I’m late but also I think it’s symbolic as well. Him having a bigger shell is very indicative of Raph’s character because he is more closed off and less open with his emotions than the other turtles. So him having a bigger/thicker shell is representative of that

I love the idea of a young Raphael being a little chunky and bigger than the rest because they'll probably have him just be jacked and the biggest when he's older if this is gonna be a series of movies. Plus it adds to the charm of them still being kids because I know a lot of people, myself included, went through that phase where they got wider but not taller until they got that massive growth spurt and everything evened out lmao

5:15 Yeah, I noticed that the weapons are not that polished or symmetrical. It gives off that homemade feel because splinter had to show the boys how to forge their own weapons. The hilts are made out of wood would therefore makes sense because you couldn't really get any traditional materials down the sewer. And the fact that the blades are not symmetrical and jagged shows they are not made of attritional Japanese medals either. It also shows how hard these guys train together.

I think the traditional Japanese materials would easily result in Jagged weapons if they weren't crafted with the high skill level of traditional Japanese method, but I get what you mean. But what exactly are the handle supposed to be made of it not wood?

@@OdaKa the other person may be referring to the tsuba and Kashira or the guard and pommel. Those are usually made out of some type of metal but in the trailer they look like they’re wooden as well instead of just the handle.

God, I LOVE everything about these designs! There’s pieces of all of the best designs from over the years, but they’re still completely recognizable. You can just tell that this entire project was a labor of love. I truly believe we are in for something special. And GREAT catch on the Gojo sticker! What an awesome touch.

I really dig how the turtles each have their own distinct feature. Leo has his classic 80's design with a few more embellishments added, Raph has a bandana that wraps all the way around the top hemisphere of his head, Donnie obviously has glasses, but he also wears headphones around his neck, and Mikey has braces and is built a lot slimmer than the rest. This movie is going to be nothing but a joyride.

I think these look great! My favorite turtles design is that when they look like their 1980 versions with light differences in their body structure and gear that adapts to their personality (like Leo being taller and Donnie using glasses).

I really like the new Turtle Designs! Out of all the designs, Leonardo is my favorite design from Mutant Mayhem. I even noticed that Raphael and Donatello has some features from the Bay Movies including the Red Pirate-Style Headband for Raphael and the glasses for Donatello. Really like it. Hopefully if this movie is good, this should give Paramount the opportunity to learn from that movie when they make a new Live-Action TMNT Movie.

I think they did such an excellent job of taking the classic 80s turtle design and modernizing them so they feel fresh! They're based off of them, but they aren't at all, for lack of a better word, goofy. The vibe is totally different in a way that feels new and fun and cool. I love that you pointed out all of the similarities of the wood in their weapons. I wonder if they make them themselves? Really funny to me that some elements of the Bay movie turtles (Donnie's glasses and Raph's mask design) are present here. I think it's honestly brave to say "hey, maybe that wasn't the best or most well-liked version of this franchise, but that doesn't mean we can't keep the good/interesting parts." And yeah, I like having Donnie with glasses and a few extra accessories, it feels appropriate with him being the gear guy. I do wonder about Mikey's braces, though. Where did they find a dentist? Did Donnie do those? He seems a little young for that lol.

I definitely think their wood/brownish red weapon hilts are meant to evoke the brown color weapons of the Playmates 1988 toys like the black belts+yellow initial. I can really tell they took the art team to study the old toys its really cool to see just hits different spot of my nostalgia than the 87 cartoon. I always felt the toys had a more vibrant style to them than the cartoons or even comics.

I really like the designs too! It's like the old school action figures came alive lol I honestly believe that they will grow up in sequels and so will the designs. Meaning, Mikey's head will shape up more like the rest of the turtles and Donnie's voice will break through puberty. Leo is pretty much perfect while Raph's tooth will fill in and/or match his headband like his brothers.

Raphael’s sia blades are taped for a reason. A traditional one is not bladed and is round because it is a defensive weapon. This versions seem to be bladed so if Ralph were to put his fingers in between the 3 prongs he would cut his fingers so the tape is there to stop him from cutting himself

Can't wait to see how this new TMNT goes. As an artist and TMNT fan, I love how the characters have evolved over time. I will say though that Mikey and Raph's head designs aren't really my fave for this one. If we are to assume they are all the same species or turtle. Unlike in TMNT Rise were they are different. Granted I think from an animation stand point, this was done in order to give the characters a better range of facial expressions. Considering that both Mikey and Raph would be the two to get into the most danger/ shenanigans. Having a bigger or wider head would allow for more exaggerated expressions compared to what Leo or Donny could make.

Overall I like the designs, I agree Leo looks best, and with him being my favorite turtle, that counts for a lot. One of the weirdest things to me in the trailer was just how often Raph's mask/wraps looked purple/pink due to lighting. Definitely, an odd choice to use so many shots in the trailer where Raph's color isn't clear, hopefully that isn't too prevalent throughout the whole film. My only big issues with the designs are Mikey's braces and Donnie's glasses + headphones(if the headphones are going to be there all movie). I just think those are unnecessary and take away from the ninja aesthetic(though I get it is meant to add to the teenager aesthetic and I won't fault them for trying something)

Raph is the second-oldest in the IDW comic line. Birth order tends to correlate with personality, and families of four tend to have their second-born child with a Raph personality. Usually, not always.

I find it interesting that Leo looks the most stressed out of all the turtles in both trailers. I’m hoping to see some character growth with him and him learning to grow into his role as a leader. In my opinion, I honestly wouldn’t mind some or of panic attack/freak out scene with him at some point in the movie because it would really emphasize the struggling he’s going through. I mean, assuming they are as young as 13, that age would be really difficult to hold responsibility as leader. It would make his character feel more realistic and relatable for teens under immense amount of stress (which almost all teens usually are).

I'm liking the feel of the animation it has for me a Clay animation vibe going on in the textures , like that of Wallace and Gromit. Looking forward to another movie esp hearing Jackie Chan voice Splinter which at the moment we haven't seen in another trailer to my knowledge

I don’t know if it’s just me, but it almost looks like Raphael’s sais are repurposed garden tillers, just bent, flattened and sharpened. In fact, it looks like all of the turtles weapons are just things that were found laying around and shaped into weapons, though I don’t know what. Wonder what else was used to make them? Maybe more different kinds of garden tools? Considering a lot of weapons origins in history as gardening implements, and vice versa, it would be really kind of clever if that was the case.

biggest thing i love about all of this is they LOOK like teenagers exclusively. no denying, not older not younger, they're in their mid-teens precisely. probably the best visual rep of TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles i've ever seen

Idk if I have a favorite head-shape but I really like how differently built the brothers are in general. I wanna say that was an early-mid 2K thing they introduced and I’m glad they’re sticking with that. I’ve always gravitated towards the versions of the franchise that leaned into their more individual teenage/brother qualities so I’m hyped for this. 😂 I don’t think I can pick a favorite from this bunch

I believe that the sticker on Mikeys nunchucks is actually a googly eye or eye ball sticker (probably has another one on the other side to match) and I think it’s meant to be a smiley face since there was what seemed to be a smile engraved in the wood under the eye sticker :)

For me my favorite of all 4 is Donnie, I usually dislike the extra accessories but they nailed here, is not overwhelming with ton of gears like the Bay films is just a few extra stuff in his belt and the glasses and headphones that showcase he is just a kid, it fit with his more geeky and dorky personality, I adore the shape of his head and proportions. My only nitpick is his missing cross chest belt, I love when Donnie have it. Second fav is Leo, he looks CLASSIC, and I love that look, all you mentioned absolutely on point, he might be the best design, just not my favorite design. Mikey is my third favorite, I love how SMALL he is more like a very young kid than a teenager, showcase his innocence as the youngest brother, I like his proportions even his big head XD. Ralph is my least favorite, not a bad design, just my personal least fav, I like that since 2012 Ralph always have some cracks in his front shell and back, love that rough badass beastly style for him, love that his belt and weapons since more damage like he abuse them and keep breaking all his stuff, is a nice touch. Overall, love all 4 designs.....will you make a breakdown on the other characters?
