Sagnik Mukherjee, mixing medical stuff and spiral power, well yeah. His cells probably got a ton of spiral energy then, got faster/stronger in that moment. Ofc from the blood lost there weren’t many. But spiral power pushed his body to get oxygen faster. Same in the movie where simons blood surrounded him and turned into a drill to kill anti-spiral.

This came out in 2007. I was 11. Things were simpler, and I simply adored mech animes for the action packed storylines. Today I'm 25. Everything is different, life's slapped a couple of bricks on my face and I suddenly remembered this anime fondly. I rewatched the entire thing and goddamn. It just HITS DIFFERENT. Kamina was so on point. He was the light and inspiration of many characters in the series and his essence outlasted his own lifespan. When I reached this scene I was in tears. He felt like a brother giving advice to someone down in the dumps, no longer sure of himself. Absolutely beautiful.

I think what makes this death so jarring compared to others later on is that, it really felt like it wasn't meant to happen. All the characters felt just as shocked as us, including Kamina himself, who probably didn't realize he would die a premature and sudden death until after he was hit. It felt like even the writers didn't know it was going to happen and that made it so much more impactful than other anime deaths.

When I first started watching this, the usual norm for main characters in anime is that in fights, they’d either survive from miraculous wounds or the psyche out trope would be used where it looks like they get killed only to be revealed they were hurt really bad and healing . But no, not Gurren Lagann. They made us fall in love with the character of Kamina and then kill him off by episode _eight_ . When this show first aired, this was unheard of at the time - I still remember the shock I felt when I first saw it happen. Yes, his death was necessary to advance the story and the character arc of Simon (especially with him becoming the leader and the hero Kamina always saw him as) and to also show that the war they were fighting was always going to have casualties (if it was anyone else, it wouldn’t have mattered) but damnit, it never makes it hurt any less. And the absolutely crazy part? The very next episode, Kamina's replaced in the opening credits.
