The Ancient City of Butrint was built in the 8th Century B.C. by the Greeks and of course ruled by others including the Romans. The city ruins are incredibly in tact and illustrate a vivid story of the history of this magical spot off the coast of Albania just north of the border with modern day Greece. If you come to Albania or to Greece this is definitely a place to visit. If you can't make it here, you must watch this video. Welcome to Butrint, one of most important archaeological sites in Albania.
Cheers

It makes you realise as you wander through these ruins how really small we all are. I don't believe that buildings built today would survive as many years as these ones.. The modern world thinks it knows it all but really we know nothing! Beautiful place.. had never thought to visit Albania but now???

Greetings Snow and Kurt, I cannot thank you enough for taking us to these ancient ruins. Snow was the perfect tour guide and I felt as though I was back in time. What a beautiful place and I wish that I was there with you guys seeing it for the first time. If you close your eyes you can smell the cherry trees in bloom and feel the people that once inhabited this wonderful place. I watched the video twice!

You guys are fantastic tour guides. So informative and interesting. I learn so much through your travels. Thank you. You guys should create a book of little walking guides of what you see that includes the history you learn and what you see in current times, your takes on the food, culture and nature of these areas. It would help fund your travels and those that purchase them from you can use them in their own travels. Would be so cool.

I love all your videos, but this one has been particularly fascinating. Albania has far surpassed my expectations. I realize now how little I knew about this part of the world. I can't thank you enough for opening my eyes. You are wonderful teachers and tour guides. And since I'm at a point in my life when I am essentially bedridden, your videos are a source of escape to beautiful places. I appreciate being welcomed along as you travel the world.

Hi!! At minute 8.53 the "door" you mentioned...those indentations that look like little spikes are the wearing down of the stone by the rope which was tied to the bucket that people used to probably get water from down there...we see that on the stones of old wells here in Portugal.

I was coming here to see if anyone else knew that and if not, say it 👏🏻👏🏻 I saw it on a property viewing online where they had a well inside the house and the same thing had happened. The rope friction had worn the stone down. This one looks like it might be marble.

Nice! Curt missed a big aspect. When he saw the red paint, there was an awning over it. Unlikely to be an actual painting from Greco-Roman times. It would have washed away exposed to the elements as it is. I'm guessing it's likely washed out graffiti. The awning, on the other hand, is what I found fascinating. All these things had awnings on them to protect the spectators from the sun. I don't know why it's there. It doesn't seem to be any official anything since it didn't have a placard. But I found it fascinating. The poles fit perfectly in the holes in the wall. It's quite the visual to imagine the whole thing with awnings.

Butrint is not a Greek City but Albanian! Albanians who are Illyrians & are related to the ancient Pelasgians & Macedonians pre-date Greeks. By saying Greek you are giving a credit to the Greeks like they came in and build this city for us. Please read 'THE ALBANIANS An Ethnic History from Prehistoric Times to the Present' by the American born historian Edwin E. Jacques.
