One of my favorite aspects of the song is its borrowing from Rachmaninoffs lilting piano concertos. The slow building of the same sorts of chords, adding harmony and harmony, like it’s all going to both fall through the sea and break apart in orbit at the same time. I’m very fond of those concertos and I’d wager Mr Sondheim was as well
