Not only was he on the phone, but he had rolled across the stop line for the red traffic light. HGVs comprise 5% of London traffic, but are involved in 50% of London traffic fatalities. HGVs are the one vehicle I will always do my best to check for phone use.

@@evo4ralliart Yes there was a green light for the cyclist but the traffic light also went to green for the vehicles and he just sat there. Now, there is an argument that he was distracted by Mikey talking to him but even after Mikey engaged him in conversation he went straight back to looking at his phone with vehicles behind blaring the horns because he wasn't moving. About 2-3 years ago, an HGV driver ploughed into stationary traffic on the A1 near me in Co. Durham…multiple fatalities and is one of the worst accidents police had to deal with. The driver had been on a dating app whilst driving and didn’t see that the traffic ahead had some to a stop. Police released dashcam footage of it to raise awareness and even had the driver record his own plea from prison for other drivers to stop using phones. I really hope they remove his license, as these vehicles are so dangerous if not driven properly.

When I was a bus driver, the policy was instant dismissal if you were caught using your phone. When I was driving, my phone was always on silent and in my bag. Well done for the result in getting this driver off the road. A few years back, a young lady lost her life because someone in a 7.5 tonne lorry crashed into her car in a queue on the motorway. The lorry was doing 56mph and the driver was texting on the phone but failed to see the traffic was already stationary. The young lady was on her way to work. The lorry driver was jailed. I can't believe that despite all the known fatalities associated with such an offence, people still use the phone behind the wheel. It should be a mandatory 12 month ban and a minimum of £1000 fine. Well done Mikey for catching this one. It also seemed he just didn't care.

I remember this one... "Moment lorry driver crashes and kills three people after browsing adult dating sites" put that into youtube, he killed 3 people cause he was on his phone. Its complacency that is, he's got away with it 100 times so doesn't think about the consequences. When I drive I wait till I'm sure its safe before I mess with the radio or air conditioning or whatever, its not worth going into the back of a car that's just slowed down whilst you were looking away for a couple of seconds. Better option is to wait till you've stopped at lights before you mess with anything (except phone).

So to clear this lil spat up, 3.5tonne to 7.tonne is C1, aka MGV, Medium Goods Vehicle. To drive for a living you’re required to have the licence, digital tacho card & driver CPC card. You’re restricted to the rules of the RTD & Tacho, even IF, as I did, you passed before Jan 1st 1997 & got it on Grandfather Rights. Further, when taking my Cat C training, my instructor was very clear, those who got C1 on grandfather rights and drove them regular were hard to train due to way too many bad habits, & I was one of those. My driving standard was raised & I kept all those good habits across the board.

For the record, as with most people, I am obviously disgusted by red light jumpers, but I was simply pointing out that - regardless of if somebody has run a red light or not - you are supposed to wait until it is clear before you proceed. Aren't you? It's in the highway code, I'm fairly certain. Green isn't a signal to floor it no matter what. Nor is it telling you to set off and make an event out of nothing. Mikey didn't quite do that in this clip but some would have taken it to another level and tried to drive/cycle into the Kia to make a point when it's totally unnecessary. Do you get my point? So no, I'm not defending red light jumpers. I'm trying to speak from a reasonable point of view.

Stationary phone drivers are still dangerous for many reasons: 1) The people using their phones when stationary are very often the same people using them when moving. They only put the phone down because I caught them. 2) They are entirely unaware of people crossing the road around them. See here where a phone driver almost hits someone in the queue twitter.com/phonekills/status/1491526464520560641?s=20 See this other tweet where a 5 year old child is almost hit by a phone driver who was stationary: x.com/cmdkenyon/status/1724483042046067052?s=20 And another: x.com/WelshBrendan2/status/1796099766557774129 3) They are entirely unaware of filtering cyclists and motorcyclists, despite the Highway Code requiring us to be aware of this. 4) Phone distraction lasts for a good time after you put the phone away. Even if you're only using the phone in each traffic queue at each junction (which is highly unlikely), then you're constantly topping up your mental distraction and are basically as disabled as a drunk driver. 5) Phone driving is worse than drink driving for distraction rates, and that's why it's part of the #Fatal4 behaviours that police target heavily. 6) Here's a police officer telling you that he has been on the scene for 3 fatal RTCs involving drivers who were stationary whilst using their phones, and then moved off and caused a collision: twitter.com/markandcharlie/status/1604073330751197184?s=20&t=uj8sgu7spu4cTyDqqqds2g 7) Policing phone drivers will help them stop other traffic offences too - it's vanishingly rare that someone only breaks a single traffic law like mobile phone use. 8) Parliament recently chose to strengthen the mobile phone law around stationary phone use because it's dangerous and the science supports this. I'm really not interested in this nonsense of "it's not dangerous when stationary, because it clearly is and it's clearly still very appropriate to catch these drivers.

@CyclingMikey
@CyclingMikey 4 ай бұрын
TBH drivers know very well that they aren't allowed to use their phones. I don't think training is the answer, but prosecution is. Here's some of my thinking around why talking to drivers doesn't work: Speaking generally, you might think people will change after just being spoken to, but here's my experience: * Almost no driver will change their law breaking behaviours if I, just an "oik on a bike" ask them to. * A few drivers will change their ways after a police officer gives them words of advice. Most drivers will just go back to doing whatever they did wrong, such as using the phone an hour or a day later. * Most people will change their ways after being prosecuted for lawbreaking like this, and yet still some will continue to re-offend until banned. * A few banned drivers will still continue to offend after regaining their licences. * A very few banned drivers will still drive when banned. The break-point in effectiveness is prosecution - drivers need to be prosecuted to have much chance of altering their behaviour(s) for the better. My views and experience are confirmed by a several of traffic officers who tell me exactly the same.

My Eldest owns a logistics company in the Oxford to Central London corridor and in the past the competition for work was fierce, now people are turning their back on London and he can charge (almost) whatever he likes! I occasionally drive for him as cover. The reason te £7 or £8 pint is so common now is because the Logisitcs costs have blossomed because drivers simply don't want to go and risk fines etc etc. From the Cowley (Oxford) surcharge per delivery to Hillingdon and further in, the lack of people wanting the contracts means far more realistic margins for him and his young family. All his vehicles are 'integrated' and I just speak into a microphone for everything, maps, phone, text... everything! There are no excuses, get these cheap delivery merchants off the roads, take their driver's licence's away.
