaepora Gaebora speaks to Link for the last time at the Spirit Temple is no coincidence - Link will never see that owl again. He's lost the last part of his childhood. And in-game, it's the last time you need to play as child Link to progress (unless you do the Shadow Temple last). But anyway, great rumination.

I never had a problem with the third time line because I never saw it as an additional timeline. Instead I saw it as a completely separate alternate reality which was created in a scenario where Link dies in the final battle against Gannon. I like to think of the final battle against Gannon as a nexus point in time and space where infinite scenarios and fates for the kingdom of Hyrule were created due to the forces that were in play; specifically Gannandorf using such a large amount of power to transform into Gannon for the first time and the brief unification of all three pieces of the Triforce. This third time line is just one of many possible ways the kingdom could have been effected by the actions of Link, Gannon and Zelda. But as you say Arch that may just be me reading too much into it. Great video by the way. Glad to have these ruminations back. Its been far too long.

This is a great analysis. I must say that the number one thing I think this game is about in terms of theme is "time". It goes beyond the title. A lot of people complain about the dialogue in Zelda games, but I find that OOT does most of its storytelling visually through gameplay. Like Lorerunner says, the first part of the game is like children's stories - everything is upbeat and magical. When Link grows over, the temples don't have that same flavor of warmth - they are chilling. Its like when we people become adults, we are much more aware of the real dangers around us, much like Link discovers the horrors that Ganondorf has brought forth to Hyrule. I honestly wish this analysis was longer, because there is so much to talk about in this game.

I always thought that the three timelines are based on the three parts of the Triforce. Child Link is courage; Adult Link is wisdom; Link falling in battle with Ganon is power.

If you're creating a grand mega-setting, you may need multiple types of time travel. My solution is to say they're always the same within one multiverse, but there can be multiple multiverses in what I call a "pantoverse".

I understand what you're saying about the gold skulltulas, but I have to say, as a kid playing this, the house where the half human half spiders lived absolutely terrified me, and had terrific atmosphere, and bring the game some horror vibes, which is awesome. I was also motivated trying to rescue all the helpless humans. they felt so sad. I agree they are mostly about gameplay/exploration. but I also think they are tied to a pretty interesting, albeit small, narrative.

An interesting little tidbit. Right at the beginning of the game there's a single line of text that really stands out if you think about it. It's during Mido's rant if you talk to him without both the Kokiri Sword and a Deku Shield equipped. Before the line in question, Mido says 'I don't believe it! You aren't even fully equipped yet! How do you think you're going to help the Great Deku Tree without both a sword and shield ready?' The line I'm thinking of comes after, but before that, after the line I'm thinking of Mido says this to end his rant. 'If you want you pass through here, you should at least equip a sword and shield! Sheesh!' See, both of these lines have the same tone to them. Now here's the line between them. 'What? You're right. I don't have my equipment ready, but...' A lot of people assume this is Mido responding to a silent counterargument from Link that Mido isn't equipped either, but that wouldn't make sense since despite his feelings on the matter, Mido _knows_ he wasn't summoned. Mido knows that, and he makes sure to tell Link that he knows that, not to mention how he feels about it. Anyway, what this actually is, is Link's only spoken line in the game. It seems pretty clear that at some point in this game's development this Link wasn't going to be a silent protagonist. In the end they went the silent protagonist route, but when they were removing Link's dialogue they missed a spot. It's just something I've always found to be very interesting. One of at least a few glimpses at what might have been.

I think it's really interesting that you talk about the difference between sandbox/story-world immersion. And one of the greatest charms in Zelda I've always appreciated - probably its greatest - is that immersion. It's been what keeps me playing, and really what I think made such a big impact on me in regards to Ocarina of Time. In the ever-increasing gaming market for games that are more of a sandbox, it causes me to appreciate what Ocarina and the other Zelda have to offer, and cause me to see this awesome aspect of the game even more. In short, thank you for mentioning this. I too would rather have this immersion you're describing.

I'm halfway through Botw and even though it pushes the boundaries of a sandbox I find myself wishing it was more focused like Ocarina. The magic that I felt in Ocarina is just not there. Then again I was 16 when Ocarina came out. The magic of first playing it and waking up in kakarito village will never be topped.

The Fire Temple is much more prison - like than the forest temple in my opinion. The forest temple to me is more like a Manor/Mansion that has been used and partly restructured as a military base/fort, with barracks etc. And the 4 poe sisters could be the original inhabitants... perhaps they were violated and killed?

If Redeads aren’t people then where are the people? Did they migrate to new lands? Ganondorf killed everyone and their bodies didn’t reanimate? That just doesn’t make sense to me, other than Gandondorf killing everyone. Though at the same time we’ve seen instances of the dead being reanimated like the skeletons. If they aren’t people then what exactly are they? I get that their monsters but where did they come from? Why are they only appearing now in the place of townsfolk? They’re human zombies. The devs just had to pull something out of their asses so Nintendo wouldn’t hit them with the corporate Ban Hammer.

I too always found these games to dark and depressing. As a kid I always felt sorry for Link and his sad, lonely life. Then again I played these games really young and my first exposure was Majoras Mask and I wasn't prepared for that at all. Can't wait for your other videos. Also while I think Majora's Mask does have a lot to do with growing up like Ocarina it focuses more on accepting death than being an adult. Another thing about the time travel is that its inconsistent in the gameplay. The man who teaches you the song of storms only does so because you taught it to him in the past, so he teaches it to you in the future, thus you teach it to him in the past, ect. Yet, the magic beans don't work that way, you would think with the logic in play for the song of storms the magic beans should already be grown even if you haven't done so in the past. I don't think they put much thought into the overall logic of the universe yet outside of what was immediate to the story at the moment. Hopefully I'm not repeating anything that was said in the video.

Did you know that the link from twilight princess is a descendant of the link from this game and that he doesn't, in fact, become a stalfos. The Hero's Shade is more akin to the people that were turned into spirits due to the twilight coverin Hyrule in twilight princess. Also, the wars over the Triforce took place after Skyward Sword and before Minish Cap, during the 'Era of Chaos''. It was then that Rauru sealed the Master Sword. It is often speculated that the Interloper War was the same conflict, but the Seal War is a seperate event.

I never understood why there's an official timeline. These stories work better when considered as myth or folklore; it's the same story told over and over, embellished with every new telling. Even the ones that are somewhat connected are only loosely so. Takes the fun and speculation out of it with this three timeline schtick.

Personally I like the Ganondorf/Demise connection. I get your point about Ganondorf being cheapened by that. But I think it actually adds to the character. This actually goes to a theory I heard online about "Is Ganondorf Evil" and they gave the thought that not originally, but the nature of Demise took over forcing him down that path. Personally I like that concept myself. I think he originally was good, in the sense he wanted to help his people, but ultimately his nature from Demise took over. Or perhaps that was always there. Think about this, why was Demise even sealed in the first place? A war long ago with the Goddess Hylia and her people. Why was the war fought? Demise wanted control of the Triforce. Why? Power, a desire for control, a desire for rule, a desire to impose himself and his kind, demons, upon those who were less powerful. Now, let's take a look at Ganondorf. Why did he, by his own admission, seek to over throw the king? To help his people. How would he be able to achieve that? Power. Why did he seek the Triforce? Power. What did he crave most? Obviously power since that's the piece he ended up with (going back to the in game lore of that whoever touches the Triforce with an unbalanced heart, they gain the piece they want most and the others go to those who destiny, or the Goddesses, have chosen). So clearly he desired power. So what did he do in the years he was "King of Evil"? He literally lived as a king and made others miserable. Did he actually help his people? No, the Gerudo were never helped at all by what Ganondorf did. He wanted power for himself ultimately. So why did this happen? Well, without any further evidence, it was his own greed and his own lust for power. However, if you include the Demise origin, you see that the nature was always there. He didn't just decide "oh I think I'm going to turn my back on my people."No, instead you find that it was the curse at work to force him down that path of a desire for power. He doesn't care about his people during his 7 year rule over Hyrule. He doesn't care about his people even when he's defeated, he just wants revenge. What else does that tell you? It fits perfectly with Demise considering that is exactly what demise was after when he was defeated by Link. He had no concern about the demons, or even power at that point, he wanted revenge. The Demise factor really fits far more with Ganondorf's character than you'd think. Sure, I like the idea of him being a man who worked hard to get where he was. But him having some noble ambition and just happened to turn into a power hungry man bent on world domination at the cost of everyone else, just doesn't seem to fit in with how OoT told its story. The Demise explanation just seems to work better. Now, like I said, maybe he did desire to help his people at one time, but it's clear that during his 7 year reign he doesn't care about his people at all. His people live in the desert in poverty and misery just as they always had. You mentioned also that Link had no destiny, but if I remember correctly, isn't there something in Wind Waker that mentions him being chosen? Please correct me if I'm wrong (I hate giving out wrong info). I'm pretty sure, there was something mentioned. As for Link in every game, he's usually said to be a legendary hero in some way. Remember that according to the canon/lore set by OoT, only Link (the hero of Time, and his future incarnations one would assume) can use the sword. No other person can pick up and use it. They have to be a "chosen one" of whatever time/game. Also you mention Ganondorf's character in Twilight Princes and Wind Waker and how a he is a man who has descended into darkness. I disagree there strongly. Ganondorf in TP had no reason to hate Link or Zelda. His anger should have been directed at the sages (or rather the descendants of the sages at this point). Why? Because Link had very little to do with is imprisoning. Yes he told Zelda and she in turn told the King. However, it's very clear that Ganondorf had very little info about that. In fact Link and Zelda's actions were not mentioned in the cut scene for the botched execution of Ganondorf. It states that he was evil and ruthless and blinded by his "fury and might". And because of that he was brought to justice. One last point here, the sages state that "by some divine prank" Ganondorf had been gifted "the chose power of the gods". Meaning he was still fated to be powerful. This was beyond the control of any mortal and could very well have been caused by the curse of Demise. Remember that he was a demon. This means he had power, maybe not that of a god by any means, but still supernatural and still beyond that of any mortal. Also a theory that might explain that further is one I heard that the goddesses might not be good or evil, just neutral and because of that they don't really care who wins, as long as there is balance (of course theories are not proven so yeah). As for Wind Waker Ganondorf, it's clear Ganondorf is "evil", the same nature as Demise, because before the sword is restored to full power, Ganondorf says the sword cannot harm him because it no longer repels evil. If that's the case, it stands to reason that he's still very evil. Now there is a scene where he talks about his people and his regrets. Of course he would have regrets, everyone who is evil does at some point. Even with Ganondorf being an incarnation of Demise. Also interesting to note that Ganondorf does mention "it can only be fate that I would again gather the three with the crests". I mention this only because it mentions fate. Clearly he knows he has a specific fate or that destiny is something out of his own personal control. He also goes on to wish for the gods to give him Hyrule (again the desire for power, not his people, it's all about that desire which came from Demise's original purpose). Also notice this was his wish AFTER he took the power from Link and Zelda and rendering them helpless (or what he thought was helpless, thus getting revenge, though revenge took a back seat to his desire for power). Sorry about the long winded comment, I'm a huge fan of OoT (my favorite game of all time), and I just thought maybe a bit of discussion might be interesting regarding the Demise connection. Skyward Sword is an "okay" game but the lore elements I felt were very solid and I felt it added a lot of depth to the story of OoT which already was great. And with that the extra context of TP and WW really help to give more reference.

I've always assumed Ganondorf became Demise (in a way) when he entered the sacred realm- that fate wasnt locked, fixed, until that point, that he had gone that far that he became Demise even if he wasnt beforehand. Thats how I've always thought of it since Skyward

The whole thing with Demise's curse makes Ganondorf a very tragic character. He grew up in a hostile and life threatening environment, while Hyrule was blessed and protected by the goddess Hylia, and in his efforts to save his people, he became (more or less) possessed by Demise. I don't think he lost his free will (entirely), but I do think Demise still feeds off his anger and influences him ever so slightly....

Your theory about Bongo Bongo being like a representation of the cost of war, and all that you said, and how when it escapes from the well and goes to the Shadow Temple you think it was returning to its kin basically, made some sense in my mind because of something I thought of in turn. When Bongo Bongo escapes the well it's an entirely ethereal entity. As an ethereal entity it has no form, and while it can interact with the corporeal plane, objects from the corporeal plane cannot interact with it. Perhaps it had to return to its corporeal form after escaping the seal in order to remain in the corporeal plane. As an aside, it's interesting to note that when Bongo Bongo is defeated, its corporeal form appears to melt exposing its ethereal form, and then that ethereal form burns up in a purple flame. Not sure if this means anything lorewise, but Volvagia, Phantom Ganon and Gohma also burn up in this purple fire (actually I think Volvagia burns up in a more mundane orange flame) when beaten, although Phantom Ganon vanishes from the world before it finishes burning up. I think Morpha's death animation could be said to end in a variation of this, but as an entity made of water it logically wouldn't burn. Instead it hits the ground with a big splash, and the splash mostly dissipates Morpha's form although some drops of water to scatter. Those drops then disappear immediately upon hitting the floor again. It's also significant to note that the other bosses die in biological ways, rather than suddenly bursting into a probably magical flame. It's probably also worth noting in this regard that while Volvagia does suddenly burst into flames when you beat him, the flames do not completely consume him. Rather the flame seems to reverts him to the state he would likely have been in before Ganondorf revived him. Again, not sure if there's any lore significance, but it's all very interesting.

Rauru is one of the original sages. In fact he's the last remaining member of the original sages. His first few lines are 'I am Rauru, one of the ancient sages. Ages ago, we ancient sages built the Temple of Time to protect the Triforce from evil ones. This is the Chamber of Sages, inside the Temple of Light. The Temple of Light, situated in the very center of the Sacred Realm, is the last stronghold against Ganondorf's forces.' Rauru being of the original sages is further backed up by the fact that he's the only sage who is not referred to as awakening as a sage when you get his medallion. The text just says 'Rauru the sage adds his power to yours.'

I'll always maintain that the third timeline exists because each timeline corresponds to one of the Triforces. The TP timeline is for Courage, since it's the timeline that Link remains in. The WW timeline is for Wisdom, since it was created by Zelda. The third timeline is for Power, since Ganondorf and his forces are victorious through the defeat of Link.

My take on Ganondorf & Demise is that Demise "curse" is basically just that--a curse. It affects the personality of whoever's got it, but subtly. IE the cursed are predisposed to be slightly more selfish, cruel and ambitious than they otherwise would be. And also have an affinity for magic/sorcery/mysticism that they otherwise wouldn't be. Whether or not someone suffering Demise' Curse ends up becoming a villain depends on their life, history and circumstances. IE I'm of the belief that Demise' curse (like the spirit of the Hero) is something that is *constantly* being reincarnated... but we only see genuine heroes and villains once every few centuries or so because most of those with Demise' curse live lives where they never have the opportunity to fullfil their ambitions, or because their inhibitions outweigh those ambitions--and countless Heroes are born, live, and die without ever finding need to exercise their heroism. It has the neat side-effect of allowing for some nifty OoT potentialities. Like a pseudo-Ganondorf who's just, like, a grumpy farmer; a persudo-Link who's a fairly dull scholar. Things like that.

Something I was just thinking about recently. Does anyone else feel like the Gerudo part of the map and the Shadow Temple thing feel tacked on compared to the rest of the game? The Gerudo part of the map is the only part of the overworld that Link cannot enter every section of as a Child. That is to say, he cannot go through Gerudo Valley to reach Gerudo Fortress, go through Gerudo Fortress to reach the Haunted Wasteland, and go through the Haunted Wasteland to reach the Desert Colossus as a kid. In fact he can barely enter Gerudo Valley as a kid before he reaches an impassible roadblock. The only other overworld location Link cannot reach as a kid is the one that only exists in the adult timeline: Ganon's Castle. Unlike the Ganon's Castle overworld area though, the loading zones in the Gerudo section of the map function just fine both ways whether Link is in the past or future; they just can't be reached in the past. The Shadow Temple sequence is its own brand of feeling tacked on. You need to have the Forest Medallion, the Fire Medallion, and the Water Medallion to even trigger the event that allows you to _enter_ the Shadow Temple. That, even more than the Gerudo part of the map feels tacked on, because for first timers it comes completely out of nowhere. At least if you explore Hyrule Field you can find Gerudo Valley. The only indication you're given that there's even a dungeon in the Graveyard is from Sheik's first bit of exposition, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if some players forgot about it until they return to Kakariko and trigger the event by chance. Now a couple things that potentially tie into this, that might paint a bit of a picture of what an earlier build of Zelda 64 might have been like. First off, at some point during the game's development the medallions were going to be usable items, and they were going to function the way the Warp Songs do in the final product. Second, and this has always bothered me, even before I started learning about what might have been based on discoveries about early development builds of the game, when you get the Medallions, the sages are said to add their power to yours. They don't. In the final game at least, they give you no additional power. However that might not have always been the case. At some point the Forest Temple was the Wind Temple. The Water Temple was also the Ice Temple, but that's less important to what I'm about to say. Consider the Spells. Din's _Fire_, Farore's _Wind_, and Nayru's...Love? Really breaks the theme there doesn't it? As it exists, yes. As a potential prior existence, possibly not. Consider the following; but remember these are not actual terms from some prior build, but just my own idea of what might have been. 'Saria's _Wind_'. 'Darunia's _Fire_'. 'Ruto's _Love_'. I for one have always considered it pretty obvious that the Zora symbol as seen in the Zora's Sapphire was adapted almost one-to-one for the symbol of Nayru starting in Wind Waker. That doesn't have so much to do with what I'm saying directly, but it could be the bridge of logic that explains why 'Ruto's Love' became 'Nayru's Love' when a possible link to the sages was removed from the spells' acquisition. As an extension of this thought even though it leaves the initial point behind, it's worth noting that there is one temple that is explicitly named, and that has a Medallion thematically paired with it, but is never explored in either story or gameplay capacity.. The Temple of Light. All we know about it is that it's at the very center of the Sacred Realm, and that the Chamber of Sages is deep inside of it. What if, once upon a time, the Chamber of Sages was the Temple of Light Boss Room. The platform you meet the sages on certainly _looks_ like a temple Boss Battle platform from Ocarina of Time. After all, consider the other examples. In the Boss Room of what we know as the Forest Temple, the platform you fight on is a hexagon with a large Triforce engraved in the center, and six smaller Triforce engravings at certain points around the rim that happen to be the safe spots for Phantom Ganon's lightning attack from the first phase of the battle. In the Boss Room of the Fire Temple, the platform is again a hexagon, and there are 7 holes arranged in the pattern of the medallion and Triforce engravings on the platform of the Chamber of Sages. These holes are like Whack-a-Mole holes for the boss. The sides of the platform are also fully climbable; not only to allow you to get back up if you fall off, but also to hide from Volvagia's attacks. Specifically, if you cling to the side of the platform during Volvagia's second attack phase; the meteor shower, you won't get hit. On the other hand, if you run to the edge and climb down onto it during Volvagia's first attack phase; where he's flying around and trying to swipe at and/or breathe fire on you, Volvagia will stop trying to pursue you and will instead cut his attack phase short and head for one of the holes to begin his 'vulnerable' phase. Morpha's boss room has the four central platforms and the spiked wall, Bongo Bongo has an arena almost just like Volvagia's, only the side isn't climbable and instead Link just jumps and grabs the top to pull himself up if he falls down, and the top of the platform has a different gimmick to it.Finally, the the Twinrova Boss Room is essentially the inverse of the Ganondorf Boss Room; big platform in the center of both, four smaller platforms around the central platform although in Twinrova's room the platforms are in the cardinal directions relative to the central platform, while the smaller platforms in Ganondorf's room are diagonally oriented. Also Ganondorf's room is the tall but narrow central column of his tower, while Twinrova's room is very big and open in all three dimensions. Anyway, in summation, I feel like at some point the Gerudo area was just added onto what was already there, as was the Shadow Temple and that whole sequence. Likewise, I feel like at some point the Light Temple was an actual dungeon. As a matter of fact I think it would have been the game's penultimate dungeon because 'light' and because of my idea of the sages giving you magic abilities. I already theorized that at some point Saria and Darunia gave you the Warp spell and the Attack spell, respectively. Along that same line I think Darunia gave you the Fire Arrow, and Ruto gave you the Ice Arrow. Thus following this line of thought, I think at this theoretical earlier developmental stage Rauru would have given you the Light Arrow after you defeated the boss of the Temple of Light.

First rumination with hair! :o(I totally haven't known for weeks!) and yay Zelda~ Hope to see some more on the stream. Ocarina of time, probably the one I always confuse with Majora's mask, because I'm the smartest man in the world. I remember playing this at a daycare center(like for the first time ever) after being dropped off by my mother, and finding that I love to explore. While not this game in particular that I ever played of this style, it was the one I just farted about in. I wound up actually just liking walking around in the world, and I never got farther than the second temple. Lots of fun to young little me.

I know that I'm coming to this conversation very late (I just found you) but here's my theory on the third timeline. The third timeline is created when we go back in time to get the Lens of Truth. Adult 1 you do not have it, but you do when you return. This would make it so it's an entirely new timeline. The timeline without Lens of Truth is the fallen (what the people of this timeline assume happened to the heroo because he disappeared and never came back) and the second one with the Lens of Truth is what becomes the Adult timeline. That's the best I have come up with that doesn't immediately cause the infinite diverting paths.

Thoughts from this video: The Kokiri believed that if they left the forest, they'd cease to exist. What if that's true - from a certain point of view - because they would cease to be Kokiri and revert to Koroks? The spiritual stones have obvious parallels with the three pendants from Link to the Past, the three pearls from Wind Waker, and the three gems from the stone map in Skyward Sword that unlocks the surface world for you. The obvious speculation is that they're all the same set of three stones. While Twinrova do zap Nabooru, they do say immediately beforehand that they intend to save her for later to brainwash her again. I always assumed it was a teleport-zap rather than anything more lethal. Also, if the Sages all die, that raises some awkward questions about the seven maidens in LttP who are supposedly their descendants (though there are already some awkward questions raised by the apparently human/hylian maidens being descended from at least 5 different species) Time travel isn't unique to Ocarina - if you count the Oracle games, then it's a major element of Ages, and Skyward Sword blithely messes with time using its Timeshift Stones and the time portals. And, of course, Majora's Mask does the whole Groundhog Day thing (and raises the question of which events are historical once you get to the New Day since you have a whole bunch of events from different loops implied to have all happened...). Pretty much any of those games could have spawned a third timeline without causing things to go quasi-infinite...

Hey man, just wanted to throw in my two cents about the timeline thing. I feel like Nintendo just wanted to create a "what if" scenario to help have timelines that represent each piece of the Triforce. You have a "what if" Link died in Ocarina of Time, and a "what if" Link succeeded in Ocarina of Time. That therein lies the three timelines in which Link dies (representative of Power prevailing), Link wins and a downtrodden Hyrule continues and eventually drowns to both prevent its destruction and allow history to move on (representative of Courage prevailing), and the timeline where Link is sent back via more powerful means in order to change the course of his own history (representative of Wisdom prevailing). They could do this with ANY given game and plotpoint, sure, but I feel llike it's the importance of time travel in Ocarina of Time, as well as the birth of the Demon King Ganon, that Nintendo decided to split a "death" scenario right there. I'm with you in that there is no possible way all three timelines can exist at the same time. In regards to those more powerful means, Link's time travel throughout OoT's journey is signified by a power that is not Zelda's. Whether it be the sword, the realm, or Rauru, as you stated, it's a different power source than from the descendant of Hylia herself. So while the power of time travel throughout the journey is confined to that current dimension, with things you do as a child taking place in that 7 year future - it's the power of the Goddess ("7th sage" or whatever), fueled by her six sages that was able to send you back to actually live your life by your own terms while she and the rest of Hyrule dealt with the reality of things in that dimension. Whether or not she knew things would be split and dual dimensions would arise from the haphazard decision is besides the point, and pretty dang irresponsible of her to do that. Though I guess you could say 7 years of guilt for planning to use Link as a tool got the better of her.Anyway, those are my theories on the matter. Let me know what you think!EDIT: More thought to the cause of the "what if" scenario - on the official timeline, the cut where Link dies is inbetween the beginning and end of Ocarina of Time, implying that Link was slain anytime between then. It's a literal impossibility for Link to be slain and still come out triumphant over Ganon in the end, unless we're going to get into semantics and talk about time loops where Link always dies, and then this one time Courage pulled through and broke the loop and created the other two timelines. EDIT2: Formatting does not sit well with youtube comments for some reason.. hope you read this!
@maxh_music8 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. What would you rather have, a timeline that technically clashes with rules of time travel in fiction or a handful of zelda games that are just in their own little bubble that don't fit into the lore of the other two timelines? This is a good observation.

If you look at Demise's curse in that only "his hatred" will live on, it doesn't cheapen Ganondorf's character. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Demise himself lives on, only that he cursed the land to be in a cycle of warfare, chaos, and bloodshed, but how that gets carried out isn't destiny. The king is just as responsible for bringing back Demise's hatred as Ganondorf. But if they didn't go to war than chaos would still happen, just in another way, because of other people. It was still by their choices and actions that the curse was fulfilled. I hope that makes sense.

If it helps at all Arch, the third timeline is set up if Link dies in the final fight with Ganon in OoT, that's the point you were asking about. The Gerudo actually had nothing to do with it.

I know this is 5 years ago and I'm only 33 minutes in, but as someone who once ran a fairly large Zelda theory group, looking into the lore and extrapolating, I'd say the Demise reincarnation thing doesn't have to be taken literally. If I may liken it to Star Wars, whether or not this particular facet of the character is canon anymore, when Darth Bane establishes the Rule of Two, it is heavily implied that he passed his consciousness onto his apprentice, Darth Zannah, the idea being that he lives on through her, not taken over her mind, but living alongside it. I liken that further to Avatar: The Last Airbender and the avatar state/reincarnation. Meaning Darth Sidious, whether aware of it or not, carries within him at least that same consciousness, if not the consciosness of all the sith masters before him. However, at least in my opinion, this doesn't necessarily deminish Sidiouses accomplishments of exterminating the Jedi and overthrowing the Republic. Similarly, Demise's curse doesn't have to take away from the drive or the physical and mental achievements of Ganondorf. While there may be some amount of 'fate' involved with the idea that Demise's hatred will live on and resurface from time to time throughout Hyrule's history, it doesn't have to bind Ganondorf specifically to the role of being 'the next Demise'. And yes, I'm aware that Demise's design is clearly meant to look like an earlier 'prototype', for lack of a better term, of Ganondorf, I feel that his curse is also personified in other series villains, perhaps even times of war or acts of violence in general are influenced by that everlasting hatred of the demon king.
@kingloucifur80863 жыл бұрын
I have no idea whether you'll read this or what your thoughts are on the timeline now, but I'm currently at 1:18:00 and I'd just like to address that I've long held the belief that the third timeline where Link dies has a specific jumping off point, the same point as the other two, thus hopefully serving to fix or make better the problem you have with the mechanics of it. In the third timeline, Ganon (not Ganondorf) kills Link and takes the triforce of courage. It then takes Zelda (who is present during the fight with both the 'light force' and the triforce of wisdom) and the sages to seal Ganon in the sacred realm, from which he distrorts it over time and is finally able to make it bleed through into Hyrule as the 'Dark World' of LTTP. This essentially makes the third timeline an alternative to the Adult timeline. In other words, the child timeline is one in which the takeover of Ganondorf never happens, the other two are the two timelines which determine the fate of Hyrule after Ganondorf takes over in the 'future'. This works because the child timeline has a seperate consequence to the other two timelines, while both adult timelines see Ganon escaping the sacred realm, just in one the sages, being prepared for such an event after successfully sealing Ganon away with Link's help, are able to respond to this by drowning Hyrule, and in the Link is dead timeline, the sages are no longer around and so when the dark world leaks into Hyrule, there's nothing to stop it. On a final note, just to explain my understanding of the time travel mechanics in the Zelda series, I wanted to comment on my use of 'future' within quotations. I actually believe that the Adult timeline becomes the 'present' as soon as Link pulls the master sword from its pedastal. There is no time travel here, just a leap from childhood to adulthood while Link is kept in stasis by Rauru. It is a longheld theory that the pedestal is made from or contains the same crystal substance that the time stones in Skyward Sword are made from and it has been confirmed that the Ocarina of Time itself is made from the same substance, and we can safely say the time gate things in Skyward Sword, with the first we see used in the game being close to the mining facility where those stones are mined. I mention all this to tie it together and say definitively that any actual time travel we see in the series is travel to the past only. When Zelda goes back in time in Skyward Sword to sleep for hundreds of years, when we hit a time stone, when the master sword is placed in the pedastal as an adult, when the ocarina is used by Zelda to send Link back to his time, when Link uses the ocarina himself in Majora's mask to reset the three days. It's always a step back. Just wanted to mention that to clear up trouble you might have had with regards to seeing the adult timeline as the future, rather than it being the present. The consequences of the present are the focus of the two longer timelines. The Child timeline is the only really seperare entity and its consequences are self contained to Ganondorf being arrested after Link's warning from what they percieve as the future. Also, as you mentioned in this video or in the Majora's Mask rumination, Link's consciousness and experiences stay with him. That's also true for Zelda stepping into the past in Skyward Sword then waking up in tje present of that game and recognising when she last saw Link, which for Link himself was not too long ago but for her was an age. Same case for the old Impa who guides you through the game, the same one that stepped into the past with Zelda and waited out that time to meet you again.

Great video and awesome points. But link is not a stalfos in twilight princess. You look at him closely you see no skeletal remains. He is just a spirit just like near the end of the game in hyrule castle graveyard you see hylian soldiers. He never turns into one. He was raised as a Kokiri and was protected by the Deku Tree because he knew he was a child of destiny who would impact the fate of Hyrule. I hold the theory that deku tree protects and guards the forest. But your theory is okay it's just Link doesn't become a stalfos and it is only those who get lost in the lost woods become one. Link was raised as I said a Kokiri plus Twilight Princess Link is the descendant of Ocarina Link.

1:17:48 I know 5 years too late, you won't see this and won't care but... Any time a player ever died at any point in gameplay between the start of the Deadman's Volley and the defeat of GANON, you let the downfall timeline happen. I can't be the only person who saw the timeline split and saw that it fixed *everything*. That Ganondorf has the Unified Triforce, the literal Plot Device. The item that breaks all of the rules. Funny enough, Ganondorf uses it to create what becomes the prime timeline. No, really. Even without the frankly stupid "link's cap has a band in the downfall timeline and the only green cap you can get without Amiibos has a band" evidence some casual theorists cling to, its the only one that works. > Twilight Princess is an atrophied and dying Hyrule. I could see Aonuma and his team finding a way to salvage it, but thematically it fits better as a dying timeline. > Wind Waker leads to a completely different land that forgets it's heritage. > Zelda II is a world recovering from the fall, a world where it's easy to imagine the Sheikah coming back out of hiding and leading to a technomagic utopia for an age. It is also the only timeline where Ganon comes back from the dead. Two high-level Animate Dead spells (Oracle, LBW), and one True Resurrection spell (whatever happened pre Z1). Footnotes: 1. I work from the assumption that Demise's curse isn't a "I get reincarnated in the western image of reincarnation" curse, but instead a "my malice will find hosts throughout the ages to cause hell for you." It's what turned Vaati's curiosity sinister, what possessed Bellum, what allowed Yuga to come over from Lorule, etc. In the case I believe Malladus was just one of Demise's servants from when he first invaded Hyrule. But it was Demise's malice that twisted Coal. It may even be what gave Carrock (or whoever) the power to summon Thunderbird. 2a. Ganon's reincarnations are not a "I get reincarnated in the western image of reincarnation" curse. In fact we never see him reincarnate like that ever. We see resurrections. 2b. The Ganondorf from 4SA is not a reincarnation. He's just another Gerudo male groomed (presumably by Kotake and Koume) to be a replacement for Ganondorf.

Just had an idea listening to this and no idea if theres much to disprove it: Is Rauru the King of Hyrule? We know from other games that the King can change form (thus the owl), and it seems like a safe bet the King was likely killed by Gannondorf, so it seems possible.

In my mind the Civil war before oot was a war about the unity of the land under the banner of the hyrule king. Only the gerudos and Part of the sheikah fought against it. The rebellious sheikah under the lead of Bongo Bongo couldn't accept to serve a King instead of the godess. Because of the alliance ganondorf learned about the forgotten triforce. After the sheikah were defeited and exicuted in the shadowtemple. Bongo as their leader was punished cruely and the gerudos were alone in the war. That's the reasons, why ganondorf bows to the King. First he couldn't win against the United force of hylians, zora and gorons. But more important, He needed to came close to the royal family to find out more about the Power of the godesses.

Extremly late to the party, but hey... here we go. There is one way the downfall timeline could make sense within the timetravel rules... Oot's timetravel seems to work a bit like the one in the MCU in the way that if you go back in time you don't really change your but you create a branch. That is what happened at the end of the game creating child and adult timeline. Well, lorewise you can't finish the game without going back in time at least one more time. You have no choice but to become a kid again to even properly start the spirit temple. So by the rules, link left at a point of time when he didn't beat the last temple but went back in time and created yet another branch where he started the temple as a kid, maybe even git the song of storms and the lense of truth... and then pulled the sword again to sleep seven years again... remember, it was never stated that the sword sent him forward in time, just that he was trapt for seven years. He never actually came back to the branch where he had to leave the spirit temple to get the gauntlets. And all the others like sheik knew about that was that he went to the desert and never came back, maybe therefor concluding that Ganondorf killed him there.

Ganondorf was never a self-made man in OoT, neither before or after Skyward Sword.

I have to hope that you are not playing the 3DS version of Majora's Mask. Some of the changes in that remake change the impact and importance of the three day system. +Thanatos388 Its mainly that, though also partially skipping ahead to exact points as opposed to the six hour skip restriction of the original. They both add to the unique experience of the game. For a normal replay they are very nice features, for a first time play through or rumination replay they can negatively affect the experience. Then theres the Zora, Deku and ice arrow changes, which were bad and totally unnecessary.
@Tamacat3889 жыл бұрын
Jesse Privett I can see your point with the Zora, Deku, and arrow changes but being able to move to any point in time was very useful. Its not like standing around waiting for the side quest to continue at the correct time was a difficult "skill" that got neutered by the new feature you know?

+Thanatos388 Its not about it being challenging, it has to do with the theme of time and its effects on people which is a fairly big part of the unique experience this game brings. I think its a great feature for a normal replay, just not an original playthrough or rumination replay.

So I've been having this thought in my head for a while, especially after re-watching this video. Even though Skyward Sword retconned the story of all the Zelda games in maybe not the best way possible (in a pretty bad way actually, although I liked the story overall - kind of works for me as the whole origin thing) - is it too much of a stretch to think that the whole Demise influence is less fate, but more like the potential for malice, just like there's always a Zelda and a hero? The assumption following Skyward is that Demise's curse makes it so that there's always some big bad as a result of Demise's influence. In my head canon it's not that Ganondorf is destined to be the big bad, because given the right set of circumstances probably anyone could be - he just has the drive to actually get there, so that in a way still makes his achievements his own, rather than fate, destiny or whatnot. Just a thought that maybe helps to get over the whole fate thing. On the other hand, would that mean that if Demise hand't cast that curse of his, there wouldn't be any evil in that setting? Nintendo, why you do this to me?
@greenleadercyrus57178 жыл бұрын
teddyharvester That's how I think of it. Demise, The Hero, and Hylia all are archetypes and Demise's curse forces them together on an endless loop. While reincarnation, aka fate, can explain these things, I personally think that literature ignores the idea that archetypes can be a 5th dimensional construct that human's tap into based upon what they currently do. Kind of like when a person is Prideful they are tapping into the spirit of Atlas. I call them Abstract Personifications. I always enjoyed that Ganondorf was his own man who tapped into the spirit of Demise and therefor became that archetype during this point in history. I could be wrong but I think that Zelda is the only one specifically stated to bear the soul of Hylia in every incarnation. The others just tap into the Hero archetype.

@@CC42_ Sorry I took so long to respond, just saw the comment. I love it! I've played 100+ hours of it so far and am about halfway through it. It doesn't make my top 3 favorite Zeldas. That still remains Twilight Princess, Ocarina Of Time, and Skyward Sword. But It is certainly in my top 5! Love the world building and overall feeling of loneliness the game has. I'm disappointed in the fact that it is basically a soft reboot of the Zelda series. How it doesn't connect very well to the other games in the series. But it isn't a deal breaker or anything. Overall amazing game!

This is subjective but I sorta liked the 2D maps in certain parts of the game, like the alleyways in Castle Town or (I believe, could be wrong) the exterior of the Temple of Time. It was charming. That said, the remaster did a great job. Plus the Great Fairy's tits aren't pointed monstrosities anymore lol.
