Slight correction: when Eisner left, the studio reorganized as the Iger and Roche studio, Iger's new partner being Ruth Roche, who was also the business manager and executive editor. She also wrote a newspaper comic strip that Matt Baker drew called "Flamingo". But I'm just being pedantic-- I love this series, I've been looking for content like this on KZbin forever and I'm so happy I found this channel!

I had no idea the history of Phantom Lady was so complicated even for the ever shifting world of comics publishing. And I also had no idea Nightveil was supposed to be based on her as well as Dr Strange. One of the things I thought so interesting about PL was that blackness that came out of her compact. It was one of the earliest uses of a purely graphic element to add visual interest, somewhat like Batman's cape came to be, although her contemporary Plastic Man was also one of the most graphically interesting characters, far more than her where the potential was never very developed. Technically I like the longer format, but this one was pixellated at full screen. Looking forward to 10 when it comes out.

I really love the way you put these videos together, they're like the unofficial continuation of Ron Mann's Comic Book Confidential documentary! Dave Stevens is another brilliant comics artist who was tragically taken from us too damm soon :-( And with her hairdo in the 50s I always thought Baker modeled her look after Bettie Page.
@FizzFop16 жыл бұрын
I thought she was modeled on Bettie Page too. I was sort of surprised when I found out she wasn't. I guess that was a "look" back then.

Incredibly thorough! I would quibble about your claim that Matt Baker was the "first" black comics artist. He's not even the first black comic BOOK artist, but he's certainly the earliest "well-known" black comic book artist, due to his notoriety for Good Girl Art. There were others before Baker, but they're not remembered because they didn't work on high-profile characters. Most of them worked for the smaller publishers. Then again, there's George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat. A black artist who passed as white (but who predated Baker), and was, after all, considered some kind of genius. Otherwise, kudos all-round for a superior production!

Supposedly the "headlights" issue of Phantom Lady was drawn by Matt Baker, but Baker was a purist about anatomy and wouldn't have exaggerated her breast size. Baker was popular, and Fox knew nothing about art; so Baker's name was simply signed to the book in order to get more money out of Fox.

I liked the Freedom Fighters as a kid. I was already enchanted by DC's Multiverse, and the idea of putting several Quality Comics characters into a team really appealed to me. I also liked Nightveil when it came out a few years later, although I never really got into the Femforce team. They even published one of my letters in the Nightveil letter column. I didn't realize that Nightveil had her meta-origins in the Phantom Lady, though.

Actually, I think they are a great example of what could go wrong if a Society decides to enforce censorship without boundaries. And then, I understand Wertham later retracted of all his conclusions. The CCA did stupid things, but as an example, it encouraged some writers to defy the clasification and publish stories about "delicate" matters; the most famous example is Spiderman #96 through #98, a story that was rejected by the CCA because "it mentioned drugs"; I just read the Department of Health Education and Welfare actually asked Marvel to address the theme. So Marvel went and published it without the approval from the CCA.

Nickelodeon was called originally named Pinwheel when it premiered. I mentioned Nerdrotic, Young Rippa, the Quartering, and Comic Tropes, but there are other exceptional hardcore comic book fans putting in serious work. There's also Kirby Continuum, Matt Draper, Casually Comics, and although the three I'm about to mention are into Star Wars more than comics, they do cover the MCU and DCEU and comics on occasion. @@FizzFop1 no problem! We've had similar issues on the Northworthy Sagas and Stories channel here on KZbin, which I contribute to. May I say that your content is excellent : way ahead of many other comics-themed channels. 😊

Recently I discovered your series "Lost hero of the golden age". It is very informative and well-researched. Thank you for sharing these interesting facts about the history of comic strips and graphic story-telling!! But I think you undermine the effects of your valuable efforts by two things, that you introduced - possibly in order to make the videos look 'fresh' and 'dynamic': (1) As pointed out before, the music is much too loud. At times I can hardly understand what you are saying (being not a native speaker of English makes it even harder for me). (2) Why are the pictures moving most of the time? I would prefer to take a closer look at the drawings and to be able to appreciate the artwork, which is made impossible by the unnecessary moving effects. - How many episodes does the series consist of? "21? I cannot find ep. 8 and several others on KZbin.

Hi Odysseus Laertiades! Thank you for watching! My older videos have audio problems. I did not have software and knowledge to do a good job. I am in the process of re-doing all my old videos. I decided to get rid of the episode numbers...The #8 episode was the original Springheeled Jack video. I move the pictures sometimes because most comics are 8 by 11 format and the computer screen is 16 by 9 format. It's hard to have a wide shot to do the art/story justice.

Sorry about that Paul. I did this in stereo and didn't mix the channels. A lot of devices only play one channel of audio. I need to fix this.

Whenever you hear extravagant claims about social media harm, and the need for the government to control it, remember the remarkable similarity to the Seduction Of The Innocent moral panic (and many others).

Id like to see more superheroines, and the comercial side is very interesting to me. I like the noir song you used, It's good theming, but the parts where the background is a colored gradient kinda annoy me as a graphic designer. Just using few, solid, primary colors or black makes it look more elegant, like in the eight and third episode's thumbnails for example... Just, please, no more surprise-explosions, okay?
@FizzFop19 жыл бұрын
Bruno Franco Hi Bruno, thanks for watching...I enjoy the story behind the characters also. I listened to at least 200 songs before I found that one. I try to find a "theme" song for each superhero. I do different backgrounds for each story although I did rehash some of the ones I did for the Black Terror...It would be easy to throw out the same backgrounds every time. I agree black background looks the most elegant-but I don't want these documentaries to look the same. I think that would get boring for the viewer-especially if they're watching them back to back. As a filmmaker, I'm trying to do something different. I don't want these videos to look or feel like the documentaries you see on TV. Don't get me wrong, I love historical docs, but a lot of them are dull. Things like the explosion spices them up a bit.

Is Phantom Lady in the public domain?
@FizzFop17 жыл бұрын
Hi HIMMBelljuvo! Unfortunately, she is not. She is part of the DC Universe. At the end of this video, I tried to explain the situation--it's sort of complicated. DC does not consider the Fox and Ajax comics as part of the Phantom Lady Canon. They let other publishers reprint those stories because they felt they were unlawful use of the character when they were first printed. DC will not allow new stories using the Fox/Ajax version of Phantom Lady.
