I'd discourage it - it may look harmless, but we had a budgie who would play with the cat. It even spoke the cats' name when it played with it. In fact, the bird was quite naughty and would often annoy the cat and would even hump its tail! The cat would growl at it and eventually belt it with a paw, but claws always retracted. It would also jump up and down on the cats back to wake it up, which you could tell was really annoying the cat. But, all was fine until one day, I couldn't find the bird. The cat had eaten it. Quite why, I'll never know, but it was a very sad day indeed. I was only 11 years old at the time, but the memory has staid with me.

I am completely awestruck. We are probably not giving animals enough credit for the complexity, variability of their behaviour and thinking, the clear presense of a mind beyond instincts and conditioning (that means you, Skinner). The bird is in the company of a predator, a notorious bird-eater, and the cat is engaged in play-predation. It nevertheless understands that they are "friends", that there is trust in the restraint of the cat. The cat is even more surprising. This is play-predation with an animal that is - under any other circumstances - prey. You can see the moments - repeatedly - where the cat reigns in with considerable will-power the progression towards an actual kill. All the sensory feedback pushes the cat towards that point, but it holds back, instincts superseded by a conscious mind that says "friend, not prey". How amazing is that? Having said that, I am not entirely convinced that this could not get out of hands. I was holding my breath repeatedly watching this.

You can tell that the cat is playing gently as it would with another cat. Claws are retracted, body language is calm and playful, not aggressive. I'm 100% sure that this cat is not intending to hurt or eat the bird. That being said, birds are so fragile that one wrong move (even accidental) could prove fatal. I definitely wouldn't let a parrot play with a cat like this.

I had a lorikeet and a cat. The lorikeet ruled the roost. Most playful bird I've ever had. If that bird really felt threatened, it would break out that beak and the cat would backoff immediately. They can draw blood with the beak with no trouble. I know, because I experienced such a bite. My cat always gave it a wide berth. I do recommend that the owners keep a very close eye on the playing and be ready to stop it if needed.

I had an Amazon parrot and an alley cat that were [both pets] and super bff's. The cat would crawl into the bird cage and take naps - which would result in brushing a lot of bird poop out of her fur. They loved to groom each other and got in so much naughty trouble climbing on the curtains and furniture together. Of course, Amazons are bigger than lorikeets, and Daisy was a very small cat so they were more the same size than this pair. The parrot eventually passed away, but naught to do with the cat. I was always amazed by their friendship. It was very genuine.

The birds lungs are flat and against the inside of the back ribs. Their skin is super thin. A cats little sharp tooth could easily puncture her lung and kill your lorikeet. Even if both are just playing, they are playing with death. I hope your bird is still alive and doing well.

Even birds (and many small animals) with minor scratches or bites that should have been survivable died from the resulting infection from dirty claws (think litter box) and saliva. This isn't funny and shouldn't continue. That poor bird can't even fly away because of clipped wings.

Your bird needs not have his feathers trimmed so short,if they were longer he would use them fighting back ,plus you only need do one if your bird trys to fly out windows ,doors etc it needs time to learn to fly in an enclosed space( take itself high into a corner,on a shelf etc ) because that cat is going to have him for dinner ........We have a lorikeet just as yours ,a dog that wants to eat ,thats what the cat is behind your back .........nice to see play though
