Steve, I was getting so excited at you walking around my old childhood area and then you got closer and closer to my house and you put the camera right on my doorway. I am so happy that it is still a family home and very well presented. You went by place where many of my friends used to live, some changed to apartments but a few are still family homes. That is the place I still go to in my dreams, the happiest days of my life were spent there. I can't tell you how this is the best video of the lot for me. Sliema was such a posh place when I was a teenager, that is why I thought all the Maltese people were as rich as Americans in the movies.

Wow how narrow Manuel Dimech Street looks now (was called Prince of Wales Road when we lived there up to age 17 before emigrating to Australia). Used to go up the stairs of the cop shop as kids and yell into the entrance then take off. That part there is Savoy Hill that is why it is so steep. We lived going down the other half of Manuel Dimech Street. We had a shop opposite Saviour Lane and my grandad's house was three doors up from the shop. Next to the shop is Peter's Meat now, used to belong to guy we knew as Ganni tal-laham (John the Butcher) whose elder sister used to wake us up with the rendition of God save the Queen on her badly tuned piano every damned morning. Could hear it through the walls it was that loud. We walked up to Rudolph Street towards where the Sacro Cuor Church is every morning for six o'clock mass then back home to have breakfast and do some work then back to Sliema Primary School in Blanche Street. Such memories you revive in my brain. Thanks for taking us for a wander Steve Pity you didn't go down the other half of Manwel Dimech Street. Maybe another times. Well done. But they have bastardised Sliema that's for sure

One of my favourite parts of Malta and the area where in which I always stay. I've got lost there too as it's easy to get disorientated by the odd angled streets, the hills, and the fact that you've got sea on three sides. My main interest is searching out old cars to photograph, which have alas diminished greatly in recent years with the reduction of import tariffs and the government sponsored scrappage schemes. One thing you can be certain of in Sliema is that you're never far from a crane and a building site! It must drive you mad if you live there; nearly as mad as the lack of parking... The area did seem remarkably quiet during your walk. Even the traffic on the seafront was light. Thanks for another enjoyable video to watch on a very wet and windy day here in Cornwall.

Very interesting walking around back streets, i found that the times i stayed in malta. How do you pronounce triq, street in maltese ?!
@EnglishmaninMalta4 жыл бұрын
Sliema is a interesting place that has grown so much ....oh Triq ..tri- >Q it's a bit hard to write in english To do a glottal stop, speak the part of the word before the Q. Stop your air flow when you get to the Q (don’t pronounce the Q, of course), and then pick up the word again to pronounce the letters after the Q. This sounds similar to when a Scottish or Cockney accent speaks a word like “better” or “fitting.”...watch this kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn6xdmiXbcaegtk

It is now 10 years since we first visited Malta. We stayed then at the Imperial Hotel, which is very close to where you have walked in this video -- that hotel has now been demolished and redeveloped. I enjoy watching your videos of the island -- you have a way of finding places that we have visited and then finding something that is tucked away -- something that we will visit on our next visit to Malta. However, I do wish that you wouldn't swing the camera about so much -- all the movement makes my eyes go funny and I end up with a headache. -- so more steady pictures held on to the views a bit longer please.

Malta's architecture looks quite varied. The Brits colonized Malta mainly, right?
@EnglishmaninMalta5 жыл бұрын
Malta has a long history just a little of its history in brief lol !!... first inhabited in around 5900 BC. The first inhabitants were farmers, and their agricultural methods degraded the soil until the islands became uninhabitable. ... Malta's prehistory ends in around 700 BC, when the islands were colonized by the Phoenicians.The Maltese Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which include the mysterious temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands. In 60 A.D. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island while on his way to Rome and brought Christianity to Malta. The Arabs conquered the islands in 870 A.D. and left an important mark on the language of the Maltese. Until 1530 Malta was an extension of Sicily: The Normans, the Aragonese and other conquerors who ruled over Sicily also governed the Maltese Islands. It was Charles V who bequeathed Malta to the Sovereign Military Order of St. John of Jerusalem who ruled over Malta from 1530 to 1798. Following the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights took Malta through a new golden age, making it a key player in the cultural scene of 17th and 18th century Europe. The artistic and cultural lives of the Maltese Islands were injected with the presence of artists such as Caravaggio, Mattia Preti and Favray who were commissioned by the Knights to embellish churches, palaces and auberges. In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte took over Malta from the Knights on his way to Egypt. The French presence on the islands was short lived, as the English, who were requested by the Maltese to help them against the French, blockaded the islands in 1800. British rule in Malta lasted until 1964 when Malta became independent. The Maltese adopted the British system of public administration, education and legislation. Modern Malta became a Republic in 1974. But maltese downfall they joined EUROPE ...LOL
