not sure that is true. in my gardening years, i knew a lot of old folks who were wonderful and became more like friends than people i worked for. they'd invite me in for a cuppa and to chat, some would lay on a table full of cakes and biscuits, some made sandwiches, some made soup. i remember them all and miss them. They'd also give the best tip at christmas. when they passed away i was gutted. i think part of my growing depression was losing so many nice people and not being able to replace them as the younger generations dont have the same outlook and attitude. i do recall the few asshats i ran into in my working days, but i wouldnt say i remember them the most. no doubt they did have added effect to why i ended up giving up work and moving abroad to get out of the rat race. Personally i remember the nice people the most as they are so hard to find in this F***** up word we live in

Hi Tony, I can relate to that, then I had a light bulb go on in my head, I decided that I was going to define the limits of my generosity, and you know the saying, if you are a giver then define your limits because takers don't have any. And you know people actually respect you more when you say " no, not possible" now and again, and you should never feel guilty about defining the limits of your generosity, because if you continually say yes , people will walk all over you and totally disrespect you.....I was over 40 years old before I really figured that out and put it into action.

I've often said that I'm done with helping people after similar incidents, but once I've cooled down I always think I can't be anything other than the way I am, especially on the rare occasion that somebody does me a good turn. I can remember a number of times where my van has broken down in remote or awkward places and random people have stopped to help, usually other tradesmen. It restores my faith in human nature and encourages me to keep helping anyone who needs it.

I know exactly how you feel. Humanity is my business. I'm a registered nurse. I worked throughout Covid. I am a very hard worker and work long 12hr shifts rarely sitting down and frequently missing my breaks. Until recently, I got to work 1hr early to get started as it is a labour-intensive, exhausting endless job. The staff exploit my kind nature and my hard work ethic. They sit at the nurse's stations and don't help so I end up doing 80% of what is a very heavy workload. I go home absolutely exhausted. After I put my foot down and complained about them not pulling their weight. One of them put in a datix against me for basically coming in early. I could not be more appalled by these lazy staff. I'm the one up for discipline. It's a really ugly situation. I've put in for a ward transfer.

Maybe we as the do gooders expect “them” to make allowances but invariably they dont. Like another commenter said theres a world full of decent folks out there and what I say to people in the same boat is that its just the percentage rule ie there are a few percent of negatives we all must wade through and even after all these years I still get the odd niggle every now and again. I have recently got myself a cancer diagnosis and that makes you see life with a little more perspective. Keep on being you its what makes the world a better place, Regards Stuart from up North.

Thanks for all these great comments👍 I've tried to get around to replying to everyone, it's getting difficult now but I'm reading through them all. I've really learnt from them and I'm sure others can too. For me..always take a minimal payment for these small jobs as it's simply a transaction with no emotional expectations. I'm not planning on becoming 'that guy' tho and no doubt will help out when needed. A great quote that I've had in my head for a while regarding dealing with situations that happen in your life is this. Ships don't sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them. Don't let what's happening around you get inside you and weigh you down. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment 👍 I've moved on now and back to having some great interactions with people I meet. I'm sure many of you will continue to do so too🙏

So no you shouldn't be that guy that foes round charging for everything, they are a certain type of people we don't need anymore of. The real quote is ' no good deed goes unpunished ' Now what this really means, toothed people that understand it, is that you go around doing good deeds, knowing that they will be punished. That's what makes it a good deed. If you fly around the universe thinking all your good deeds should never be punished , you havnt read the quote and you have your head in the sand. No good deed goes unpunished. So do the good deed and know it will come back to bite you. That's why it's a good deed.

No good deed goes unpunished mate. I've always helped family and friends out with fixing their cars, doing building jobs etc (and never, ever sought or received payment), no matter who they were but after a divorce some years ago where I went through 4 years of hell with legal wrangle and Court appearances, I took a good look at my life and realised that when I need help, support or even just a friendly ear, no one and I mean no one was there for me. Not family, not friends and so I just said "f" the lot of them and I now look after my kids and myself and the whole world can kiss my a$$. I'm far less stressed and have more time on my hands to spend with my kids and to have some "me" time too. People just take advantage of your generous nature but most have short memories and don't reciprocate in my experience. Naturally I'm now the "bad one" as I refuse to help out but it just makes me laugh as those people, family and friends vanished when I needed help.

I can 100% relate to this because I’m a gardener too. I still find myself doing the little extras for people within reason or if my time will allow it . I completely get where you are coming from , the trick for me is to continue to occasionally do the little extras for clients but if they start to have petty, fussy or unreasonable complaints then that’s it as far as the small added extras go , I then just stick to my original brief moving forward into the future. Nathan, there’s an old saying that goes, “No good deed goes unpunished”. I’m a commercial landlord and I’ve always prided myself on being fair with tenants and helping them when I thought there was a genuine need. Like you, I had my generosity constantly abused during the Covid period with rental forgiveness and reductions. Not a word of thanks through it all from any of them despite knowing many of them personally. So I’ve hardened up since then and now, simply play a straight bat as it were. I’m still a fair minded person but now won’t be swayed by anyone’s hard luck story. Live your life on you’re own terms mate. The “give me free stuff” brigade don’t deserve your compassion.

I saw ECB chairman I think comment that mortgage owners had it easy and cheap for long.... as bitter as that now feels first glance, it is very true. Sometimes you have it good, sometimes someone else. over time on average that evens out. There's just not much to "teach lesson" these days coz help is so easy to get. Over longer time Ive started to think similar way of foodbanks... those can be good but similar problem, coz if ya live far from those, bus ticket is too much so only those lucky ones and brazen enough to go there can collect free food. Im not saying everyone is like that but over time these people have increased a lot. During covid they made smart and delivered home, chance to inspect if they are talking true or not + avoided this wasted time and energy of stressed people with lack of sleep and food having to wait there out in public.

After 25 years in retail I finally reached this point too. Just like you I am always asked for help from customers, mostly older people or people with some disability or something, and I have always been more than happy to help. Most people are genuinely grateful and I often have a nice conversation or a laugh with these customers. More and more however these people were starting to annoy me and I am now VERY selective about who I actually help. The first thing I started to notice was people with no obvious issues were now asking for help reaching/finding things. I though to myself...ok, they could have non obvious issues or this could simply be their first time in our store. So I let it go. Over time however I realised many of these people simply didnt want to bother looking for things. I cannot stand lazy people. So now I just point them in the general direction and walk away. The biggest issue however, and the one that made me just refuse to help most people anymore, was when I would help someone find/lift something and they would immediately ask me for something else. Before I knew it I was basically doing their entire shopping for them as they strolled slowly towards the checkout chatting on their phones. This started to happen almost daily and I had enough. The final straw was an elderly woman who came in and needed help lifting 3 bags of compost into her trolley. These are big bags and probably weigh as much as she did so obviously I was happy to help her out and lifted them in. To my slight annoyance, but also understanding, she asked if I would put them into her car after she paid. She said her son would take them out at home. So of course I said that wouldnt be a problem. I lost the plot however when we reached her car and I discovered her 50yr old son sitting in the front drivers seat playing Raid Shadow Legends on his phone. I wont repeat what I actually called him for being a lazy piece of human waste. That was the moment I lost my faith in humanity and I doubt I will ever get it back.

Am I missing something here? Isn’t retail a SERVICE industry? You work there everyday so you would know where stuff is. The customers don’t. It’s often frustrating and time consuming trying to figure out where stuff is in all the different shops. The customer doesn’t do shop layout, stock the shelves, have access to inventory lists in the hundreds of different shops they may frequent. What does your job description say? Does it say serve customers, or is it just stand at a register and collect the money? Just stock shelves…. Getting annoyed with customers who ask for assistance or are made to feel you can’t be bothered assisting them, or berating someone minding their own business in a car waiting for a relative to finish shopping, is a fast way for customers not bothering to come back. Less customers means less money to the business, means less money to pay for your job. Might mean you lose your job. You say 25 years in retail, yet you don’t seem to understand that your pay comes from the customer via the business? Consider the online shopper…. Does a search on a website…item found in seconds, payment in seconds, items delivered at door through post. Easier..no travel to shop, no parking, no difficulty finding where item is, no queuing to pay, faster payment. Saves a lot of time and hassle. Postage often costs less than petrol and time lost in getting to a shop, parking, finding items, queuing at a register, loading / unloading items in a car. No need to be on premises…no need for retail worker. The fellow in the video is talking about doing things while NOT getting paid for it. You are paid for your time in the shop, correct?

@jenny1234361 customer service does not mean they get to use the staff because they are lazy. It's about helping people who need it. I stated quite clearly I will happily help genuine customers but they are not the issue. There is a growing trend of entitlement and laziness which I will not give into. Also, just for reference, my job description dot not in fact mention customer service. Most retails, at least here in Ireland anyway, do not put that in job descriptions anymore fir the very reason that it puts pressure on staff to do anything and everything a customer wants. Training staff to be helpful and polite as much as possible is what we do and that is all we need. So no I won't lose my job for refusing to help someone that does not actually need it because even if they complain my boss will know why I refused and will have my back. I actually have the highest customer service rating in my region and top 5 in the country so clearly your idea of what my job should be is wrong.

This is the first time I've visited your channel Nathan, and let me tell you, I resonate with you massively. What you're dealing with is a deeply entitled societal epidemic, a Heinx 57 variety of personality disorders which no longer seem to have a filter, which thinks it has the right to pick someone as the days victim to beat with a stick. It's a growing problem which seems to be affecting many people who are more of a sanguine type of person, who is mature and civilised enough to be non-confrontation, reserved, polite and chooses to diffuse issues rather than escalate them. The problem is, these choleric lot *want* confrontation, they *want* retaliation, they *want* full scale wars, all so they can offload whatever troubles and fears etc. burdening them like you don't also have those affecting your life. Many, myself included, have been orientated to submit to the pressure placed on you to be a people-pleaser, a yes-man, loaded with expectations to do things for gratis because there is some written law that says you are obligated to for people who simply can't be a*sed. I've dealt with it in my own family since I was a teenager where nothing you ever do is good enough, nothing, and when it is there is always something to nit-pick, minimise and invalidate about you and your efforts to make you feel like s***. I started my own gardening business myself and sacked it in within two years because people either wanted me to buy, plan and do everything so they didn't have to, didn't pay me or pushed their luck....or they'd call me to their property, ask for a quote and advice only to steal the ideas to do the work themselves. My biggest customer actually expected me to buy everything, do the work and then pay me after, who'd then complain to me that I didn't remind her to pay me. And me being that soft-touch to keep her sweet just tolerated it but ended up going broke, to the point I couldn't even afford to put petrol in the motor. Still, not even a jolt to her conscience, but then turned on me again when I had to resign from the job. People are parasites I'm sorry to say, and want everything for nothing. Most of the worst ones have never done a days hard graft in their life, all of them are real life Boyce's and who look down on us as lowly plebeian peasants because we've got a few quid less than them and get our grubs dirty for a living. The more you say yes, the more you become the town simp because as soon as word of mouth spreads that this guy does freebies, what's good for the goose is good for the gander in their eyes; but the instant you say no - all hell breaks lose. They think 'how dare you say no to me!' They'll even go so far as to muddy your name so you don't get anymore business. But let me just say, don't let these people erode your principles mate. People may perceive your complaint here as sour grapes but many know what you're talking about. They'll see it as just being isolated incidents, but they are small drops accumulated over a long time, as the old saying goes 'slow dripping wears the stone' and eventually you just throw in the towel. As you said, you know who are good for it and appreciative but people want to use others as their emotional punchbag to find trivial things to moan and kick-off about to offload their anger, frustration and agitations, without any conscience for the fact that we're human beings with feelings and emotions too, who are under far more pressure and stress everyday trying to keep our own heads and our family's heads above water in what is fast moving towards a 21st century Depression and a society where every sadistic bstd either wants to cancel you or take a piece of flesh because as men we're still walking around in 2023 with that chivalry cloud hanging over us that says we're only good for how much blood we spill. Stay as you are Nathan. If you let them hack away at your values my friend, you end up losing them for yourself and those who deserve them the most. Trust me, I went there, and it's a hard fight to find the road back. Take care. All the best 👍

Service industries are tough, sure being some retailer can be too, but they can be smart and just wait for something to get more demand, no hardship to collect money there once timing is right. As much as I dont like apple policies on repair etc, thye have my respect for not budging with price cuts and all that people and experts of all kinds, let alone amateur in that business journos, constantly pressure them to 'should do'. That being said, be it dvd or smartphone, much easier than doing same with service like these 2 industries, based purely on work.

People like that will never change it's who they are, I learnt this from my own family, year in year out it was always me running around putting myself out and yet the petty complaints never stopped, you can never please some people. My mum told me a quote about this because she could see first hand what was going on as it was my dad and my brother who were like this, both totally self absorbed ! The quote is "The more you do the more you may" well I stopped being made a mug of years ago and now I won't do anything at all for my brother and to this day he still refuses to see his own selfishness, my dad on the other hand actually apologised to me in recent years when he finally faced up to what a selfish narcissist my brother is and has always been. I just lost mum and dad in the last 6 months after living with them and looking after them for the last 7 years and even now my brother is making it all about him, he didn't approve of me looking after them because we didn't get his okay thus he never lifted a finger in all that time, he used it as a cop-out. I stayed with them so they could die at home which is what they both wanted, they asked me if I was prepared to see it through which I did and I thought my brother would be relieved to know that our folks were being well cared for in their final years but no! I've had customers that have taken the piss a few times but it's so much harder to deal with when it's family because you still have to see them the only good thing is that now my folks are gone I can move on and break all contact with my toxic brother. Anyway mate be as careful as you can be and try not to let these people change your good nature, you clearly are one of the good guys !

I have been a bad human. Now I am a good one, or at least try to be. My greatest strength is empathy but you are right, help always seems to be one way. Thats Charity not help, but we all know these individuals are not charitable cases in “need of help” - when you said “its not the thing to do”, it absolutely is mate! Stupid people need to be put in their box or it bleeds over.

I totally understand what your saying but don't turn into a bitter, nasty person, not everyone takes advantage or has that intention to after a good deed to have a selective memory. I had a builder that did some work for me, everything he said he could do, I said tell me a figure so I can pay him as don't expect something for nothing, inculding extras that he agreed to. All was good, I had just lost my mom and was just trying to take 1 day at a time, which he ended up knowing about. He came in one day, did a quick job and I said could you do this if you remember. The job was nothing major took 10 mins, just changing over a fire alarm. I never asked him to do anything without paying #facts. I had drawn out cash in advance to keep at home in case he felt he didn't price correctly due to materials. He ripped my head off about the fire alarm and made out I was taking advantage of him. I said I asked you when you came in and you said yes and I reminded you as you were about to leave plus, I have £20 to pay you as previously agreed. I reminded him that I hadn't asked him to do anything without me paying something. He then peddled back. I gave him the benefit of that situation and put it down to him having a bad day. Mind you I gave him loads of hot drinks and biscuits on request and was a laid back customer, by choice, so he was well looked after here. So it comes to a final job, I thought to help out as he was struggling to find what part I wanted I would get bits in as he couldn't get the parts and was happy for me to get it, which I double checked. I asked 5 times what I needed to get. Got it, was really chuffed I could help as had written all information down which he asked me to repeat. I called left a message saying got the stuff as agreed. See you on such a such a date. He rang back to state, he had a problem and I seem to think things are done for free wtf, he ripped my head off like I was a piece of trash, and made out I kept adding things to tasks that were agreed and I had written down and gone over with him. All the work I asked him to do was agreed at the start of the working relationship to get jobs done so I hadn't added fart as extra to tasks. I felt like crap and was really upset as mum had not long passed. Told him that was not my intention where he felt used as anything asked was agreed in advance with our verbal agreement and I paid for everything. It turned out he had dropped his dinner and had a bad day so took it out on me when the issue was with a customer that did take the piss, not me and the fact his cooked dinner ended up on the floor. I will never be as laid back again and needless to say I didn't use him after that for other jobs, as was transferring his issues onto me as a easy target The nice customer. So I would say to you, the feeling works both ways, but gage people and assess, don't turn into someone bitter not addressing the real issues because it is easier to be upset with other people that are actually good decent people. Do good and good Karma will follow. If you run into someone who has taken the pee like that lady you did the garden for free, tell them truths don't bottle it in and snap at the wrong people or judge others as if their them it just isn’t fair. Stay blessed.

Total with you nath, had it myself last month and I lost sleep over it and was genuinely upset by the whole thing .. Used to do a customers mums garden , she wasn't a well off old lady so we used to just cut the front and she would cut the back lawn herself, after 5 years of doing this the old dear was struggling so I decided to cut the back for her free of charge this carried on for 15 years until she passed 😔she was a loverly woman and I'd taken all my 3 sons to visit her when they were born.. 6 months after she had died I was still doing the garden and I thought why am I doing this garden on the mega cheap for the family that were in the process of selling the house, so I bumped it up a tenner which was still a little on the cheap side and I put her daughters up a fiver to keep up with inflation, well she kicks off sacks me and gets another gardeners after 20 years and not only that she got her nextdoor neighbours to go with her new gardener to so 3 customers gone all because I'd cut her mums back lawn 300 times for free and picked up all the leaves for 15 years to😅 some people are cunts.. her mother would be turning in her grave if she new,the house is up for sale for 450000🤪

That's crap mate, the family should have done something generous for all those years you did for their mother what they couldn't be bothered to do. Drives me mad in fact, we had similar years ago where we were maintaining an old dears garden. Not for free but we did loads extra, around the house too and even got some shopping now and then when I knew she couldn't get out. Did loads and all she ever said was how busy and how lovely her family were, I never met them before she passed but she always said she told them how helpful I was was she phoned them. She passed, they were around her places like flies on shit getting their hand on what they could and I didn't get a thank you for all you did for our mum or anything. No interest in her until they could get something without helping her around the house or garden. Does get to you those ones. Cheers mate, appreciate the time to write that comment 👍

i know how you feel mate. i was a gardener too. ive had all the experiences you mention too. the oldest customers tend to be the better ones unless they get to the senile stage. the pain in the arses tend to be those below 50 who think only they matter, the NIMBY types. i ended up dropping one job after another to avoid annoying situations , older customers passed away, until i got down to a job or two a day and so depressed i found it hard to leave the house at all. Life can get to you that way, which is sad when all you want to do is help folks and make a few quid to live, but you end up feeling used. society is getting worse, just pick and choose more wisely who you do favours for as some aren't worth the hassle

I had a guy witness my car hit in a car park when I was out eating. He had to come tobthe police station to make the report and forbhis time I gave him a litre bottle of Jack Daniels no. 7. We need to reward people for doing good things so they keep being awesome but sadly most people are takers and stingey. Hell I do a lot of stuff for free and save people time and money and all i would like back in return is some thanks and gratitude for a good deed done, extremely rare to happen and from my own observations women are the worst with entitlement as they have been conditioned for people to kiss their arse. Also same does for people fucking up, getting an apology or admission they are at fault is like pulling test, for them to offer something to rectify the problem again is stupidity rare. I'm going to stop being the nice guy as it feels like you're being exploited and taken for a dummy, everyone is out for themselves to get as much as they can for themselves, lie, cheat or steal
