'Have all the authority to put people to death and things like that'... lol as cute as the old lady is.. the end of the Monarchy is a good thing. I think the concept of Royalty is something society has for the most part grown out of and realised its folly and frankly its inappropriateness. People need someone to look up to.. and one could argue a monarchy is an institution that can develop a sense of ethos. However, this sense of community carries with it servility, which can never be a healthy thing. In certain countries in times past the Thai Monarchy provided the Thais with a father and mother figure to worship and indeed the Thais revered them... encultured over many decades to hold the king in reverence of the highest order. In recent times the Monarchy has not received the same amount of reverence. Indeed the Thai Monarchy has undergone a period of dissent whereby many Thais have spoken out against the Royal family's role in society - namely lamenting it should be secular from politics and it's enormous wealth bought under control. The ongoing dissent is also because the previous King died after many decades and the new one is not considered in the same ilk or realm of reverence. It is an intriguing phenomenon how people across the world still worship a royal family as though it was extension of nationhood and a form of solidarity and ethos that makes them feel an almost infantile attachment to the elitist paternalism which Royalty provides. I guess similar arguments can now be made of our world leaders and religion and big business.. people are now subjected to new entities that create servility. What kind of society we ought to become is not clear - but whatever society we live in there will always be those who who feel they are born to rule.
