Exactly... Everybody in Australia knows that is the drill. They also could of used the international distress message of 3 consecutive shots in the air.

You need the hema app on your phone as a back up.. no reception needed, I use it when I’m out 4x4ing in an unfamiliar area, you’d be surprised how many tracks it has on it, but at least if there’s no tracks, it still has you location and you can track your route 👍

In My 30 Years with an Emergency Service Organisation I’ve done a few outback searches for missing hunters. Found most of them. One of My advantages in being a trained land search specialist, was that I was also a hunter. One I never found was a Pig Hunter. Eventually his body, well most of his body, was found. For some inexplicable reason known only to himself, he crossed a fence. By doing so, he placed himself outside of Our logical search area. As near as We could ever figure it, he crossed the fence after getting lost. Those search experiences are why I always carry My GPS Enabled Personal Locator Beacon whenever I’m out and about, especially now that I’m older and less able. Of course I always recommend that you carry a pack of playing cards, so when you get lost you can sit down an begin playing Patience. Eventually somebody will tell you which card to play next and then you can ask them for directions.

On 2 occasions I’ve had similar situations, and on both of those I had a compass on a cord around my neck. As long as you take note of the directions of the main road you will be good . These occurrences happened prior to hand held GPS being available. Even now that I have a GPS with all the topos For all of Australia loaded, I still take note of the main road and have the compass around my neck. You need to get you an Amateur radio license, and carry a good handy talkie with you. Maybe you could have kept in communications with your mates. I was hunting in Arizona in the winter once upon a time. A blizzard rolled in and I was snow blind and lost in the storm. Luckily for me, we all had handheld radios. After 2-3 hours in sub-freezing weather, I was able to get in touch with my hunting partners. I do have to say, it was a bit troubling to me at the the time. Glad you made it out okay.

You dont need a mobile phone signal to make an emergency call for help, there is a number you can call that goes directly to a satellite then gets routed to emergency services. You always have to fire two shots for people to find the direction, I always carry an old fashioned compass for a last resort, I have had to use it also, relying on battery operated systems is a good way to get lost, I know backtracking is great but only when you have power. If you’re ever lost, fire 3 shots in the air as fast as you can. You shooting in one direction will send the sound one way, firing up in the air (as dangerous as it is) will spread it even. Just goes to show how easy it is to get lost! Specially at night time as what you see in the day is totally different at night! Many will not understand.

@@SkidPig I use a gps and we all carry handheld UHF radios....worth their weight in gold once you lose eye contact. I would suggest if you are going to buy one, walk straight past the cheapies....those little 0.5 watt jobs are ok when you are only a 100m apart, but if you can afford it go for a 5 watt radio - these will get you quite a few kilometers range (and even further if you can find some higher ground). Also, as UHF is pretty much line of sight, getting to clear ground or high ground is best, because thick scrub or hills will cut the distance down dramatically. Glad it all worked out, but yeah, scary stuff...been there done that, which is why I bought the GPS and radio. If you're prepared to put in the effort, (it ain't easy and it's time consuming) with a Garmin GPS, you can actually record your track and by using about 3 different programs on a PC, convert them to a map that you can load on the unit. I have all the roads and creeks for the property I go to as a map, so no matter where I am on the property, I can look at the map an know how far I am from roads etc.....makes life so much easier.
