Iam still captivated each time when I watch these shows, as a young teenager in the 70’s my dad and I would watch every episode every Saturday! Now that I’ve taken up gold panning as a hobby, and reading books on the history of mining in BC I can only imagine how hard life was back in the gold rush hay day! Thank you for these priceless time capsules of BC history! Bill was a true story teller and is truly missed !

TY for these priceless history tales. I get that a lot of mineral wealth is still out there, but it involves a lot of hiking...

In 1986 on the May long weekend I hiked to the top of Mt.Gladstone with a friend . The snow was mostly gone which was unusually early . We didn't look for gold , just out exploring . Camping out the first night a thunderstorm broke right on top of us . Good times lol Coryell to us was along the CPR railway , there was a water tank and siding shack with a speeder as there were regular rockslides and snow slides along the route. Gladstone village was in the creek bottom which had some flat areas where buildings once stood .

Lakes do disappear and this seems to be the case of why bedrock is bare and exposed in this pit. When it’s not a pit it is a quarry or a lake 100%. In Oregon there is a lake that is seasonal too: “The lake begins to fill in the late fall, fed by several small surface streams, and continues to fill all winter in a series of rain or snowstorms. But as spring turns to summer and the streams dry off, the lake drains down a huge hole located on the lakebed.”

"Home on the Range" is a mining song??? Boy, that's pushing it! LOL LOL Never heard the mining comparison of a song about the range....? Didn't know you found gold on the range. I'd have never guessed. History can be as crazy as anything else!

I also believe that when he is taking to his buddy in the letter about being there in May (always going in May) they encountered a creek made by snow melting which would run downhill into the lake intersecting with sander creek. I think Bill here misunderstood that the creek with the waterfall “ran into sander creek”, meaning that it is an entirely different creek that intersects with sander creek. This creek seems to be seasonal and made due to snow melting on the mountain. It was something they all would remember for directions.

You have to figure when people go exploring off into the wilderness, they will need water and a wise way to travel to their destination is to follow the creeks for water. A gold prospector in general would always follow a creek anyway up to the source of the gold.

Today's gold price is just over $2300 oz. American. Some say gold will be $5000. Oz. In 5 years. American dollars.
