If you listen real closely to the notes in the 1968 version of Lost In Space, you'll hear the beginnings of John Williams' most popular work: the theme to Star Wars. Prior to scoring Star Wars, Mr. Williams scored two films for Irwin Allen, The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno; both came out in the '70's. The '65 version was okay, but the '68 version not only rocked, it was also a prelude of things to come for movie themes he would score in the years to come. One more note: when he was a guest conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra many years ago, he was well loved by the audience, and also treated us to encores of his works.

As someone who played french horn, trumpet, and baritone horn in symphonic bands and wind ensemble the themes were exceptional. Hearing the trumpet lead is wonderful. His story is an example of how you work your up in Hollywood. In the mid-1950s, Williams got his first job as a pianist in the Columbia studio orchestra, under the baton of Morris Stoloff. He started by just playing little piano riffs for a movie like "Picnic." After a while, according to Williams, Stoloff liked his work and asked him to write a few bars of music and sent him over to Alfred Newman at 20th Century-Fox where he worked on musicals like "Carousel" and "The King and I." A decade later, he got this gig at Fox for "Lost in Space." In 1971, he won his first Oscar for the adaptation of "Fiddler on the Roof." After that, "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "E.T." and so on. Along the way, he broke Newman's record for most Oscar nominstions with an unsurpassed resume of musical styles.

While the series did present some morality plays within the color seasons, the first season which was in Black & White had a much more serious and darker theme was the best season. Sadly, the actor who played Dr Smith pulled a William Shatner, and convinced the directors and writes to focus the attention on himself, making the episodes in color very cornie and slapstick. In one episode where they visited a world of young adults who were all a Hippie Stereotype, even as a kid I felt how traffic it would have been to be trapped forever in one's adolescents, similar to the Original Star Trek episode where kid live thousands of years, but upon reaching puberty develop a dabilitating disease which drives adults crazy and Leeds to their death. Had the color episodes been more serious and dark, they could have done a backstory on this alien world of Hippies, and shown the negative consequences of a perpetual adolescence, a good message for parents who might spoil their children, and to show children why growing up.isn't such a bad thing. Strange enough, the actor who played Dr Smith went in to portray the Commander of a colony built on an asteroid, in the Saturday Kid Vid show Space Academy. In this show, he was more of a mentor rather than the bafoon, and I think such a transition of Dr Smith from the caniving evil doctor only out for his own benifit, to someone who learned the best thing for his survival was the well-being of everyone aboard the Jupiter 2, could have made the series far better, and may have helped it last longer. The series also made the mistake of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, which was skimping on the costume effects. Star Trek is a good example of how to do it right, due to budget constraints, a lot of what made scenes was, the lighting, the music, the story, and when William Shatner wasn't overacting, the acting. The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants follow much more in the vain if Star Trek, as did many other science fiction stories. Sadly, many series died due to the costs of production and poor writing. Logan's run is an example of this.

Lost in Space was FUN and really stimulated our imaginations as children! Interestingly, I only remember the original theme. Yes, the second theme is definitely more upbeat; however, the urgent, staccato, somewhat frenetic vibe of the original, in my view, truly captures the drama of what the Swiss Family Robinson actually goes through ("Warning - warning - Danger Will Robinson!). Perhaps the most distinctive character was the one who was too clever for his own good and always royally screwing things up! (Most have you know who I mean, yes?)

So were we in the 90's. I watched all the 60's star trek , plus shows from the 70's which were then, old to me. It is a different world now. We were on the beginning of the computer age and digital and internet and wow..... I bet the technological world doesn't change as much in the next 100 years as it has in the past 20-25 years. Not sure what more they can do with our level of tech... unless there is a major breakthough.. they way jet power was compared to propeller. One thing is for sure... conventional travel though space will not get us anywhere. Crazy how far some of the distances are. But... can you imagne knowing that the universe is finite. Despite all that space.. one would always wonder what was on the other side of the edge. Will someone read this comment in 10,000 years and say... what... they thought the universe was infinite... that's like saying the earth was flat. Silly people!

I remember all of those shows (except Leave It To Beaver and Lassie) when they were new. Space 1999, I think, was actually produced in the 1970s, as was The Partridge Family.

You were "lucky" to be glued to the TV? No wonder baby boomers are all morbidly obese. In the 90s as kids we actually ran around outside, played outside, played sports, rode our bicycles, etc. TV was there too but we rarely seemed to watch it. Except on a rainy day. Though even then, rain is just rain, it's only a bit of water. Put on a coat and you can still run around in the rain and play football (i.e. FOOTBALL football, not American football (handegg), FOOTBALL football football).

Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit in the 70s Lost in Space aired every summer up to Labor Day so by the time Season 3 hit there was always the reminder school and summer break was about to end. It never failed as we always went upnorth Labor Day weekend so I'd miss some of the last few episodes until the next summer.

The first theme is my favorite. I sometimes stay up late Saturday just to hear the theme music before going to bed. It was one of my favorite shows as a child. I'm so glad there are reruns in syndication.

The final LIS theme was by far the best, in my humble opinion. Of all of Irwin Allen's TV science television series LIS, Time Tunnel and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea were my absolute favourites. I did not care for Land Of The Giants. Those give me great childhood memories. 😊👍

I much preferred the first theme-- and still do. I also preferred the intro with the cast as cartoon characters stretched out on an air line in space. I never got into the second intro.

I think this tune if extended a little longer would have cracked the top 10 as an instrumental on 45. If released in 67,68 .

Both versions of the Lost In Space Themes were written and arranged by John Willims, who also wrote the Star Wars Themes. In the credits, he's listed as Johnny Willims.

@sleepypie The difference is Herb Wallerstein did the theme and most of the music for the 1st Season of IDOJ, while Hugo Montenegro did the theme from the 2nd - 5th Seasons. Montenegro did perform music cues for one 1st Season episode, "How Lucky Can You Get," the episode in which both Tony and Roger were promoted from Captain to Major.

I remember watching the first episode. My dad had heard about a new science fiction show and we were both excited to see it. Maybe I'm wrong ,but it seemed so serious it was almost scary (as a 10 yr old). And then it seemed like it took a giant turn from a foreign agent sabotaging this important breakthrough expedition to a neighboring solar system into a sit-com like fumbling lazy nincompoop that was accepted into their family. I still have fond memories of this show as a kid, but I still wish it had had a more serious tone. Probably would have only lasted 1 episode.

Good sci fi series. However, season 3 was getting to silly and cheap looking. I used to get so mad, I agreed with major west, get rid of Smith before it was too late. Smith doubled crossed the Robinsons too many times.
@yarpen264 жыл бұрын
The Netflix remake is likewise bending over backwards trying to give reasons why the Robinsons have yet to toss Smith overboard.

I always thought the antagonistic relationship between Dr. Smith and the Robot was the axis of the series. The insults Smith tossed at the Robot (often quoting Shakespeare) were priceless as were Robots retorts.
