The first time Eko encountered the smoke, he thought he needed forgiveness. In this scene, he finally accepts himself and the things he's done. He's proud of his life and he doesn't want the island's redemption. That's why the smoke killed him this time. Eko was an extremely significant character. Because unlike the others, he basically said, "screw you island, i know what's right." i hate when people say he had more story, because he didn't. He made his peace, and thats what i love about it.

Yes. MIB is looking for a loophole, and since he believes every man is corruptible and bad by nature, he is looking for a good person (Loophole) in order to kill Jacob and leave the island. Good people are easy to manipulate because they are naive. Eko did not regret about what he did, so he is expendable. He is not the right person for MIB's purposes. Locke is the Loophole.

Eko figured out the true power of the Island, when he was at the creek drinking, after the polar bear attack. The power is in the water, notice he’s healed by drinking and applying it to his wounds. Then MiB shows up, Eko is about to confront MiB, then Locke interrupts, in true Lost fashion. Sawyer was healed by the water also when he was shot and captured by the tail section survivors. But he’s too busy flirting, to notice.

No doubt, his role was really good, Terry O Quinn and Matthew Fox were also stupendous but Adewale was the character that made the most impact on myself in such a short time, to imagine such a life, such a conviction to do the right thing, such a mix of a big strong guy with a kid still missing his childhood and his younger brother, Mr. Eko had one of the strongest backgrounds, had to deal with death a lot more times than everybody else. This is all coming from someone who is atheist, but his conviction is something I gotta respect, he summarised it all in the best way, he didn’t had a good life but he made the best to do good, the perfect example of a good person going bad and walking out before is too late to finally fix the bad he did. RIP Mr Eko

This scene was a GIANT hint to the rest of the show. It's the first time that a character talks to MIB in a way other than the person he appears to be, Eko tells Locke "he's next" in reference to him later being a disguise of the MIB, and finally, and what I think to be the biggest hint, is Eko in the flashback with Yemi representing the final scene of the show in the church. Eko wasn't in the church because he had already "moved on" with Yemi in this scene, as he was the person that had the biggest impact on his life. It's crazy to watch these a second time because I always wonder how the heck I didn't manage to catch on to it all.

@@Dellen-Roger In what Eko said. Think of it like this: by the time Locke, Sayid, Desmond and the others got to Eko, the Smoke Monster was long gone. In other words, no one else saw it, therefore no one knew what caused Eko’s death. If Locke had told them what Eko actually said (“I saw the Devil”), they probably wouldve been more frightened because they knew Eko was a man of faith, so for them to find him mortally wounded and him to say something like that, it wouldve made them wonder what exactly is on this island.

If Locke told them the truth about what Eko said, it wouldve put some serious thought into what exactly could be on the island. Eko was a man of faith. He would never lie about anything like that, especially because he was always repenting for his past mistakes and he wanted to become a better person. Locke lied on purpose. Why? Eko was killed because the island did not change him (he did not embrace his new life and refused to confess his sins in the scene before this). As Jacob said to the four remaining candidates in the penultimate episode, they needed the island more than it needed them. See Jacob's touch as Christian baptism. If you do not actually renounce your sins in your heart, it means that Jacob's touch/blessing no longer works (you can lose your status as an adopted child, which is what baptism symbolises), and so you are no longer adopted by Jacob. Hence the Smoke Monster (Man in Black) can take you (in this case, Eko). MIB was testing whether Eko was changed by the island and realized that Eko wasn't and hence isn't enduringly protected by Jacob's touch.

Honestly after rewatching this scene with the knowledge of what the smoke monster really is I think that Eko was killed exactly BECAUSE he had changed so much that he was the most likely canditate to replace Jacob. It's not that Eko didn't change. It's just that he doesn't regret the path that lead him there which is actually quite admirable. Yes he did evil things but he started that life to spare his brother the same fate and in the end it lead him to a place (the island) where he could finally let go of that criminal lifestyle that he himself hated and seek for atonement. I truly think Eko at this point would've been the perfect choice as guardian. And because of that, Smokey killed him whereas when they first came face to face, Smokey still couldn't decide if that guy was a threat to his plans or if he could perhaps turn him to the dark side since Eko clearly had that in him too.

***** I don't understand.. how can Smokey kill candidates who are likely to replace Jacob? In Ab Aeterno, Jacob wanted people he brought to the Island to know the difference between "right and wrong" while everything starts anew for them on the Island. So my sense is that if Smokey tests/discovers a candidate who doesn't know that difference and hence is less likely to replace Jacob, the rule could be that he could kill him/her. And knowing that difference is pretty straightforward in Lost - you do something grander, find yourself, etc coz of the island and the place you are in. Instead Eko was stubborn. (I'm not judging whether Eko became better because in my personal everyday life bias, he became better or saw himself and his past actions more clearly, but it seems that the Island has rules that becoming better is fairly straightforward, i.e. one becomes better when they find their bigger purpose on the island, such as Jack saying "this is what I'm supposed to do" or Sawyer maturing for Juliet and settling for a while. If a candidate doesn't need the Island, i.e. Jacob to Kate - "because you became a mother", their name will be crossed out and their candidacy will be invalidated. Eko invalidates his candidacy here.

I don't remember seeing Eko's name in the caves but if he was there then I can see few explanations. I don't think all the names were Candidates. We can assume that MiB copied the list from Jacob's lighthouse but no one said that all the names there stood for Candidates: they were just people that Jacob was observing. Also, mind that some survivors were marked by Jacob AFTER the crash, like Hurley and Sayid. Maybe Eko wasn't marked yet.
