I appreciate all of your videos Rocket and the obvious hard work and passion you put into them. I just wish you had more subs than you do. At 7.7k you're doing good don't get me wrong and I know you appreciate your audience as it is. I just think you deserve more and when I see some of the 'dumb-ass" people on KZbin with 100k and more for doing virtually nothing.....well it kind of boggles my mind. But I digress, thanks for all you do. I for one am grateful for all you do. Hope to see you in MWO sometime. Look for "Damian Blackheart".

Hello CR. Attached is my version of the 'more obscure' Clan words and their meanings. I hope this is helpful. Clan Terminology Etymology: It must be stated at the outset that most Clan words are either borrowed from other languages, diminutives of existing words, or mashed up words as is common in English. Words like 'Highway', 'Laser', 'Radar', etc. Clan examples: QuiAff: Quiry (ask) Affirmative. QuiNeg: Quiry (ask) Negative. In effect, a short way of saying: 'do you agree', and 'do you disagree'? I must also state here that all 'translations' offered are my own interpretations of words and their meanings, aided by various translation software found on the Internet, and various dictionaries. Agree or not, your choice. Abjuration: The formal renouncement of a formal agreement. Abtaka: Able Body Taken. A valued captured person. Aimag: Inner Mongolian, usually translated as "league", from Chinese: pinyin: méng) which are a prefecture-level subdivision. These are the smaller of the Clan Sea Fox formations. The Aimag is commanded by an ovKhan, who oversees all enclaves, business interaction with worlds, setting up colonies, fleet operations and the maintenance thereof. Blitzking: Since the Clans value one-on-one battle, large 'swarm' attacks for which the German term Blitzkrieg (Lightning War) is derived from is highly frowned upon, and has come to be a Clan epithet, or 'curse word'. Chalcas: Challenge of the Caste. Something or someone that challenges accepted Caste rules and rituals. Curagan: Kuragan (Mongolian Language) in Mongolian, a Kuragan is a 'son in law'. It may also be Courageous Agent. As used by the Clans, it is the term for the aide of a Star Colonel or a Garrison Commander. Someone that the Leader would want to have close to hand. Eckahn: Even though the direct translation (Hindi Language) means: Deckhand, the Clan Cloud Cobra uses it for the title of one of their leadership roles. This may be due to the 'khan' in the name and a misunderstanding of what the word actually meant. Giftake: Literally: Gift-Taken. This is the 'gift' of genetic material to another Clan, or the contribution of a Warrior's genetic profile into their Clan's 'Trueborn' canister birth system to perpetuate one's genetic line. the 'gift' taken from the Warrior to perpetuate his genetic line. Hegira: A journey taken to escape from danger; an exodus. Etymology: From Medieval Latin Hejira, from Arabic (híjra, 'departure', 'exodus'), referring to Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina in 622 ; from the verb (hájara, 'to emigrate', 'to abandon'). Isorla: Literally 'the Asked For'... The spoils of battle, including bondsmen, ... used by the Jàrnfòlk (Iron People) to describe their JumpShips; translates literally as "iron ships". Keshik: Literally 'Long Haired', once used to describe veteran warriors of Mongolian tribes who were allowed to grow their hair long as a sign of their prowess in battle. Keichi, a derivative of Keshek means 'Guard'. The Keshik is the personal unit of a Clan's Khan, a combination of bodyguard and command staff. Ovkahn: Ov literally 'under'... Thus Under Khan, or perhaps 'Sub-Leader'. In Clan Sea Fox, an OvKhan commands an Aimag, which is a smaller Clan Sea Fox Formation. The OvKhan oversees all enclaves, business interactions, and fleet operations and the maintenance thereof. Powless: Literally, Powerless. Denoting vulnerability. Ristar: Literally 'Rising Star' This term refers to a particularly gifted warrior on his or her way to high position. Rede: In Old English Rede means: Council or Advice. More modern English its meaning is: Account or Story. Satara: Bosnian term; 'Polako satara curo'. Hold Fast, Delay. A Clan council may cast a veto, or Satarra, to settle or postpone disputes between castes within their jurisdiction. Satarra is invoked only when negotiations seem at an impasse and/or threaten to disrupt the work order of the Clan. Savashri: No direct translation found. Assumed to be a Hindi word for Actor. And used by the Clans as an epithet for someone 'acting' a role, or otherwise 'in over their head', or otherwise incompetent. Seyla: Hebrew word Selah. It is a way of saying 'so shall it be', with the same meaning as 'Amen' in English. The Clans use it in only during the most sacred rites, and with respectful manners. Sibko: Sibling Company. A company comprised of all children from the same 'parent, or parents'. In the case of the Clans, a Sibko is children all from the same genetic line, raised and trained together. Literally genetic brothers and sisters to one another. Solahma: A band of misfits, or trouble makers. In the Clans, Solahma is a term for over aged Warriors (age 30+) of any type. Relegated to second line units and Garrison Duties. Stravag: This is an abbreviation of two Russian words, "stran" and "vagon", meaning "independent birth", evoking the also-used in-universe epithet "freebirth", used against those who were conceived normally by two parents as opposed to being genetically engineered. It has connotations of being inferior. Surkai: Possibly derived from Sorakkai; 'Bottle Gourd'. Term dates back to Hindi wars where an embarrassed leader would offer water from his own container (a gourd bottle) to the fallen as a gesture of respect and Apology, a supplication for forgiveness. This has come to mean 'grace under pressure', and 'honorable recompense'. Surkai is the Right of Forgiveness. The Clans honor uniformity in thought and belief above all else in their society. When warriors disagree, when a Clan disagrees with the Grand Council, or when a member of one caste offends a member of another caste, surkai is expected. Toman: Literally 'To Man', a term for manning a formation of soldiers for use in battle by a commander. In the Clans, Toman has come to mean 'that which is in our possession'. Or, the force with which the Clan can draw for combat. Trothkin: 'True Brother/Sister/Kindred'. A term for 'true born', usually used in a respectful manner speaking about other Trueborns. Zellbrigen: Cell, or Basic, plus Bring, or Bringing. A basic set of battlefield rules within which a conflict must be fought. The Clans define this as the body of rules defining dueling behavior and honor in combat. Respectfully brought to you by a Free Birth Mercentary in all Honor and with due Respect for one's Foe. Seyla. Spoken, Frank-ly

One of the things that's always annoyed me about the Clans is their insistence that contractions are improper language, but then they turn around and shorten or condense words (Aff/Neg/Quiaff/Quineg).
@ksciaa0103
@ksciaa0103 5 жыл бұрын
I love the Clans but that is a very good observation. The shortenings and portmanteaus they use are definitely in the contraction family.
@derekburge5294
@derekburge5294 5 жыл бұрын
It's less about avoiding shortening words and more about enunciation, as I understood it. Communication during combat is vital and clarity of speech can go a long way to help that.

@@CriticalRocket Honestly, I put these on at work and minimize them. I'm not sure how many people do the same, but I somehow doubt it matters as much as you think, what you use for visual imagery to backdrop what amount to audio-book or podcast style "videos". :)

@Critical Rocket c182SkylaneRG Said it best Rocket. I put on your videos and spend most of my time listening to you, not watching (unless it's a new chassis, etc.). For me, it's all about your delivery and how you tell things. I put on your videos, minimize them down and listen whilst working, cleaning or even playing certain games like "Battletech", etc. Now don't get me wrong here, I do appreciate the effort you put into the actual videos, and don't want you thinking I don't ever watch. I think it's your tone and accent (I'm American and have a deep southern accent). You could do "Audio Books" and I'd buy them. To me, you'd make a great DM for Dungeons & Dragons or just general storyteller (I've been DM'n since 1979 trust me here you'd be great at it). So don't feel you've got to get videos perfect before releasing them Rocket. As long as you are narrating and delivering the facts in the way you do that's certainly good enough for me and most I'd assume.

I appreciate the comment Cynnister I really do. I would love to do some voice stuff for a battletech game or book one day, hell I would do it for free if they asked. But hey these are fun and as you say they are simple and can be just played in the background for people. Glad you like them :) Also tonight (for me anyway) a new story time will be live, so I hope you like that as well.

one thing you missed ... which is a MAJOR oversight of yours ... is that most clan terms are contractions of longer meanings ... like batchall ... was originally batch trial ... same with quaff and aff ... question in the affirmative and affirmative ... MOST clan saying are created this way and the short forms were found to make combat speach easier and faster leaving more time to actually do battle
@CriticalRocket
@CriticalRocket 5 жыл бұрын
Well all of the stuff for this is verbatim from the book, so all I can say is blame the book? I purposefully don't write off hand personal stuff to avoid this kind of error. Always funny though when these kinds of comments appear and it is the very text of the book causing the issue. This isn't shocking though considering the retcons, changes and other little changes between writers over the decades.

Turns out Nicholas Kerensky played a lot of Scrabble with his dad, Alexander, who allowed contractions in play... Sadly this is pretty believable as an excuse, though not cannon.
