Hey guys, these are just my ways & opinions on how I hold my crabs, I only take my crabs out a few times a year to clean the tank and for health checks! Hope this video helped you learn how to hold your hermit crabs without being pinched! Hermit Crab handling can be a tricky thing, and should always be one very RARELY and carefully. Hermit crabs tend to stress easily and can kill them. Remember if you choose to hold your crabs flat of your hand be very careful that they are comfortable and not stressed or they will pinch and you may drop them, or stress them further :)
ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS RESOURCE:www.hermitcrabassociation.com/...
🦀QUESTIONS & CONCERNS🦀
1.) CALCIUM SAND: I usually and have always used this, but am not currently. Some say it is bad, some say it is not. Better to be safe than sorry.
2.) all of the foliage(sticks, plants, ropes, houses) are all hermit crab safe.
4.) all of my shells are boiled
5.) my salt water is bottles and not from the chemical powder that is offered. I feel bottled is safer so the measurements are accurate.
6.) my substrate level is FINE (now 5-6in). I appreciate all comments and advice! But my crabs can hide and molt perfectly. They have recently molted and moved shells since his was filmed and so check my current hermit crab tank video to see the new levels! It grows as my hermits do! :)
7.) FOOD and WATER: their food is very diverse. And the meal has never harmed them, and the bottled pellets have never harmed them. They are all about 8 years old. (They are even featured on my old channel when I first got them) I swap up what they get and change it every other day. Some believe in doing it daily but I choose not too. I've never had any problems so I will not be changing my routine with them :) their water is dechlorinated,you could also use distilled, I DONT RECOMMEND chemically distilled or dechlorinated with the powders from store. I do not believe those are healthy for fish or crabs. BUT you can use them!

Hey guys! Hope you enjoy! Remember it's important to not hold your hermit crabs unless absolutely needed. I hold my crabs a few times a YEAR, just to clean the tank or give them a health check and that's it. This is the longest I've ever held my crabs, in this filming of the video haha. It's so important to leave them alone to not cause stress! Hey Guys! Here are some helpful FAQS 1. I use dechlorinated water for my crabs by letting it sit out, but you can use drops. 2. I use Eco earth substrate which is SAFE but you can also use a eco & sand mix. 5+ inches 3. My hood light provides perfect heat for my crabs(incandescent bulb) but I'm in the south, for extra heat you can put a UTH on the BACK side of the tank if needed. Hermit crabs do not require UVB. 4. 5 gallons per crab approx. 5. They need 3-5 extra shells per crab to switch into available at all times 6. Saltwater must be provided to help with molting, you can use bottled or a instant ocean mix you would use for fish. 7. Keep the tank warm, purple pinchers are okay with 75+ but most other species do well in the 78-80 range. 8. Humidity is always needed so the crabs can breathe, 75%+ and higher is fine! 9. If your crab is burried and hasn't surfaced in a few days THATS OKAY. This is very common, even if they are not molting. 10. Always provide your crab a great variety of food, pellets will not kill them! But their are better things you can provide them like veggies & fruits! 11. I clean my tank about 3 times a year :) or when needed. Hope this answers SOME questions you guys have had, but obvi there is much more I didn't cover here, feel free to watch the rest of my videos! Xo :)

You're correct, I am going to continue to buy them because I'm not walking past a hurt crab that I can rescue and give a new home. Why is it every crab channel can't see that there's reasons TO buy them if you know what you're doing? For a more dire example: I wouldn't leave a dying kitten who needed a bit of attention being neglected behind a window, because a rescue foundation had gotten it from a kitten mill they weren't able to locate the source of, why would I leave a crab in that same condition? Sometimes. Just sometimes, it's not about leaving an irresponsible 2 year old with them. It's educating the stores that are selling them. I'd rather fight to stop the store selling them and see the others got a good home. Stopping the buying of them isn't the way to fight it, it's getting to the source at stores.

Littlelotti's Hartland Hey, I live in Canada, and going into winter, I can't seem to keep my tank warmer than ~71 degrees. I have a heating pad that is supposed to keep the tank warm, but it doesn't seem to raise it above room temperature very much. If you have any tips for keeping my tank warm, they would be much appreciated.

My little Eugene actually loves to be held, just yesterday he was sitting at the front of the tank waiting for me to bring him out. When I did he was really excited and was running around like a kitten. He's also my youngest so that might explain why he has more energy than my other two, Shellby and Nemo.

I have two hermit crabs and they are not shy at all they like to crawl up to me and they are not afraid if I get close to them but I still am against letting them crawl on my hand because they still pinch anything that gets too close to their big claw so this was a very helpful video for me Incase I have to put them on my hand.

I was never pinched by my hermit crabs, but my friend got pinched by hers a couple times and it looked super painful! Some of my crabs were crazy and would come sooooo far out of their shells when I picked them up and wouldn't go back in no matter what. My mom still has two of my old crabs, and they're huge now, so I'm sure a pinch by one of them would be awful! 🦀

Pickles12807 ... Yea they will pinch hard if they feel like it. They are unpredictable lol. I've never been pinched by mine but it's Bc I don't believe in holding them ever, and I never allow them to crawl on my hand. They don't let go when they pinch usually till they feel like it too. Lol thanks for watching Terra 💗🦀

The main reason hermit crabs pinch is to gain footing, not to intentionally harm you. It's like you grabbing your friend beside you as you are about to fall. Thus, having them flat on your hand is very safe as it allows them to walk around on it. They will only pinch if they lose balance, which won't be a problem if your hand is flat. I know this because my hermit crab loves treadmill running on my hands quite a lot and I have only been pinched when I initially first owned him.

I stupidly bought my son 2 hermit crabs two days ago. I had no idea how poorly they were treated and sold or else i wouldn't have supported the industry. The carnie told me the small little box I got them in was just fine and they eat hot dogs and just use tap water as long as it was well water and all is peachy. I knew that was a lie instantly! So ive dropped about 150 on a crabitat tailored from all of your wonderful videos. I truly feel like these littke crabbies are going to have a good life thanks to you. You are awesome!!!

Hi. I love your videos and your love for animals! I have hermit crabs too and I just have to say they don't just pinch you for fun. They'll only do that if you're holding them in the palm of your hand with it not stretched flat out and they fill like they're going to fall. They are curious creatures, shy but curious so when they're extended all the way out they're not coming out to pinch you, they're mainly looking for solid ground to stand on and just wanna explore their surroundings. Just like us we don't want to be held up in the middle of the air with our feet dangling so when you put your finger towards princess she's reaching for a solid place to stand. It just seemed, the way you were talking is that all they want to do is pinch you which isn't the case. They're very docile and only pinch something or someone on like a last resort, usually they just go back in they're shell. I just had to say that. I agree with not picking them up unless necessary. But anywhoo. I love you and you're videos but just had to say that
@LorisHartland
@LorisHartland 7 жыл бұрын
Jessi Weber ... hi! Yes I'm aware they don't pinch for "fun" I didn't state this in the video. I didn't recommend handling on your hand Bc I don't believe they should ever be held long enough to be able to crawl on the hand :) this was an example vid of what can happen/ will happen, while moving the crab from tank to bowl, or moving to clean tank. And how to hold them those few seconds those few times a year. I agree they need to be held on a surface IF they were being held a long time (not what I was showing) but in my opinion they should be viewed as something that can pinch and shouldn't be held. I have a lot of very young viewers and I would rather say " they can pinch, they shouldn't be held" rather than send the message " they usually don't pinch, they are docile and can be held on the Palm and allow to walk around" then have a child do that and get pinched, drop the crab and injure it... but again this is alll why I suggest holding them in a dish...while cleaning to avoid handling...I'm sorry if my message confused you. But it's just my opinion! :) 💗👍🏻🦀 thanks for watching 💗

Jessi Weber ... No you are fine!!! I was in no way trying to say they are mean or anything, but I have to make my videos black and white sometimes Bc so many kids own these crabs and the crabs die so easily from stress. I just wanted to make my message clear as possible, " they can pinch, they shouldn't be held often" not that they will everytime... just that they can. 💗🦀 xo thanks!

Obviously I'm not gonna trust anyone at a pet store to help me, considering the way hermit crabs are caught and treated, and I'm so grateful you've made these videos so that even though this isn't their ideal living condition, we can take care of them the best we can and try to make sure they live happy lives in captivity. :') THANK YOU!!!!

Hermit crabs only pinch if they are threatened or they might fall. So you could easily handle them. though I do agree that you shouldn't handle them often. they probably don't even want to pinch you, but rather just put them down.

I bought hermit crabs from a fair where there were around 60 of them in a foot by foot tank thing, outside, super cold, little dish of water that I could see was coming from some tap off the side of the building. I hoped I did the right thing by housing them with me. I don't plan on touching them much, maybe only in emergencies or moving to bigger housing if they live to their average life expectancy.

I get nervous whenever handling animals :< I’ve dealt with a bunny pouncing at me, a dog chasing me, and now I’ll be having a hermie pinching me, haha. It’s not because I’m “bad” with animals, but it’s because I hesitate so much when it comes to handling. I feel like I’m going to hurt the animal by mistake or make it afraid by accident, and I guess it freaks the animal out lol. Watching this helped me a bit, since I’m planning on adopting two or three hermies soon :) Edit: I’m probably adopting two hermies ^-^ I plan on naming two male crabs Henry and Kermit

I personally take the 2nd approach of letting the crabs crawl about my hand. (I think i do this because i tend to stay on the reptile side of KZbin, and for smaller reptiles that tends to be what type of handling is recommended. And i actually have been pinched pretty bad by holding a crab by it's shell.) I've only ever had one pinching incident whilst letting them walk on my hand, and that is because, (very disturbingly) one of my crabs likes to forage dead skin off of my hand (he/she was not frightened, just using it's small feeding claw to forage, which is honestly the less preferable circumstance conceptually) and the crab started to forage my actual living skin! It wasn't painful, just extremely shocking and confusing.

You shouldn’t be holding them. They’re not animals that need time with their owners. You’ll stress them and cause an early death. Only get them out when they need their substrate cleaned or if you suspect something is wrong.

Awesome video! I have a question. One of my hermit crabs doesn't seem to be moving. It's been like this for a week or two. I've picked him up a bit and I feel no movement in the shell, and he feels pretty lightweight. I've put him in a Tupperware container that I could fit a small paper dish for salt water, a little cup for fresh water, and a dish for food in. I cut a small hole in the top and placed him inside and put it in the tank to keep it warm and humid. Do you think he's dead? I'm hoping he'll turn out okay.

The Ender Realm .... put him back in his tank and leave him. Don't touch him or it will stress him further. If your tank is set up properly everything should be fine. As long as he isn't stressed. Trust me if he was dead you will know, they smell horrible. Also they wouldn't be tucked, they would be limp and fall out if the shell. Good luck 💗

Littlelotti's Hartland Oops! Thank you. I figured it could be, another reason he was in the container in the tank. I'll put him back.

Hi! Do you have any advice or knowledge about when they start molting? I'm new to owning hermit crabs and the molting process seems a bit confusing. If I don't see the hermit crab above the substrate, can i assume he is okay and going through molting? I just want to be sure nothing is wrong with them.

all i know is i rescued 4 of these hermit crabs from some guy who was keeping them in a uncleaned cage on a ritz cracker diet. he also hotboxed his room at all hours of the day. im glad i saved them regardless of how they were caught.

My little Tofu and Sushi LOVED to be held and I was just watching this to make sure I am holding them right bc I am not in the mood to be pinched.

Something to remember is to not drop them if they pinch you, just grab their shell with the other hand and put him back in his terrarium, as soon as they feel comfortable again they'll let go.

Hi Lori, I've had my hermit crabs for months now and have had other crabs in the past. I currently have 4, they're all super tiny and I take great care of them- 4 inches of substrate(they're small), salt water dish, fresh water dish, fresh foods, climbing toys, heat source, etc. They're happy and healthy, but they are so shy. I never get a chance to hold them because there always molting and whenever I DO pick them up, they will never come out. Do you have any advice as to find a way to tame them? Thanks!

I bought two hermit crab from a shop on the side of a street at the beach and am now determined to give them the best life possible, my bigger ones name is Peach and my smaller ones name is Shelly. They were being fed this gross looking pellet stuff and had a sponge that was barely wet. They had painted shells and I was scared they wouldn’t molt and change their shells because I know that sometimes the paint gets stuck to them. I had to wait a bit to purchase a twenty gallon and they were stying in a ten gallon. Although people state they are not pets for small kids, I am young and providing them what I would call good husbandry and trying to give them the best life possible. They have plants, ecoearth, hides, heat, saltwater dish, food, and freshwater dish. Peach has gotten so big that I can hardly find big enough shells for him anymore! I personally don’t think hermit crabs should be taken out of the wild or kept as pets unless they’re captive bread. I was very worried when I bought them because we had a 4 hour long drive back home and I thought that they would overheat, freeze, starve, or something else. The first day I had them, I had to mist them with tap water because I needed to purchase reptisafe and salt for them and I felt bad because l knew what to give them but I couldn’t. They are alive and healthy and I love them so much. Thanks to your informational videos I know how to care for them and give them proper enrichment and care! Thanks for all you do!!
