This in my opinion is the episode when Lost took it to the next level. The run from here through end of season 5 was amazing. And it's when Desmond became one of my favorite characters together with Ben and Locke.

@@apple54345 Yeah, I'm not so hot on the filler episodes in Season 3 but the mythology episodes, which are the ones I tend to rewatch, are top notch and I l mythology narrative got a lot tighter after Not In Portland and this episode but especially in season 4 and 5, which is what I appreciated a whole lot.

"You're gonna die, Charlie" That line stuck with me over the years even more than the famous one in this season's finale. Watched it with my family as it aired. When I told them I was watching it again (just like two or three years ago) in order to show my wife, the first reference my step-dad made was "you're gonna die, Charlie."

I'm not sure if this connects to any future episodes because I haven't watched lost since it came out. But this makes me think about Is the end of last season when those people called to tell penny about the electro magnetic energy signature. I'm wondering if maybe at some point Desmond either either got her to believe him or she finally decided he was telling the truth. There's some reason that she knew to look for that because Desmond knew it was going to happen so that she could find him or look for him as it seems that she's doing.

You don’t get too much info on it tbh, - season 2’s finale, she has her meeting with him at the stadium where he tells her what he plans to do regards sailing - season 2’s finale, she gets a call about the detection of an electromagnetic event - later in season 3, Naomi has a photo of Desmond and Penny that she was given by her employer who she falsely implies is Penny - season 3’s finale, Penny has been looking for Desmond and trying to call through to the island - season 4, it’s revealed that they’ve been blocking her calls on the freighter - season 4’s the constant, she reveals that she knows about the island - season 4, she rescues them on the boat It’s not really explained and you’re left to kind of piece together that she was looking into what happened to Desmond after he disappeared and somehow stumbled upon her father’s research into the location of the island (eg. another Desmond episode where we see that Charles is at auction winning the journal of Magnus Hanso who captained the black rock). The second half of the series is a lot tighter and doesn’t introduce any new ideas that aren’t clearly resolved by the end of the series, some of the earlier elements of the first 2-3 seasons (penny’s final scene in season 2, Alvar Hanso and the benefactors of Dharma, Libby’s backstory, etc) weren’t further explored for various reasons (cast changes, writers’ strike) - though like the Penny explanation above, Libby is another case of piecing it together with her husband having died, having consequently suffered a mental breakdown, her husband ‘David’ that may or may not be Hurley’s imaginary friend, ‘Dave’ (otherwise a vision of a dead person that MIB later poses as on-island to convince Hurley to throw himself off of the cliff), etc

Instead of focusing on more important characters like Nikki and Paulo, this episode chose to focus on Desmond of all characters. As if anyone even cares about him, not like he will have any big impact on later seasons.

Same Eric, about it not making sense for Charlie to call Desmond a coward in a writing sense. It feels like the only purpose in that is thematic. I imagine maybe the only way that makes sense is maybe from deleted dialogue. Maybe while drunk Desmond told Charlie and Hurley about how(minor future episode Desmond spoiler) he committed desertion in the army(in The Constant, which led to him being in prison in Live Together Die Alone). Or maybe he doesn't realize Desmond saved him by turning the hatch key instead of helping him with Eko. Otherwise Charlie hasn't seen Des exhibit any cowardice behavior. I don't blame Charlie for this, just the writers for needing a character to call him a coward so the present ties in with the "flashback". It's funny how the future spoilers answer to why the jewel store woman knows everything that Desmond does is quite a long story, one we could never have guessed.

Desmond's episodes always feel different for me, like I'm watching the protagonist of a movie. With everyone else, it's always like watching the part of something whole but with Desmond... something just feels different.
