There comes a point when a man has to set aside his ego and admit he needs to get help to complete his task. you my friend are at that point. Take a step back and get someone to complete this so you can move on and try to get this somewhat completed before the first snow fall. With a new baby due any day you are getting over your head. Time to move forward with craftsmen that can complete this job quickly and more importantly safely

I have to agree with you here! But many of the problems can be attributed to " a hair out of square". A few years ago I watched a channel that was building a homestead and the house was timber framed. They went to Maine and took a timber framing workshop at Shelter, and even then they managed to arrange to have Shelter do a hands-on workshop at their place in Oregon. You can't learn delicate, precise hands on skills just by watching You Tube.

Exactly what I was thinking. There should be some type of wood filler, like sawdust mixed with a strong glue to fill that space back up and let it sit, then recut the post for the plate. Using a chainsaw doesn’t seem like the right tool to cut the slit for the plates. There’s got to be a better tool than chainsaw for the job.

You keep talking about the pro timber framers, and I have to say, it might be time to call one of them, to at least get some advice, if not hire them to do this portion for you. A not level knife plate, and out of plumb posts, could be a bit more than a hair out of square. Good luck! Just remember, there is nothing wrong with asking for help. By the time they read these comments they will have already finished these posts. They have been running about two weeks behind real time.
@marvincunha149
@marvincunha149 Ай бұрын
Ok here goes. As an observation, I've noticed that the plates you are making up for the posts, have the bolts you're putting in, sitting a little proud of the plate that the post will sit on. That . in turn will make the plate sit up, and the two side holes for the plates also be off a little, and once you've drilled the side holes, they can't be undone, unless you turn the post, and then also have to make a new cut for the plate to fit in. A quick fix for the bolt heads would be to notch the corners, then the post would sit flat. As for the slop inside, you might try welding washers to each side of the plate to fill in the slop, Just saying, and if all else fails, like others have suggested, hire people to get it done, or I can see it now, 4 ft of snow, etc. That's my two cents.

Regarding the mis-cut beam slot. I recommend using that side of the cut as the “top” of the beam and filling the slot with a wood fill. @Wdeane1957
@Wdeane1957 Ай бұрын
Simplest solution is to use the beam on a different concrete pier and attach the base plate 90 degrees from the first one. The slot is hidden so you don't see it once the post is in place. Cut another post for the plate that's already in place.

From the remarks from many, I can tell you have never sewn, knit, spun, crochet, woven anything. On a smaller scale, I have done all these things and far more, and initially failed spectacularly. I can’t say I am a master or an artist, but I can say, I make things for myself and others. Inspectors won’t pass things that aren’t safe. I almost burned a hole in the kitchen floor when I made lye soap for the first time. I admire them all for recognizing mistakes, undoing and redoing. If they decide to go to an expert, well, that too, is part of learning… trial and error. They aren’t trying to be Frank Lloyd Wright, they are doing the best with what they have. Keep trying, Trent, keep cooking that baby, Allie! I enjoy watching and learning and seeing you all trying your best. Bravo!!

You hired drywall finishers, and it saved time and reduced the stress. Why didn't you do the same with the timber framers? It certainly would have been faster and probably less expensive. Afterall, it's not like this is the end of the project, you still have about a million other things to do to complete this and other projects. I 100% have faith in you Trent that you can do this. Don't let the little devil of doubt and insecurity sit on your shoulder. This is a problem that can be tackled in multiple ways. The first way hasn't worked, now there just has to be some adjustment to find a different way. You are persistent, and tackle many things you have feared before with success. Whether you are able to come up with a solution that you and your support team can implement, or you instead hire someone to do it for you, I do not think any less of you and the work you guys have already done, or have any less desire to watch the content you put out. No human on this Earth does not make mistakes. What matters is the lessons learned along the way and the recovery. You've got this!!!

Simplest solution is to use the beam on a different concrete pier and attach the base plate 90 degrees from the first one. The slot is hidden so you don't see it once the post is in place. Cut another post for the plate that's already glued in place.

Done the knife plates ones, no fun!!! We ended up griinding the top of the plate to a be like a knife, sharp with a slight scoop or inverted moon, then we pounded it in the last 1/2-3/4 of an inch. That stopped the play and made it so that we didn't have to figure out how to carve it out all the way. Good luck bro.

Hope is not a strategy. You're in so deep under water the sun can't be seen at your depth. This is classic Trent-five unfinished major projects, a baby on the way, and no end in sight. It's time to stop thinking only of yourself (I know, impossible ask) and consider your wife and children. Hire experts who know what they're doing. Having two kids is three times the work of one because your wife will need your help. You'll either be not working on these projects or leaving her alone. This is pure ego; for the love of your family, STOP. And yes, Allie, your husband is doing insane things. He's not an idiot, just self-centered. Trent, you said, "everything is coming back to bite me in the butt." That's the mindset that got you here. No third party is acting against you; you're making costly mistakes, and your family is paying the price. The stress on your wife is immense. It's all on you, Trent.
