I am so glad Gilnockie has been rebuilt and restored. Sad others weren't saved. Network of Reivers....

I stayed for a weekend in Fernihirst Castle when I was in Primary 7, the guide for the weekend told us that they claim the first ever football match where they played with someones head as the ball. don't know if it's true but it made a good story at the log fire. There's also a tree nearby held up by chains, supposed to be a curse on the Kerr's if it falls down.

Obi don ha ha could be true in this area. There are a couple of really ancient trees in the area, the most famous is the Capon tree, used to hang many a Reiver in days gone by.

What book my bro? That's my old families land!!! Thanks for this! Your my scot bro and I will soon meet ya. You don't know how this makes me feel! :) That have been destroyed due to them rebelling against the tyrants. They killed innocent folks and the land became cursed. I've read ancient text saying that every battle ground becomes cursed once blood is spilt on it.

Herbert Norman cheers man! If you were to get speaking to the farmer at Dolphiston I reckon they would be able to tell us a lot more. Did you see the outline of the tower from the aerial shots? It’s strange that they have built something inside it? Think that big lintel will be up there in those farm buildings somewhere.

Mark Nicol Who knows. I'd like to dig a bit around it hahah Yeah I saw the outline of the castle. I wonder if i could reclaim it?

Nice one Mark. So much Reiver history neglected by it's stewards. Try finding the Armstrong's Bastle House some time. Reputed to have been the largest of it's kind in the Borders, but it was torn down late in the last century to get at the Roman Mile Fort archaeology beneath it. Gone forever. So madding.

Randy Raz Ullon cheers Randy!! I’ll need to have a look for that one. Thinking of doing a similar film in Liddesdale soon.

@@MarkNicol123 I went to see it not knowing it had been torn down back in the early 2000s. It's shown on the Reiver Map that I believe is now out of print, at least that's how I found the location. I poked around the mile fort for a while looking for it but gave up and asked at the history interpretation center (gift shop) on the site, that's when they told me they'd raised the building to recover the roman fort blocks it was made from and to get at the ground under it. Cheers. Happy hunting.

I imagine they topped the stone from the castle down over top of the passageway, but if carved out of living rock, it would still exist, even if filled in, ground penetrating sonar should be able to find it, did you try to google it?
@MarkNicol1235 жыл бұрын
LinnTractorNut hardly find anything on line about these sites. You’re right though I reckon it will be there still ....somewhere near that site.

sad there was not more left , did a good job of demolishing them , i read a story about an old tunnel in kilwinning ayrshire that was never found but there was a pond nearby and workmen were doing some work and all the water disappeared
