Desmond is the reason that 815 crashed on the Island. Desmond became limitedly immune to the electromagnetic forces at the "heart of the island". He was the key (Jacob's ultimate long con) that stopped Smokey from leaving the Island in his supernatural state. Even if Jack (and Kate) didn't kill him, he would have left the Island fully depowered, evil but not a menace to all humanity. Desmond gave meaning to Charlie and let him find peace in his passing. Desmond was the failsafe that fake Locke couldn't anticipate. He accomplished the most important thing...making fake Locke non-supernatural, human and therefore mortal.

It's a very weird situation though because at the time they met at the stadium...Desmond would not have had this memory yet and it didn't even really happen for him yet. Think about it...what he did in this scene was only because of the fact he was skipping through time in 2004- that's where lost gets very tricky.

There's a slight factual error in this episode. 1996 Penny gives Desmond a 2004 era 8 digit central London telephone number (usually prefixed 020). In 1996 it would still be a 7 digit number with the prefix 0171.
