At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="324">5:24</a> you can see the Richfield Building with its tower, which had the letters "Richfield" running from top to bottom (seen in reverse in this footage). The 12-story Richfield Oil Company building was spectacular, with a black and gold Art Deco terra-cotta exterior ("black gold"=oil). The 130-foot spire was supposed to resemble an oil derrick, and the motif was copied on some of Richfield's gas stations. It was built in 1929 but sadly torn down in 1969. It was located at 555 South Flower Street. So Los Angeles--tear down a jewel like this and put up yet another nondescript glass tower.
