WATCH FULL SCREEN!
Losses is a short film Written/Directed/Shot/Edited by Film Riot's Ryan Connolly ( / ryan_connolly . Shot for less than $200 in an extremely short amount of time, with only friends and family volunteering to help out as the crew! Losses is an exercise in how professional a project can be with as little resources as possible.
The one major advantage the production had was the Red Epic to shoot with, which was loaned to us by the awesome Eric Kessler of Kessler Crane! (www.kesslercrane.com)
Starring:
Josh Connolly / josh_connolly
Todd Bruno / todd_bruno
VFX by
Michael Stark / mstarktv

It's disgusting how many negative comments there are on this video. This whole things was "Shot for less than $200 in an extremely short amount of time, with only friends and family volunteering to help out as the crew" You little fuck fucks don't realise how difficult it is to achieve something like this. Kudos to Ry Ry and the team for not getting overwhelmed by the shitstorm of youtube viewers. It's a great short film no matter what flaws it may have. Far better than many indie filmmakers could do, no matter their success. It takes real creativity and intuition to make something as good as this from the circumstances they were in.

Having recently gotten into creating short films, I heartily agree. Most of you people have no idea how much work goes into creating a film that's a mere fraction as good as this. This was created on a meager budget of 200 dollars, an amount that goes almost nowhere in the world of filmmaking. This creation is amazing for what it is. It's not a feature film. It's a KZbin action short. And a pretty darn good one at that.

LightStorm yes this truly is a really good film(for the most part) and I havent read many comments but here is my opinion. If you make short films you should want feedback on it. As long as the people are being constructive and arent saying, "you're shit at filmmaking" then i dont see a problem. If I had made something like this I would want to know what people thought of it, the good and the bad. we shouldnt be telling the people that this short film was perfect if it wasnt. So in short, If you're nice with your criticism, then I dont see a problem with it.

I was amazed at how the shaky camera didn't irritate or interfere. It was the most graceful shaky camera of all time. Editing was outstanding and the concept was good. The directing was also pretty strong as I'm assuming Ryan dealt with non actors. I loved the lighting and the cinematography. And all for less than 200. Very nice!!!!

indeed, film riot is becoming one of my biggest pushes toward the film industry. after watching this short it has given me a little more light to shed upon my darkened computer desk so that i can prop my arse down and get to writing that set of scripts and see about production in the near future. luckily i have friends recently graduated from film school, as i am a film lover and appreciater trying to get into this with no more then a want and dream, these guys at film riot just teach me new things every time a video comes out... thanks ryan and josh.

The Film Riot videos have taught me so much, but I can't wait till they go away and we're watching Josh and Ryan's latest big screen releases at the movie theater. Talking about how they used to do DIY videos. Hats off to you and your team Ryan, and thanks for giving our community so many tools to follow our dreams of film.

For such a short amount of time and budget , ryan did great , everyone is complaining that the cameras too shakey or the story is to open to the viewer , thats how ryan wanted it to be , plus this wasnt supposed to be a full project , they had very little time to film with the red , and the shakey cam is a technique , but i do understand , even ryan said the lens didnt have a stabilizer so the shots came out jittery , but all in all they did an amazing job ! Everyone just enjoy the film !!

***** Shakes hit too much for my eyes(it was great at start and in fight scenes, but conversion and build ups didnt need it that much) and the fight scene had little bit too much cuts for my taste, but other vise great movie every other way. Its odd as i usually find way more fails/problems in big production movies. Just personal taste, but if that is what Ryan was looking for the ok.

Okay, this is definitely not Ryan's best stuff, but I just gotta comment, that for what he had available, I think he did a good job. And for all you filmmakers out there know that on a tight budget, limited time and actors, and standard editing software that many things can go wrong. In most of my films I've done (which are trash for the most part) everything I expected to go wrong, 80% percent of the time it did. There's no right or wrong way to do something in art. There are sorta 'rules' but you can bend them. I say, if u learned something from ur experience, than it's not a failure. "The best thing is to succeed, the next best thing is to fail, and the worst thing u could possibly do is nothing." *D4 Darius who heard it from some other guy* My point is (and it's long) that Thomas Edison (who sorta invented the lightbulb) said that he didn't fail, he just found a couple hundred ways not to do something. That is my comment

To clear up the handheld vs shaky dilemma: This was intended as handheld as said by Ryan. It's supposed to look shaky however they didn't have lens stabilization or the proper rigs for SOME of these scenes which caused the shakiness it to look jittery. Ryan also noticed this and has said that he thinks it's a shame but he can't do anything about it anymore. Happy now?
@RYSEproductions
@RYSEproductions 8 жыл бұрын
+RYSE Also here's a quick tip for fellow filmmakers out there to solve that problem in post: Throw on warp stabilizer, don't touch the settings other than smoothness (2%) and cropp less, smoothe more (also 2%) your shot will still be shaky/handheld looking, but the jitter will be gone.

LukaANDkrusty Right, there's a huge difference. Shame that some people don't get that. I prefer to shoot my films handheld, with a minimum amount of shakiness, and still there's a few people who call the cinematography "shaky cam". The critique comes from people who know absolute zero about filmmaking, but still, it's annoying to hear.

@BackyardPix
@BackyardPix 8 жыл бұрын
AustinTheWeird123 Man, was a long time since I saw those films. But if I remember correctly, the first one had kinda ordinary handheld cinematography, while the sequels had a lot of shaky cam going on.
@AustinThomasFilms
@AustinThomasFilms 8 жыл бұрын
EuroTrasho Productions Alright. Well the reason I'm asking is because a few of those fight scenes tend to be extremely shaky, but those movies are very handheld in general. So the two seem to go hand in hand most of the time, even though not every "handheld" film goes crazy with it.
@ChefMattReviews
@ChefMattReviews 8 жыл бұрын
LukaANDkrusty I prefer steady wide shots of the action, kinda like what they did in a lot of kung fu films like "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" "The Matrix" and let's not forget the slew of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films like "Enter the Dragon" and "Legend of the Drunken Master." All of which have smooth, wide shot of the action taking place and it all looks beautiful. I do agree that handheld, if done right, can look amazing. Just look at a couple Spielberg films like "Saving Private Ryan" and another director who uses handheld cam well is Michael Mann, 2 of his films used handheld cam incredibly. Those films being "Heat" and "Collateral" Still I prefer wide shots over close and quick cuts of action. To me it's more thematic.

If everybody said 'This is amazing! Awesomest film ever!' and left it at that, Ryan and his team would miss out on half of the learning process. Great feedback is great, but it's the criticism that teaches us, about both the audience and the overall look and feel that our films generate. Personally, I absolutely love this film, but my constructive feedback would be the sound design. Only at one very specific moment (3:52) the guns sounded very similar had the same level of audio, despite being varying distances from the camera. Also, the sound pulling out of the neck stab (6:15) didn't sound right. Not sure what it was... maybe it could have been quieter, or a bit fuller... but none the less. Even with these, the film blew me away and I loved it! And in response to those bashing the negative feedback, there's a huge difference between constructive criticism and pure film-hate.

You could tell this was one of Connolly's earlier films, it needed a lot of tightening up in the editing room. Too many shots that could've slashed a couple frames and added to the pacing. Script was also pretty cliche, but I managed to get through it ok. Not bad, but definitely shows signs of an early attempt

If you know anything about filmmaking, you would know that a shaky camera, represents that things are not well, that things are intense and things are "going down" in Lehmens terms. So the shaky camera is a necessity to show what is going on in the shot. Imagine a fight scene, where the camera was still the whole time. Sounds like something you might see in a scene where two brothers are play wrestling instead of fighting. So the shaky cam? Yeah its needed.

Joshua Walker no shit sherlock but if you knew anything about filmmaking you would realize that you should actually be able to see what the fuck is going on not just a shit show going all over the screen. you could not see a single thing is this damn video during their shitty shaky cam. shaky cam done well shakes a little not like spazzing out shaky cam on crack like this video's.
@Joshwalkertv
@Joshwalkertv 9 жыл бұрын
Well I honestly could see what was going on. I'm not sure what you saw. That was lesson one in filmmaking was shaky cam like this was good for fight scenes.

Joshua Walker yeah a GOOD shaky cam can really add to the movie but he shook the camera so much in this video i have no clue how you saw what was happening. probably cuz you didn't. you assumed that he was punching or something but this shaky cam is terrible.

You really need to make another episode if this. I would watch it. The lead character has an intensity that I haven't seen in a short film in a long time. The "bad" guy was a really good actor...I would've liked to see more of him.

First - kudos for putting this together. For what it was, it was fantastic. But, the filming of the fight scenes are really a replication of everything that is wrong with contemporary action; super-fast cuts with jitter and shake to hide weaknesses in the skills of the actor(s). I also had absolutely no investment in the main character, but that might have been a tall order in a short (but not impossible). The film was good for what it was; a lesson in making action scenes. I personally like wide shots of fights to see what is happening. If you're going to have two people fight, they both have to know how to fight. Don't rely on the director to fool the audience into believing they know how.

BikeMontreal The reason they (and modern hollywood films) do that is because they're using actors, not professional high-paid stuntmen. If they showed the whole fight in a single wide shot it would look stupid and fake. Not every film can be as good as The Raid or Oldboy.

***** The Matrix didn't have a bunch of Kung-fu fighters in it, the wide shots of the fight between Neo and Mr. forgettable Name where somewhat spectacular. Look at Fury Road for good fight scenes that don't rely on shaky cam. It's about finding actors that can learn the choreography and sell the fight. Fighting is an integral part of the acting craft that goes back to Shakespeare. This has nothing to do with actors as much as directors feeling this is the way of imparting the feeling of confusion in the fight. It's a fad that I can't wait to see disappear.

***** And I'm not arguing for single shot scenes. Just not shaky or unnecessary camera movement.
@xCrazyxJayx

BikeMontreal Fury Road and The Matrix also had over $100 Million dollar budgets. And both of those movies had renowned stuntmen and fight choreographers off camera. The Matrix fights were largely improved with CGI. None of those things are the case in a 4-day no-budget film like Losses, you're just proving my point.

My point being that replicating a good fight scene through shaky cam and hand-held movement is terrible, at any level. The only movie that ever did it well was Borne Ultimatum.

Zach Ramirez This simply being an action film doesn't warent the shake, it's a symbolism for intensity. The camera is our persective and I'm sure most of us would be shaking in this situation. Also. It creates a sense of urgency and a need to keep moving to stay alive.
