The statistical breakdown of ICU patients by body weight doesn't look any different than what you'd find in the general population. Isn't 65% of the population overweight in the US and UK? The only takeaway I have from this data is that BMI doesn't play a very significant role.

@kildareire4 жыл бұрын
It's a fair point, the medical community are always banging on about blaming weight for everything, often biased/blinding themselves to looking at other factors that might be causing the issue. We are very biased against overweight people in our society. Having said that, the BMI needs to be analysed in line with comorbidities, ie where was the spread of comorbidities within the BMI? Maybe all the low BMIs would have had all the comorbidities or maybe they were concentrated on the high BMI side.

My family hosted two Korean students in January. The students fell ill one week into their stay. Soon after my kids and wife fell ill and they complained about not being able to smell or taste, headache, diarrhea, fever for two to three days, coughing And our youngest said he could not breathe. My kids were so tired my wife had to carry them to the bathroom. My wife could not get out of bed for two days. She said nothing helped with the pain. I had to work and decided to take a lot of vitamin c, 5,000 mg a day, and I did not get as sick as they did. This lasted 3 weeks. We thought they were getting better and then they would get sick again. I’m 100% convinced we had it back in January and it was rough. Hope you can comment on this Dr. Campbell

Surely the rates for BMI are just a bell curve for society in general? 30% of those 25-35 BMI and 30% for BMI 30-40 are just because that's the demographic of the UK population? It could be argued from that bell curve that it hits everyone equally? Is my thinking wrong on this? It's also a pretty low sample size at 196 people.
@williamjansen14 жыл бұрын
Your thinking seems right, but you'd have to compare with relevant age-groups and account for the gender-disparity and not just compare to the general demographic of the UK-population. And you also seem right about the low sample size.

Its a common complaint of wives and girlfriends that they cannot get their man to go to the doctor. My partner will finally go to see a GP at the level where he should be going directly to A&E. In fact, we think he had CV19 at the end of October. He was a fit 40 year old man. I knew he was really sick when he actually stayed off work for 2 days (unheard of!). He went to see the GP. By then it was too late. We were calling an ambulance less than 48 hours later. They took one look at him and scolded us for not going to A&E under our own steam (we live 5 minutes away)... UNTIL they saw his oxygen sats and checked his heart, which was going absolutely mad. He was left with permanent lung damage and is now on inhalers.

Caution on the "loss of smell" interpretation. This symptom along with others identified in the set of overlapping Covid-19 and allergy symptoms is not necessarily an indicator of Covid-19. I've experienced "loss of smell" during extremely bad allergy episodes. Right now my area is experiencing extremely high levels of tree pollen which is making me miserable. Exactly. Loss of smell is a pretty common symptom, especially if you're dealing with a disease which primarily affects the respiratory system. No scene of smell. Has me wondering, if I had more than the flu. No scene of smell has continued since March 1st. I have been in self quarantine since March 2nd. Believing this to be the flu. Not wanting to pass it on to my family. Feb 15 My seasonal allergies began with cough. This happens to me every year. BF’s mom, a retired nurse still volunteers in hospital. (that is on hold as of the 3rd week March.) Both of his parents, with whom he visits daily, were quite ill, with what they described as flu during the last week or so of February and into March, BF also developed flu symptoms during the last week of February. I visit him on weekends. I arrive late February 28th .. He did not warn me that he was having flu symptoms. Within 2 days of contact symptoms as follows….. March 1st headache, continued and increasing dry cough. March 2nd definite flu symptoms, head aches ,body aches, feeling of fever. Strangely my temp was 96.8°F for two - three days, before going up to 100.1°F. Most of the next 8 or so days are lost, to a haze of severe coughing fits that would result in vomiting. Diarrhea that necessitated the continued use of IMODIUM A-D. I also experienced extreme exhaustion, Due to sleep being constantly interrupted by cough and headache. (Self medicating with Cough Suppressants, expectorants cough drops and acetaminophen.) March 10th Flu symptoms are decreasing, then I notice my breathing is becoming more and more of an effort, thankfully I have a rescue inhaler. So I begin using that, twice a day and as needed. During this time my breathing sounds are, rough and crackly. I also develop laryngitis leaving me unable to speak. In an effort to alleviate the feeling of not getting enough air, I try to practice deep breathing, taking extra breaths at the top on inhale and trying to hold for an extra few seconds, repeating 2-3 more times, 3-6 times a day. During all this I am self medicating, for what I think is yet another bout of bronchitis. (not uncommon for me.) 1 the inhaler 2 cough suppressant liquid 3 expectorant tablets 4 Cough drops 5 acetaminophen for the headache. The last being discontinued due to recommendations, just in-case this was something other than flu combined with bronchitis. This continues until March 18th when I finally begin to notice improvements. @ around March 12th a strange thing is also occurring. Every time I have dairy, it is followed by a sour after taste. This is also when I realized, I have not been able to smell anything for the entire time. It is now March 24th I have daily improvements but am still a little under the weather, sore throat headache and easily fatigued. My voice is just starting to recover (I can whisper now). I also noticed my scene of smell beginning to return. I am remaining in isolation, due to how easily I develop bronchial issues. I have not been tested, so I don’t know if this was anything more than the flu. The first available appointment with my Dr isn’t until November. Ill ask to have my blood tested for the antibodies. For reference, I am in the north east part of the US. As far as I know, it is still not easy for the average nobody to get tested. If it turns out, that I had the virus. I hope that listing my symptoms, along with a timeline helps in some way. To everyone out there be safe, get well soon if you are under the weather, keep hope and a great big thank you to Dr John. Your updates are appreciated.

Maybe hormones. But females have two X chromosomes. A deleterious allele on one X chromosome may be compensated by a functioning allele on the other. The X chromosome has around 200 million base pairs, while the Y chromosome has only about 50 million base pairs. So only about one quarter of the deleterious alleles of male is compensated by a functioning allele on the X chromosome. (Numbers from memory.) Genetically, females are the stronger sex.

You can't possibly have a leak-proof quarantine of 7 billion people. Some number of people WILL breach the quarantine and continue spreading the virus. So it will be right there waiting for us when we come out a month later and have all wasted trillions and trillions of dollars in valuable resources such as fuel and food for nothing. Also, people will still be sick during your proposed quarantine, so they will be in hospital, necessarily spreading the virus to some non-zero number of health-care workers. Sorry, but this is the sort of plan a five year old would come up with.

Dr. Campbell: I want to know what kind of virus was going around the entire US from late Nov- early Dec.???? I had /still have it and many of my family and friends have either had it or are still feeling it. No answers from our various doctors! Symptoms included a very deep dry cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and general malaise. Some got fevers, some did not. No runny noses or cold symptoms. Several of the docs of my family members( and me) without an x-ray stated it could be pneumonia and prescribed a heavy duty antibiotic which seemed not to help anyone. The residual effects for me and 3 family members are the following: Still coughing but less, still wheezing but less; still a small amount of breathing difficulty ( my son who is very athletic does not feel ready to do his tennis and biking due to some breathing difficulties yet) , still not feeling "up[ to par" and this has lasted forever like Dec thru today, March 24th. Zinc, Loss of Smell and Taste, and Covid-19. For some people one of the early symptoms of the virus is loss of the sense of smell, which then causes loss of taste. (This is temporary, not permanent). As any nutritionist will tell you, a zinc deficiency also causes loss of smell and taste. Given that zinc is a crucial element in mounting an effective immune response, it would make sense that in the case of infection with the virus the body is directing all available zinc to fighting the infection, prioritising that over the senses. Given that not everyone loses sense of smell when they get sick, it suggests that those that do are deficient in zinc. So whilst having adequate zinc levels probably won’t protect you from catching the virus, it would be a good idea to make sure you are topped up so that your immune system has as much as it needs to mount a good defense. Good dietary sources are red meat, poultry and shellfish. Also found in pulses, nuts and legumes, however the phytates in whole grain bread, cereals and some legumes can inhibit zinc absorption. There are no body stores of zinc and daily needs are 10-15mg per day. Very high intakes (200mg/day, or prolonged intake of 50-100mg/day) can be toxic, so be sensible. UK guidelines say no more than 25mg/day. Most multivits that include minerals contain 15mg of zinc oxide, which is not the best absorbed but will probably do the trick if you’ve been taking them regularly. If you decide to buy some, zinc gluconate and zinc picolinate are well absorbed.

I think the US could get hit really hard. Aside from just being ridiculously unprepared (with as much as we spend on the military - we apparently don't have the vast stockpiles of PPE and ventilators that I had supposed we would have) and not taking appropriate action to 'flatten the curve' - there's a very high rate of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Also, I am concerned that the African American population will not fare well as they have a high rate of hypertension due to genetic factors. And then there is the ridiculously high prison population and homeless population, both of which are particularly vulnerable due to their living conditions. The recent vaping craze... I could go on and on ...

Apparently is the kitchen below that were cooking.....lasagna! I literally barged in, marched up to the cooking lasagna, and breathed in the sweet smell..😋 🥰 My smell was coming back! I went back to work a very happy camper. My bosses had a hard time suppressing their laughter. My smell did not return 100% sadly. Some days are dead, while other days I am ok. I can get sprayed buy a skunk 5 minuets before work and still go to work like nothing happened..... while my co-workers are gagging to death. Could the higher percentage of males be related to maybe a higher rate of men working, or going out of the house than women? You had said in China this appeared to be because a high percentage of men smoked, whereas women didn’t. Thanks again for this update, very interesting, specially the anosmia data.
@sudoym34844 жыл бұрын
We should get some great data on this from the Iceland study, I would think that with how crazy contagious this virus is women would be equally exposed, certainly not so under exposed to amount to less than one third of critical cases.

Love your videos, always full of great info and way ahead of the curve. I have a direct question about the BMI numbers. Are these just a representation of what the population is comprised of? Now that I'm thinking about it, might this also just represent activity that these individuals are engaged in as well? It seems far more likely that if 70% of the population is somewhat overweight that you would see that in overall numbers and that they may be eating out or at the bars. Thanks for your time and all the good work you do.

Quick question Dr. Campbell. I"m a doctor in the US and I see mostly oncology patients. The teaching hospital I work in, just sent a memo, stating that when we see patients in the clinic (not hospital), we can't wear a mask. I think this sounds like a very stupid idea, especially since my patients are mostly on chemotherapy and likely immunosuppressed. I just was wondering what you think about their request? Many thanks for all your videos on COVID-19.

You also need to take in account the average population split when comparing ages or BMI, as maybe the main reason why 71% of severe cases have high BMI is that 71% of population have high BMI for instance?

Doc, this is an epic failure at Math, depending on the age groups we are looking at about 70% of adults in the UK are considered Overweight or Obese, this means they are perfectly represented in the statistics you mention and not over represented which is what we would see if there was a correlation between obesity and COVID-19 critical care. Furthermore, the stats for Obese and Morbidly Obese also mirror incidence of such conditions on the general public. By the logic being employed by you on this video you should be advising Obese people to become Morbidly Obese immediately as that reduces the chances of them being critical down to 7.3%. You’ll need a lot better data than that to imply correlation, let alone causation between high BMI and COVID-19 complications.

Don P I think the important take away is the loss of smell as a warning sign in the absence of the other signs and symptoms. He just put up this video less than an hour ago. So yes the math is flawed and we are discussing that and making better sense of the data. Everyone is pushing data out as fast as they can because this thing is moving so fast so don’t be too critical. The last thing we want is level headed medical experts being shamed for trying to help us get a grip on this virus. I want to thank the doctor for his compassionate yet practical response. The leaders here in the states should take note.

Still, the underweight percentage is so low that they're probably all anorexic. But there are many people underweight who aren't anorexic. We have to parse the nuance from the good doctor's findings. A-fuckin-men.

The mean BMI of English aged 35 and older is right around 28-29, meaning they would split fairly evenly into either the 25-30 BMI category or the 30-40 category, the largest ones seen at 9:15. I think this means that the people in the ICU look fairly close to the population in general, meaning I don't think this proves that obesity makes you more vulnerable to severe COVID-19. These are generally the rates you'd expect to see in the ICU if the entire population were effected equally. Perhaps a better comparison would be to see if China, which has a mean BMI of 24, had an unusually large amount of obese people in their ICUs? Is there a study in regards to those who've had the pneumonia vaccine?
@fwcolb4 жыл бұрын
I have had pneumonia vaccine every 5 years for about 30 years. Protects against secondary bacterial infections. The brochure of the one I get specifically states no protection from pneumonia associated with influenza. By analogy no protection from Covid-19. The reason is explained in more than one of Dr Campbell's videos.

Overweight and obesity is just a symptom of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes type 2 diabetes, cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure, etc. It's caused by processed foods: Refined carbs + seed oils + added sugar (Even if you never eat donuts, all processed foods pretty much are like donuts, even if it says it's a healthy food) If you want to lose weight and improve your health all you need to do is eat low carb high fat. It costs nothing. No need for supplements, just eat vegetables, meat and animal fat.

9:50 No, it does not indicate that low weight is in any way related to lower chance of getting the disease. It just says that fewer people are underweight. According to your conclusion, you should be suggesting people to get morbidly obese because 7.3% (morbidly obese) is better than 27.7% (normal weight)
