Hi Erin.. Thank you so much for introducing me to a new hobby that is not only helping me with my giving up smoking but has solved the problem of what I can do with all my deceased husband's T-shirts.. I'm keeping my favorites and turning the rest into rugs for myself and our children so we can treasure a part of him for ever... I only started last night and I can't put it down..

That's is wonderful. So sorry for the loss of your husband. I suggest you watch my 5 strand rectangle braid-in rag rug tutorial. It shows more close ups and details about adding extra stitches as you go around the curves. Please stay healthy and safe. Enjoy the creative rag rug process 😉.

I too am looking forward to starting my first project and reading the comments/questions to see if others have asked a few of the questions whirling around in my head…and I came upon your comment. I hope you were able to complete your memorial t-shirt yarn braided rugs…I thought your idea of using your husband’s t-shirts was not only a fantastic way to use those T-shirts you didn’t need to keep intact, a unique way to creatively keep a memory and share with your children as well. If your husband liked his t-shirts, I have no doubt he was thrilled you not only kept the favourites but kept and used the others as well! I think this craft would be very therapeutic. You kept a little bit of him around in a different form just like he is still around you but again just in a different way. If you see this message, I hope you continued on your healing and crafting journey. Hugs to you. ❤

My aunt made a braided rug out of my dad’s, my uncle’s and cousins’ wool shirts. She created a beautiful living room rug. I believe one of my cousins still owns it. It is probably 80 years old now. I am so glad to have found your channel. I’ve been thinking about creating some braided rugs.

Believe it or not I just went around my first corner and it actually wasn't too hard and I am going down the other side. So happy to have another hobby that I haven't spent any money on yet. I already had a tapestry needle that was given to me in with someone else's sewing tools, gobs of material that was donated to me from a deceased sister in law, and plenty of safety pins which are working really well. So much fun to choose colors and looking forward to seeing how it turns out. You are a blessing!! Janice from Arkansas USA.

Erin, I love your video! I've been watching so many weaving- and rug-making videos over the last few days and regardless of the content, you really stood out as someone who gets right down to business from the beginning. You talk properly too, without the usual "um"-ing and "uhhhhh"-ing of people trying to remember the name of the very thing that the video is about. Thank you for making a tutorial that doesn't irritate us horrible, impatient people. It's just nice and I think you're lovely and I like this braiding technique, I wish you millions of views.

You are lovely for writing me such a kind note. My KZbin channel is dedicated to rag rug videos. I have 56 videos at present and hope to have my latest rug video uploaded in the next 2 or 3 weeks. If you go to my channel and click on my playlist it makes navigating my channel a little easier. I started with just one video to help others. The questions kept coming so I continued to make videos. Have a good evening and good luck with you rag rug project.

Beautiful old world technique. If not for artisans like you, these precious art forms would become obsolete and lost forever. I remember, Mom made rugs like this from old curtains, sheets, leftovers in the quilt bag but never paid attention to what she was doing. Thanks to you I have made a re-connect with one of my deceased Mom's passions. I was too busy to notice the love Mom put into our home as a child, but now with a daughter of my own, I'm thinking about a new way of spending our quality time passing on a passion from Mom to her, thanks to your help. So beautiful Erin. We, My oldest brother & I loved to visit Our Neighbors & Relatives. One day we stopped by an Older Lady's Home and she was enjoying herself braiding 3 strips of torn rags together. Then she'd sew the braid (onto wrong side) to an oval rug she'd already started. She got us set up to make our own rug right there! She let us take our newly-learned projects with us when we left. Thank you for your videos. Made total sense to me and I have a nice rug to show for it. Not sure if I'm going to tackle the 6 ft x 8 ft rug I'd like to or not. At least I know I can do it. :-)

Now I'm starting to remember Mom teaching me how to do this. She made them. I may have learned it in the Girl Scouts as well. But, Mom always had something to sew or creat with textiles. She was a fine artist at her work really. I'm so proud of that.

She made most hers that I remember, oval shaped.

Oh okay, this makes multiple times I've watched but it had been awhile and I popped out to mention the shape but yours is pretty oval too. It's pretty as can be by the way, haha, you keep apologizing for it. Rem; You have to break eggs to make it omelette!

Thank you Erin for taking the time to teach this technique! I've been looking for something to make to put on chairs & ran across this. I don't know if I could modify it to be round. If nothing else I will have a neat rug. :0)

Heidi S. Heidi, It is my pleasure. I think you could just make the initial braid very short. It would make the rug almost round. You might want to consider watching my videos "Learn the Formula to Make a Circle Rag Rug Part 1 and 2". You could use the T-shirts for that rug as well just do not overdo with the tension. I would enjoying hearing what you come up with. Take care!!

Great job 👍 love it! I'm going to give it a try. I suppose you could use a clamp on your table to help hold it in place🤷

I’m going to DEFINATELY give this a try. Your instruction is VERY good. I like how you say “it’s going to look messy”. You never say “oh it’s so easy”. It all true. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m wondering if it can be done with yarn? I guess I’ll know when I try it.

Make sure you add enough extra stitches as you go around the curves. I appreciate your comments. It helps me make better videos. 😉🙋

This is a great project. I love the thought of being able to make something from back in history like quilts. I have been interested in rag rugs but didn't think about checking out You Tube tutorials. Old books only showed the rugs where you have to hand stitch the braids together and I can't afford a new one.. I look forward to your videos and am anxious to try one. Have you ever thought of cutting your sheets on the bias? They might have enough stretch to be able to use. Thanks, Memee (My son is the coffee addict.)
@RagRugsbyErin8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Hoerle (CoffeeAddict) Yes, Several people have made that suggestion. I am working on a different type of braid in rug at present and I am not have a problem with the sheets in this one. Most of my rugs are crocheted. Thank you for viewing and I hope you get a chance to give it a whirl. Enjoy your your weekend!!

Thanks for the video, I do need to go back to part one, but I have been saving fabric -old sheets- to do one of these. I did crochet a rug from old sheets a couple years ago. Kind of made it up as I went because I only know the basic stitch in crocheting but knew the look I wanted. I started the project because I wanted a braided run but couldn't figure it out after I started braiding!...

By the way, using your sewing machine to hold the end while starting a new rug is very handy. Just slide the end you just stitched under the pressor foot and drop it onto the end and then braid away. ;^)
