Rarely seen archival footage accompanies memories and accounts of forgotten Palestinian cities - highlighting the catastrophic effect the creation of Israel in 1948 had on them.
Haifa, Nazareth, and Jaffa have all been overshadowed by Tel Aviv, but in their day each of the Palestinian cities had magnificent commercial and cultural ability.
"Palestinians born after 1948 don't realise what they have missed," says writer Raef Zreik.
"We only realise what we've lost when we hear people's stories about Palestine before 1948. People who spent the night at to clubs and movies in Haifa, who spent the night there and the next day took taxis from Al-Hanateer Square to go back home at the American University in Beirut. You could do what you liked. We not only lost our cities in 1948, but also our open relationship with the Arab world."
Made for Al Jazeera Arabic in 2011, Lost Cities of Palestine provides a rare opportunity to see Palestine as it was in the 30s and 40s and learn about the everyday life and culture of urban Palestine before 1948.

@@imhere8380 The Palestinian Arabs have not been on the land for the last 15,000 years. The Arabs first came in the late 600’s, but even then there was no specific “Palestinian” Arab culture. The population ebbed and flowed for the next few centuries until it became a stagnant 200,000 of Jews and Arabs. In the early 1800’s, under Ottoman rule, more Jews began to return which added to the population of Jews who had never left. The Arabs in the region had always seen themselves as Arabs, not Palestinians Arabs because the Arab world was very fluid with no hard borders and no passports needed. The question is when did Palestinian Arab culture start. They didn’t declare themselves a people until the 1960’s under Arafat.
@sandrad9695

@@imhere8380 And the DNA doesn’t show any of this. All the DNA shows is that the Palestinian Arabs share some DNA with the early Canaanites, but everyone in the Middle East shares DNA with the early Canaanites. The Syrians share the most and this makes sense with the Palestinian Arab connection because tens of thousands of Syrians came to Palestine for work. Thousands came during WW1 and even more came after the war and during the Mandate to work for the British. In fact, when Jews began to return in large number during the mid-1800’s, they started businesses that needed workers, and people from all over the Middle East began to come, from Egypt, Iraq, and Syria. So the fact that Palestinian Arabs share DNA with ancient Canaanites doesn’t prove anything except that they are no different than the other people in the Middle East. And it makes sense when you know that so many came from Syria.

I REALLY like many topics & much content you provide. It's frustrating, however, to end up needing to read the whole story vs simply listen. I imagine there's plenty of Aljazeera staffers that could translate so it wouldn't be some massive extra cost.. We like to watch these documentary topics while working on things; which is impossible without verbal translation. Given it's Aljazeera English, I didn't really anticipate so much content not translated to English. Unsure of any ethical contraindications, so perhaps you can consider it. Until then, we'll just have to catch things when we can be glued to the screen. Please keep the great content coming, either way! Many topics & areas you cover are totally foreign to us.. when Zionism started in the 19th century Israel was very thinly populated. With the Alijahs of Jews and Germans it became populated and the land was beginning to become a frutiful place, so that also more arabs from the neighbour countries settled over to Israel. Therefore even arabs followed the sentence: "land without people for a people without land,"

Do you mean arabs or palestinian people? If you call the people of a land palestinians, there are logically such people there. But who lived there? Jews and Arabs. Therefore it is not necessary to speak of a proof of palestinian people Living there. Nobody ever doubted this. The point is that the arabs started to call themselves palestinians not before 1967, when they lost the "Westbank". Before the arabs called themselves arabs. Why? Because there was not such a state "Palestine". Palestine was just a region called so. From who? From Europeans, since the times of the Romans, who were also Europeans. The word "Palestine" is from Europeans and since many Jews lived in Europe, even the Jews called this land Palestine, long before the arabs started with it.

Of course bad things happened and injust have been done to Palestinians, but the palestinan life and culture hasn't been wiped out. There are many examples of a peaceful co-existence and cultural exchange. (Best example is the Karmiel dance festival, where every year jewish and arab dance groups perform their wonderful dances). Nazareth is still an arab town, Jaffa is still in majority arab and in Haifa are still many arabs /Palestinians. Both sides have to overcome the hurt and anger from the past. I read comments here, like "there was never a place called Palestine. King Richard was only setting sail for a magical place called Palestine in the 12th century which just happened to be....He must have entered an alternate dimension when reaching the shores of modern day Gaza and Israel to go into a new dimension which must have been called Palestine, that must have been it!" I simply like the way he goes from a clear decision (never a place called...) to a "magical place" called so by RICHARD, then "he MUST HAVE.....which MUST HAVE been... that MUST HAVE been it!". Maybe simply accidentally, Herodotus (who lived longer before the 12th century, 485-425 BC), which i bet King Richard himself had no idea about, called the land Palestine too. And i am sure he didnt choose a name from 2400 years in his future just to upset the zionists.

The land of Israel was named Judea and Israel .The land of Israel was named Judea until 132 CE, Hadrian joined the province of Judaea with Galilee and the Paralia to form new province of Syria Palaestina, and Jerusalem was renamed "Aelia Capitolina. He named it palastina after the Hebrew Pelesheth. The term "Peleset" (transliterated from hieroglyphs as P-r-s-t) is found in five inscriptions referring to a neighboring people or land starting from c. 1150 BCE during the Twentieth dynasty of Egypt. The land of Israel was named Judea until 132 CE, when the roman king Hadrian joined the province of Judaea with Galilee and the Paralia to form new province of Syria Palaestina, and Jerusalem was renamed "Aelia Capitolina" long after king Herods. Hadrian called it Palestine after the sworn enemy of the Israelites. The Philistines who were an ancient people who came from the island of Crete and lived on the south coast of Canaan between the 12th century BC and 604 BC until they were exiled to Mesopotamia by King Nebuchadnezzar II. They are known for their biblical conflict with the Israelites. They were called Peleset, "invaders" in Hebrew.

Also, these claims like palestinians look like our middle-class and they were not developed before israelis came....are ridiculous, if u judge the rights of someone according to this. (Thats what colonists were doing, without any obvious interest, just generosity). I also read bellow somewhere that "palestinians lost their homes and possessions, but they didnt lose their lives, culture, recognition". I wonder if palestinians who remained in israel have a national museum and where their history starts from in the school manuals. I believe that most of people who speak this way never tried an accupation on their own skin. I heard that the other territories (Gaza, West Bank) r occupied too, i mean having israeli civilians living in. And many ROADS r prohibited to palestinians, this is just one aspect.

So much for the " land without people for a people without land" bullshit myth. The major difference between the dispossessed native populations of the Americas and Australasia and the Palestinian Arabs, is that the Palestinians were an urbanised people rather than hunter-gatherers. The second major difference is that the Palestinians had other fellow Arabs around them who provided them with some support (however qualified and divided) for their struggle against the neo-colonialist interlopers, and kept their cause alive in the international arena. I have always maintained that the Zionist-created state of Israel is the Frankenstein's monster created out of the corpse of Palestinian Arab independence, which was a real possibility until the Balfour Declaration caused it to be stillborn.

The "Land without people for a people without a land" slogan was only used in the very, very early days of the Zionist movement. I wish you would retire that exaggerated argument. There were Zionists who tried to come to an agreement with the Arabs, but in the face of hard-core opposition from the Mufti and his followers, it was hard to do so.

What are you talking about ? This video is spot on, you heard the man in who has been living there for over 80 years. What do you know ? There's no such thing as an Arab Israeli. You're either an Arab whose family lived there for centuries (Palestinian), a Jew whose family lived there for centuries (also a Palestinian) or Zionist colonizer. So which one are you? Where is your family actually from? Al Jazeera is one of the most esteemed news sources in the whole entire developed and under-developed world so don't spread libel about an organization that actuallly provides non bias factual based media. I'm from Dana Point in Orange County, California and know more about the place where you live and pretend to be from then you do. Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself, do I perpetuate lies so I can go on living my comfortable existence which I know has costed others their human rights to exist and have an identity and a culture or am I good person who states the truth about my easy life, and I know that the only way it was afforded to me was thru the blood and sacrifice of others who weren't even willing participants but so generously gave up their culture so u can create one and call hummus your food and Jerusalem your hometown.

@@jordantiffany2720you should get factual, dude, not emotional ! 🤣 Also develop a critical mindset - al Jazeera is totally biased to any Arab viewpoint. Arabs never really left Arabia and just colonised from there. Read the words of Zuheir Mohsen of the PLO: "The Palestinian people does not exist … there is no differences between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese", though Palestinian identity would be emphasised for political reasons. In a March 1977 interview with the Dutch newspaper Trouw he stated that "between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese there are no differences. We are all part of one people, the Arab nation [...] Just for political reasons we carefully underwrite our Palestinian identity. Because it is of national interest for the Arabs to advocate the existence of Palestinians to balance Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity exists only for tactical reasons".
