“I want you to understand that it is good to feel chilly,” Patrick Rensen says. Though there are different ways to burn calories, Rensen argues there is a fairly straightforward way to achieve this: lower the room temperature.
“Activating brown fat to burn 200 kcal per day,” says Rensen, “can translate to about three kilograms of weight loss per year. We are now investigating whether nutritional and pharmacological interventions may be effective as well.”
As a Professor of Endocrinology at Leiden University Medical Center, Rensen studies the role of sugar and fat metabolism in diabetes and heart disease. In particular, Rensen is investigating something called ‘brown fat’ which is different from the all too familiar ‘white fat’ that tends to collect around our middles. “We know that babies are born with brown fat,” says Rensen, “but we thought it disappeared after a few years...”
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

When it's cold, I get much hungrier and tend to eat more. Whereas when it's hot, I rather want to drink water than eat. So this theory is not something that would work for me.

brown adipocytes can actually take up fatty acids from blood and as such indirectly deplete white adipocytes of triglycerides(fat). During a lecture he gave me he also mentioned that by overall stimulation of B3 adrenergic receptors, brown fat tissue becomes more active and proliferates, even within white fat tissue. (so-called beige fat tissue, as it is a mixture). To comment on iluan Hernandez, These cells can also be activated by B3 adrenergic agonists, which nullifies the need for cold induced stimulation which would eventually let the body produce these agonists(read: adrenaline). An adverse effect of such a treatment might be heightened body temperature though, which can be more problematic in warm countries.

That's easy for people living above the tropics, but if you live (lie me) in a place where it's never colder than 20°C then this is not really a game changer (unless one is willing to use a lot of electricity on AC). Heck now that I think of it, not a single house in my neighbourhood has central heating XD

Cherries Jubilee I found this review of a study when trying to find it, I think it is what he is using: In one study, Swedish researchers scanned five subjects after they’d spent two hours at temperatures ranging from 63°F to 66°F. During the scan itself, the subjects cooled their body temperature even further by repeatedly placing one foot in ice water for five minutes at a time, followed by five minutes out of the water. The investigators found not only that all the subjects had detectable brown fat deposits, but that the added exposure to the cold ice water boosted their brown-fat activity 15-fold. +John Karavitis Yeah, this talk is full of shit. Weight maintenance is not about energy balance (calories consumed vs calories burned -that notion is antiquated, 1950s industrial food propaganda). What matters is metabolic health and a diet that promotes metabolic health. It should come as no surprise that the type of food that promotes metabolic health is not the type of food that is part of the modern, industrial diet.

Ratty from InsideFPV Try to understand the distinction between "reason" and "explanation." For example, the "reason" it gets dark at night is because the sun sets in the west. But this is not an explanation of the dynamics involved. The dynamics involve axial rotation, axial tilt, and orbit around the sun. Do you appreciate the difference.

Eat less, move more, eat healthy low fat food etc blah blah. Non of it works....you will just become chronically hungry. His idea of weight gain = Calories in - Calories out is also false. Weight gain is mediated through insulin levels. If you are, like me, a person that is struggling to lose the weight (i was never over BMI 25) you should start intermittent fasting and restricting your sugar/carbohydrate intake. Search for dr Jason Fung, he will explain how insulin drives obesity.

Calorie in means how much of the energy in the food you eat your body actually absorb, and that is something that differs greatly from person to person. It really is as simple as calorie in-calorie out, but it has nothing to do with how many calories the food you consume has in it.
@ApaX1981
@ApaX1981 7 жыл бұрын
+Kingportable, But it is true. What this man is telling you is bullshit...and we have 50% of overweight people to prove it. Just cutting calories does not and will not work....ever! Cutting carbs will decrease your base metabolic rate. You will lose weight in the beginning, but after about a year your stuck eating less, and not losing a single pound.....and your hungry and cold until you cannot take it anymore and you will pack on the pounds. Working out does not work either. Even if you put in 60 minutes every single day...the amount of energy you will burn is, at best, a moderate fraction of your total energy consumption. Allot of work with hardly any effect. The problem is that we have put our bodies in this sugar mode ----> high insulin levels during the day. This, eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, diner, snack etc etc is so retarded. All the advice we give fat people is to eat those kind of foods that make their bodies physically incapable of accessing the fat reserves. The only way to lose weight is: reduce carbohydrate intake (even more so if it is carbs without fiber) & intermittent fasting.

It's actually supposed to be more than what he said. Some studies put the calories burned at 250 calories per 3 hour periods for beginners, and others at 289 calories per 2 hour periods for people who have been doing it for 6 weeks or more. Keep in mind that this is more or less for 66 F temperature. If the temperature is even lower, you'll burn even more. Moreover, this isn't talking about shivering, since shivering can burn upto 400 calories an hour.

Around 3:50, Patrick says that WHITE fat is the type of fat that's bad for you, as it causes diabetes and heart disease, to then move on to explain how to burn more brown, less dangerous fat. I don't see the logics here. First you talk about one of the main causes of diabetes and heart disease (white fat), to then completely ignore it.
@0est1
@0est1 9 жыл бұрын

Robert Allik Brown fat oxidizes itself for heat. Brown fat burns itself. Not white fat, while white fat serves the biggest risk. So, basically he's saying "I found a great and easy way to burn some of the not so unhealthy fat!". It makes little sense to me. You'd want to burn the unhealthy fat as a priority.
@0est1
@0est1 9 жыл бұрын
SinisterSkip Brown fat draws lipids and carbohydrates from outside the cell. The mitochondria in brown fat uses those to generate heat.
@SinisterSkip
@SinisterSkip 9 жыл бұрын
Robert Allik I think we're just talking semantics now. With brown fat in this context I mean the mitochondria AND the lipids (and certain other tissues) around them, same with white fat. Conclusion remains the same, brown fat isn't burning white fat. White fat is the problem and that's not getting solved. The current fat-map shows we only carry a couple pounds of brown fat. It's there around the neck, shoulders and collarbones. When the brown fat is burned up, you're largely done with direct low-temperate induced weightloss. So, I don't see any problem solved here. You're burning a couple pounds of harmless fatstores with turning the heat down. We can't tackle white fat that way, it's not burned by low-temperate detection. White fat is the problem, and it's not solved, which is my point.
@SinisterSkip
@SinisterSkip 9 жыл бұрын

Good luck with your long life.
@brule1763
@brule1763 8 жыл бұрын
+x BublizZ Kinda. Except your muscles will still atrophy. If you take in excess calories and use them up you'll build/maintain muscle mass. The "eat less" approach will leave you skinny-fat at best (or anorexic at worst). I'd say that it's better to eat excess healthy food (within reason) and work it off than simply reducing calories. This is because being active comes with a host of health benefits ranging from strong muscles and heart to better hormone balances and sleep cycles. There's more to the equation of being healthy than "calories in vs. calories out" That being said, you can't outrun a bad diet. So if your plan is to exercise more as a means of burning off that order of french fries you're better off simply eating less.

So global warming is causing fat people. LOL... Anyway, if this were true, Native Alaskans would be thin. I haven't see a photo of one slim eskimo. And why do people seem slimmer and lose weight in the summer? And if brown fats keep you warm in order to lose weight, it's actually being warm that helps you lose weight. LOL
