Can't help noticing that the announcer calls a precognitive game. It's amazing how he anticipates every action and describes it before it happens. He seems to be operating according to some highly advanced algorithm. And this was back in 1963!

Thats because the video is recorded on film and a lot of this old film is played at the wrong speed. You notice things like players not seeming as fast as they should, and its because the video is slowed down from what it was actually recroded at. The audio is not, however, and so it gets more and more out of sync as it goes on

I'm not sure if young people can see the talent of these players. The game is so different now... Russell was olympic level high jumper. Havlicek was FMVP 11years later and champion also -76. Heinson was the couch of those 74,76 teams. KC.Jones was Larry Birds couch with 2champions in 80's. J.West was mastermind behind show time Lakers, Shaq & Kobe Team and 2015 Warriors. J.WEST is the One Michael Jordan look up to. Bob Cousy brings a lot of new things in basketball and was winning almost every year. Cousy was type of player that Kids were trying to follow with his moves. Just imagine what what bullshit JJ Reddick put over his name. And many more great things like fighting against racism and more. These are the legends pioneers and builders without any Star treatment and with very different rules. Peace&Love.

Sure, Bill for his time he was great but lacks a lot of skills.. All time rebounder and defender sure but scoring he lack skills... Dribbling and jump shots, breaking down defenders to get to the hoop wasn't his thing... This would be bad high school ball now... Not to mention they didn't even have all the best talent as they had another league, they competed with... Also, the league wasn't popular so most great athletes played other sports... When better talent came into the league you seen Wilts numbers drop and those weak post moves, he had that was working like his famous post up with a quick turnaround finger roll was getting sent by better athletes so Wilt started passing out of the post.... not to mention by 1970 college players wanted to go to the NBA instead of the ABA and the league got more popular and better athletes started to come into the league and they weren't facing guys that were a lot smaller plus the skill level was improving. This game is hard to watch

Contrary to what people born after 1980 might believe there IS an advantage to not leaving your feet when shooting.. the only drawback is possibly getting your shot blocked and perhaps a little less distance. I'm not advocating it, just saying there's nothing wrong with it if you're open enough to use it.
@richardblais5232
@richardblais5232 8 жыл бұрын
+CapAnson12345 you obviously do not have a jump-shot. Accuracy is improved simply by holding the ball way above your head, while in the air, rather than a set-shot, which starts below the shoulders and momentarily passes in front of your face, thus cutting off the sight line of the basket. Doesn't sound like much, but in a set-shot, there is very little time to recover from this interruption in aiming. In short, everything is wrong with the set-shot, and the jump-shot was a revolution akin to the slap-shot in hockey, except that the wrist-shot in hockey is still essential. Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I've been trying to get my kid to shoot a jump-shot, who refuses to perfect it, due to the difficult learning factor it presents. Very frustrating.
@CapAnson12345
@CapAnson12345 8 жыл бұрын
Dude.. slow your roll.. I know all the advantages of the jump shot, and the sight thing isn't as important as the angle, which makes a set shot much easier to block. Your kid will learn the jump shot when he gets tired of his shots getting swatted three or four rows deep into the crowd. You never really see bounce passes anymore either unless they're one handed and sort of flung around the defender.. but it's still a useful thing to know. Hook shots (proper ones) are also a thing of the past. So what? The more skills you accumulate, the better all around player you'll be.

CapAnson12345 agreed on the bounce pass, it's still very useful ... and we're agreed on the hook, another one my kid won't do ... it's an awesome shot, love watching Kareem roll it ... and Cousy was an ace with the set shot ... but it's only good for the foul line today ...

Interesting. Never seen this whole game before. Too bad about the out of sync sound - forced me to turn it off completely. Observations 1) Russell - he played whole game and was immense on the boards. At least 5 times he was able to block shots in such a way that they came down like rebounds instead of swatting them out of bounds. That’s an art. Of course, the Lakers were no match for him in the middle and rotated Wiley, Krebs and (I think) Ellis at center. 2) Cousy was excellent at the point and his handling was impressive even though this was his last game in his 13th season. 3) Heinsohn was also impressive down the stretch with a key steal for a layup, a key offensive rebound and clutch free throws. 4) The Celtics’ 8-man rotation was machine-like and, with the exception of center Russell and quarterback Cousy, had really finely tuned pieces that could play multiple positions (e.g. Havlicek could play 1, 2 or 3, Ramsey could slide into the 2 or 3, Sanders 3 or 4,etc.). 5). When the executed it, the Celtic fast break was a thing of beauty. Having said all this, I don’t think these guys would be stars today - with the possible exception of Baylor, West and Havlicek (but it’s still doubtful that even they would have HOF careers). Nonetheless, they dominated in their day and those that were to follow built off of them.

+James Jones Learning how to play a particular way took years and years to master. If older players are able to ajust to the actual style of play (your original premise); actual ballers could too! The only thing you can't teach is athleticism and according to many ex-NBA players, today's ballers are more athletic than ever. About th game itself. The modern basketball as we know today started to flourish after 1976 i.e. after the NBA-ABA merger. Defensive schemes became more complex shortly after both leagues merged : coaches started pressing & trapping while they asked their players to rotate & space on the defensive end (which helped double-team)... the pure man-to-man defense died with the old gimmicky NBA. Fans thought it was brand new when they were warching Rick Pitino's Knicks, but half the ABA teams were playing that way! On offense, teams started to work on the perimeters because dribbling rules became lenient which of course gave more freedom and responsabilities to the backcourt ballers (PG, SG, SF)... which of course translated into a faster pace of play and even more flashy moments. On the other hand, the three-point line restricted even more the center position. In the old-style NBA, centers were the foundations of their respective team. There was little to no great centers in the NBA rival (let's named them : ABA) before the merger. As an example, Wilt Chamberlain was good when he faced ABA stars in their matchups, but he never duplicate the gargantuan numbers he gathered in the NBA; but, when he faced NBA centers (whom were better and generally taller than ABA C's) he was head and shoulder above them. Thus, a year following the adoption of the three, centers production dropped by at least 10%. Hubbie Brown and Doug Moe were very critical on the NBA product.

'One of my big disappointments in my life was going into the NBA after their merger. The NBA was a rinky-dink league - listen I'm very serious about this. There was no camaraderie, a lot of the NBA players were aloof and through they were too good to practice or play hard'. Doug Moe

BarcaPoolFootball3 Put things in context and you'll see the picture. KAJ put great numbers in those contests, but these are his records in the NBA during 1971 & 1972 : - Lead the NBA in scoring two years in a row (1971&1972). - 10 times, KAJ scored at least 40 points in a NBA game in 1971. In the same year, hé gathered 50PTS in a game three times. - The following year, it was even better for KAJ! 18 games over 40PTS...

I've heard about Cousy all my life, so when I see footage of him (unfortunately there's not a ton of it out there), I enjoy watching him. My thoughts are as follows - - ahead of his time, great ball handler, good shooter, very smart, great team player - quick but lacked GREAT speed especially considering he was undersized, seems like he was frail (many of today's players would wear him down), clever but simple passing skills (not like the Showtime I became used to), not great defensively I'm no expert so it won't bother me if others disagreee. I believe that some or many, but NOT ALL of the players from the early to mid 60's could play today. I think Cousy would be a decent, NOT great PG against the current players. I don't think he compares to Magic, Oscar, Frazier, Nash, Isaiah (whom I didn't like) or Steph. Magic was amazing to follow here in LA. Even though he had some weaknesses when he was young, he worked hard & got better every year. He always produced assists & rebounds, but he became a consistent scorer even learning how to hit from the arc. He was underrated on defense, a team player & was clutch.

I disagree with you about his passing skills... and this game is a prove of it. Some of his passes were unbelievable, he passed the ball with such precission and speed, he had definitely great hands. In fact, It's one thing that I see in his game wich is not aged at all. The other is his IQ and understanding of the game and how fast he could think. But we have to had in mind that Cousy was more a 50's player than a 60's player, he didn't use the jump shot, for instance, and his physique was not good for today guard's standards... Anyway, he was an innovator and the first type of modern point guard and very enjoyable to watch him play, of course

1perfectstrangerr Hell yeah! My son would be too quick off the dribble. The players from the 60s would have never seen a crossover before. Guarding them would be easy. They only go toward their dominate hand. And their shooting form is flawed. You can't shoot with one-hand anymore the way Oscar and Elgin did. Those shots would get put back in your face these days. The last person to shoot one-handed was George McGinnis. And his game collapsed when the ABA merge with the NBA.

***** I am an historian of basketball. I know the NBA inside and out. People who romanticize about sports have a hard time excepting that the game has evolved. They don't like when people point how the differences in play. Its the same with classic movies (I am a movie historian, too). A lot of classic movies don't hold up very well, but they still get 4 stars when we they are reviewed. You want to give the 60s' era 4 stars, even when you can see that they don't hold up very well in comparison. I annoy you because I am willing to do what you are not... I express the difference. Some of the great players would still do well in the NBA if they played today (Wilt, West), but no way would they have the same stats. As far as when the game stop sucking...? I say somewhere in the early to mid 70s. The addition on Kareem, Cowens, Archibald, Maravich, McAdoo and more, ushered in a whole new generation of talent. When the NBA/ABA merger happened in 1976, the game became even more intense with stars like Julius, Gilmore, David Thompson and Dan Issel. Bird and Magic took the game to a different level. And then MJ, Hakeem, Barkley and Dominique set it off. The talent today is as great as ever, although the game doesn't appear to be as intense as it used to be. The NBA has governed with an iron fist over the last 15 years, which has taken much of physicality out of the game. The players today hug and feel each other up before, during and after the game, like never before. I preferred the NBA from 1980 to 1993. That's when the game was at its peak.
@RatedRex1
@RatedRex1 8 жыл бұрын
***** I didn't say they sucked. They were great in their time. But in comparison only a few hold up well. As far as players who played in the 60s and 70s... their stats were nowhere near the same. Only a few players like Jerry West, Havlicek and Rick Barry thrived offensively in both eras. Players like Chamberlain and Walt Bellamy saw their scoring stats diminish once the lane was widen and the player became more skilled. But you don't have to know basketball to see that the players of yesterday lacked the skills and athleticism that the players of today have. The tape is right here. You shouldn't deny what's right in front of you. How would Paul Hornung do in today's NFL. Hell, even Jim Brown's eye test doesn't compare well. No way Babe Ruth could swing a 44 ounce bat in today's baseball. Usain Bolt would roast Jesse Owens. Its no shame in acknowledging that sports, and its athletes, evolves over time.

Russell was a great player, but Wilt was better, more dominant & outplayed him most of the time. Russell doesn't deny that & has shown a lot of respect for Wilt in interviews over the years. Their personalities were different & Wilt was easy to criticize because he was a gentle giant. Maybe Wilt should have won more than 2 rings, but not more than 3 or 4 ('67, '69 & '72). He NEVER was consistently surrounded by HOFers like Russell was. If the 2 big men had traded places, it's likely Wilt would've had 10 or more titles & Russell would've had 2 or 3.

Bishop Boyd Yeah well they nearly beat the Celtics in 69 but blew a 2-0 lead, also 3-2, that was probably the greatest championship ever won by the Celtics because everyone thought they were old and tired, the Lakers even had balloons put up in the rafters ready to be released when they won but it never happened.

What I miss about basketball is the free flow of it on offense. When you put up 3 point lines on the court, you disrupt that flow. With no line, the players shoot the ball from where they are comfortable shooting it. And no one stands far outside waiting for it.
@mr.longjohn0014
@mr.longjohn0014 Жыл бұрын
So a skill gap? A 3 point line can add flow if you know how to shoot. Without the 3 point line it would force more traffic within lanes and in the paint.

I hate the myths of the early 60's. One of the biggest myths is the physical play and hard fouls and hard to get FT's ..... There is almost ZERO contact and the fouls were called twice as easily as today, and the league is rigged today! That's how easy the 60's fouls were called!

This video is the proof that you can't compare different eras. Russel, Jordan, Lebron, ...all oth these guys might be the best player of a generation but not the GOAT. None of these 1963 player could fit into modern NBA and could you imagine how dominant would be a 2020 player in this 1963 final?

So, 2020s players are transported back to 1963 with all the advantages, training, diet and health improvements. But 1963 players are frozen in their time period and go as is into the 2020s game. Your comparison falls apart. You would have to compare today's players as if they grew up in the late 1940s, against the 1960s players growing up in the 1990s.

@@Wixom2200 You mention West, Cousy, and Baylor as being able to play in today’s NBA. I agree. How about Russell? Havlicek? LaRusso? Heinson? Sam Jones? I think all of those guys could make it in the NBA today. They were all very good players.

@@frederickrapp5396 I agree 100 percent. This was Havlicek's rookie season and he played till the late 70s. At the age of 37 he more than held his own against Julius Erving! The players you mentioned plus other players like like Bob Petit who played in the 50s would dominate today. Imagine with the advances of nutrition, training, physiotherapy etc.

@GuitarDudeTv One should never compare the old days with current play. In '62 the game was hardly played at all outside of the states. The world wide player pool is now probably a thousand times larger than it was in the 60s. One also has to be aware that human beings add, invent, improvise and build a system of skills and training techniques over time. The crossover dribble, the step back jumper and the Euro step were residing only in the remote future. People who idealize the past like to pretend that current ball handling talents (and the rather stiff ball handling evident on this reel) result from rules or enforcement changes. This is nonsense - Cousy dribbled behind his back frequently in his younger days, and was never called for "palming" when guiding the ball from the side (inevitably needed to dribble behind the back.) Quite simply, these players did the best they could back in their day with the limited imagination and conceptualization that we can only critique with future knowledge. 70 years from now, fans will watch videos of Steph Curry and comment on the crudeness of his shooting technique. I am 70 years old and have to roll my eyes when fellow geezers slobber about the superiority of the old days.
@philwilson609
@philwilson609 5 жыл бұрын
@GuitarDudeTv The jumpshot was brand new back then, and some of the older players used an awkward looking one hand push shot. The two hand set shot would have been still employed by a handful of players like Dolph Schayes. Defenses were loose and not very physical because they did not need to be. Most players shot well under 40%. Basketball always evolves and the further back in time that one goes, the more undeveloped are the skills. If you read many of the comments on this thread it appears that many people watch this old footage and conclude that Cousy and Russell were better players than Steph and LeBron. There is nothing more elusive than reality. No player from 1962 could even play in a D-1 college game, and yet, without Cousy, Russell, West and Baylor there would be no modern NBA. These guys were the foundation.

All the ball handling drills in the world isn't gonna make up for lack of mental toughness. If you're a bench player today there's a reason for it. Lack of mental toughness puts you on the bench in any Era.

The man had a 48" vertical leap. He had the timing of an Olympic high jumper. He was 3rd in the trials in 1956. If he played now he 'd be the fastest C in the league. He played with his back to the basket and could hook with either hand. He was one of the great outlet passers of all time. If he played now he 'd be good for 8 points and 8 rebounds a game. Of course he's 80 now. You show your ignorance when you rip Bill Russell.

Greg Maxwell He had the physical tools, but his game would need to be DRASTICALLY different for him to get the same acclaim in the modern era. He'd still be a perennial DPOY candidate or winner, but 5 MVPs? Unlikely with no offensive game. 11 rings? That's highly circumstantial and that's a huge part of why he's regarded so highly. What if he played today and averaged 12 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks with zero MVPs and zero championships due to being on lousy teams? How GOAT would he be then?

I love the coments on here about how these athletes "couldn't play in today's NBA LOL. More like todays' "athletes" couldn't play in this NBA. See back then you had to DRIBBLE THE BALL, not take 5 steps and palm it all the time. You had ONE PIVOT FOOT, you couldn't shuffle your feet and take 11 steps! You couldn't LOWER YOUR SHOULDER TO CREATE SPACE, thats called CHARGING. There is more, but I am not going to bother. Todays athletes are the most pampered, overpaid, and lazy then the real athletes of the past! Bring back the REAL RULES of the NBA, and watch these buffons struggle to score 80 points as a team. Todays game is not the real NBA, it is as soft as a pillow, and the offensive player is allowed to charge, travel, push off to gain any advantage he needs to score. Just laughable!
