It's true. Being a dancer I always showed up for Mark Morris performances in Boston, and he often brought us Craig and Lorraine as well. "Dido and Aeneas" in the late 80s with these three was unforgettable, one for the ages.

We have this CD and it is wonderful. She has such a warm sound and exquisite phrasing. What a tragedy, first losing her sister and then dying of the same disease. For fans - there is a great story about her in the New Yorker - I think in 2004 or 5. Did you all know she was a professional viola player before she ever began singing? Thanks for posting!

This is so tearjerkingly beautiful. I looked her up because quite by accident I got the CD of her singing the Neruda Songs composed for her by her husband Peter Lieberson which are the greatest copmpositions written in the genre since Staus's Four Last Songs. This Bach Cantata is just another proof that Bach spoke with the voice of God!

Thanks, Joopschilp for posting this. Lorraine, you are missed. Peter Sellars' controversial staging with Ms. Hunt-Lieberson in a hospital gown was in this case both pertinent (in light of her sister's succumbing to breast cancer) and prophetic. Hunt-Lieberson is also marvelous in Sellars' production of Handel's "Theodora." A definite don't miss.

Lorraine, knowing she was dying, made a final, public statement. She blessed us, and was blessed. Would that God return her to us . . .

...she was wearing a flimsy hospital gown and thick woolen socks, her face contorted with pain and yearning, portrayed a terminally ill patient who, no longer able to endure treatments, wants to let go and be comforted by Jesus. During one consoling aria, Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen ("Slumber now, weary eyes"), she yanked tubes from her arms and sang the spiralling melody with an uncanny blend of ennobling grace and unbearable sadness

Total agreement. Objectively it really falls flat.

@ladivissima You obviously don't know your Mezzo's. Ask any Opera expert.....they'll tell you she was one of, if not the best Mezzo. R.I.P. Lorraine.

I disagree. I'm not against bass in this case, but Lorraine was simply the best. I, guess, JSB would be proud, hering this voice of angel, singing his beautiful music.

I'm sorry , but the quality of the recording as uploaded, is so atrocious as to border on the slanderous to the memory of this wonderful, legendary artist. Please remove it, as its presence really is a terrible disservice to Ms. Hunt Lieberson (and yes, I have noticed your announcement of the reloading). Thanks..

Simeon, who first said the Nunc Dimittis was not a woman! Bach wrote the Cantata for a Bass. A soprano sound confuses itself with the obbligato oboe in the same tessitura. I hate her mezza di voces (and the strange accents of the strings, as if first beats needed accentuating). This vocalo technique does not correspond to anything Bach could have known. Also, objectively I can find no beauty in her rather shrill interpretation. No resignation (text).
