Looking forward to losing subscribers, Ryan ? Since, you introduced your new riding buddy to your followers community, couldn’t help wondering how does this guy perform when the terrain gets hilly ? Well, it didn’t take long to find out, unsurprisingly, somebody, with a BMI nowhere near to a climber BMI is into hike-a-bike uphill, very likely slowing you down (?). Your promising European Divide Trail (EDT), Sweden section, ride (a section which is less documented than other sections, further South) has morphed into a time saving, boring tarmac ride, then into a not much better Komoot, Gravel option enabled, ride. Potential EDT riders looking forward to figure out its difficulty through the lens of an experienced rider, like yourself, with a GDMBR under their belt and for a comparison will be disappointed. A missed opportunity, sad.

I wonder if you went to Iceland or Greenland for bike packing? Cycling at those places is definitely on my dream bucket list. Could be hard though from what I read about it. But if you have the opportunity, you should invite him too and do the frog dance 😆

One of the great things about bicycles is that you can do it at any age. Just a slow, half hour ride around the neighbourhood can make you feel 20 (or 40) years younger. I speak from experience. :-)

I'm not a cyclist, I don't even own a bicycle, but I love watching cycling, up until a few weeks ago I mostly enjoy watching stuff like the Tour de France. The KZbin algorithms suggested your channel to me, and I can not believe how much I enjoy your videos and infectious enthusiasm. An introvert by nature, it's astonishing to me how easily you connect with people. Keep up the amazing content Ryan.

I never would have believed it: but I´m officially admitting to planning my first BikePacking adventure next summer. Gotta get in shape, research and buy gear, all that stuff and its all because of you Ryan. I´ve been watching your videos for over a year. Enjoying them a lot but resisting this infection bravely. Resisting the well known, highly contagious energy, adventure-lifestyle and positive attitude of Ryan Van Duzer. I think 2 years of resisting this, is probably a Guinness record or something but I´m officially giving in to this amazing condition. Already started my training, and my knee is hurting. 😄 Thank you so much for being who you are, enriching our lives and inspiring a lot of people to get off the couch and live some before dying. ❤ Of course I have to document it all, posting it on my channel. Cause I´m just going all out on this I´m becoming the Ryan Van Duzer of Finland. 😄 But seriously thank you 🙏 However if something goes sideways, I´m also blaming you 😉 Cheers mate, as we do not say here in Finland. At all. We just grunt for goodbye. *Grunt*

I did a 1600 mile ride from Santa Fe to Seattle in May using a route created by one of these route/track apps. It made it clear why it's nice to ride "established routes" whenever possible. One problem with these apps is that people use them to record their "bike ride" without accurately noting what type of bike or type of ride, and then their route becomes a potential choice for other riders, even if they are on totally different sort of bikes and capabilities. The route generated for me including sections of fairly advanced mountain biking, totally inappropriate for my gravel bike + flatbed trailer. I'd love to see a "bike touring" choice in some of these apps, since it seems that even Komoot doesn't really offer even Ryan what he really wants/needs.

And yet, some Swedes envy the Austrians, who get 2 years of paid leave. Dads can share the time with moms. It is also prohibited by law to work 8 weeks prior to giving birth, and 8 weeks after. This was among the reasons my gf and I decided not to move to the US, even though we were tempted.

The days has to be shared between parents, but it IS 480 days *per child* so people who have like five children in quick succession can basically be away from work for years. But that is not very common. The average family size is like 2.1 children or something...

Great to see the beautiful countryside in Sweden. "Ordinary scenery" is often the most interesting of all. As a Canadian, I often think of Sweden and Finland as alternate realities to my country - we could learn a lot from them. You have a lot more experience on the bike than I do, but I found on bike trips that raising or lowering (usually raising) the saddle by maybe 1/8 of an inch helped with intermittent knee pain. And sometimes a compression bandage for a day or two. EDIT: Another random thing that just came to mind - in the 1970s, there were many TV commercials for Participation, a public service program designed to get people into more physical activity. One of their best known ones claimed that the average 60 year old Swede was as fit as the average 30 year old Canadian. :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn6nZGiqis1ge80

A couple months off for maternity leave in the US? Nope. We get zero in the US. No mandated leave at all. It varies by employer so you might get a week or three if you are lucky of paid leave, but there's no requirement. None.
