I’m 5’11 & 75kg. I just purchased this board in a 5’7 30L for surfing this summer here on the east coast of Australia 🇦🇺 I rode it for the first time yesterday in 1-2ft and it was MAGIC. It generates speed and power from literally nothing & and really digs and holds carves. The most fun I’ve had in a while! So excited to surf it all summer.

I've had three of these boards and I will say that Noel nails the characteristics to a tee. Spot on, with regards to flow, responsiveness, twin fin vs trailer, etc etc. The Cali twin would have to be one of the best boards I have ever ridden in 1 to 3 foot surf, all conditions. Such a versatile all round small wave board. Cheers Noel.

Hi Noel, I love my CA TWIN! I'm a beginner/Intermediate and this is the first board I've really clicked with. I love getting it on rail and the speed is just addicting. It has such an exhilarating combo of speed and stability. Coming from a skateboarding background, perhaps because I'm more of a front footed surfer it's easier for me to turn.

I have a similar shaped board by another shaper and for the intermediate surfer in typical so cal slop conditions I think this MR outline and twin plus trailer is the best type of board. Mine is pure magic. Lots of glide, forgiving, paddle-ability, but can still go vertical. And with a trailer there is minimal adjustment going back to your standard shortboard thruster when the waves pick up.

Awesome review Noel, you're a legend. I've been thinking a lot about buying this board and not sure if I should go for 5'6" 28.5L or 5'7" 30L. I'm 6'0, 152lbs 28 years old (16 years surfing) and have been riding this shortboards for last 2 years(Monstabox 5'10" 28.5 L, Channel Island Happy 5.11'' 27.58L). I want the MR Cali Twin with a bit more volume than what I usually ride, to give me that extra paddling power and be able to catch smaller waves and compete in crowded pointbreaks. My goal is still improve my technique and be able to generate lots of speed, a forgiving and soft surfing that gives me that cruisy and curvy turns, but also when waves are a bit more powerful I can surf it rail to rail without feeling that stiffness from high volume boards... Do you think I should go with more volume than usual (30L) or keep same volume (28.5L)? Thanks much!
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Alberto Arias The 5’7” at 30 liters might be a bit much unless your used to shredding more foam on you Grovelers. The CA Twin is fast and loose and paddles great. I like my boards a bit more boards more sensitive so I would go 28.5 but if you want the extra float and cruise a bit go 30 liters.

Second session it struggled in knee high side chop. But on a decent thigh high wave it flys and has a snappy pivoty feel. I think i could have gone up a liter or two as well because its loose due to the curvy tail rocker. I need to test it in 4 ft surf which i believe it will work best in 2-4ft surf. Carlos Rodrigues CA Twin is a Twin + Trailer so it will Pivot Better. The FB is a legitimate Performance Twin Fin with no trailer option. Both boards are epic.... if you want a true Twin Fin then go FB, if your want a little more pivot then go MR CA Twin. Pretty simple... don’t make it difficult by trying to compare two completely different boards. A Twin + Trailer is not a true Twin Fin in my book. The Trailer is like riding a bike with training wheels... super fun but with the extra speed and hold... it also has a bit of drag too.
@mattclem3824 жыл бұрын
Noel, you had mentioned that you don't like it when a board goes flat on the wave face through turns. You said it's better when the rail holds and the board is on angle through the turn. Watching this video it seemed the board was going flat on the top turns. Am I seeing that right? Did you feel that way on the board?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Matt Clem The board felt good on rail... and I could hold it on rail through turns. Other boards that go flat start on rail and then go flat when I don’t want it too. If your seeing the board go flat.... then your seeing something I’m not. CA Twin felt solid with Twin Plus Trailer.
@mattclem3824 жыл бұрын
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Ok thanks. When I first heard your comment about turns and the rail angle it became something I always watched for in your videos. I always look for boards with good drive and smooth performance rail work through turns. Maybe I'm mistaking the "twin fin top turn release aesthetic" with going flat. In a stab in the dark video Mick Fanning said he looks for a board that has good drive, and that he can lean on rail quickly and easily. Matt biolos said that the right board is one that allows you to make speed easily and allows you to do the turns you want to do. I suppose finding the right balance of speed and control depends on your ability and the wave type. Always learning so much from your show. It has been a huge help in putting the puzzle together. Thank you. One thing I keep thinking about. You say that you don't add liters on your grovelers because board design compensates for the smaller wave size. Many people tend to add liters on their grovelers, myself included. Do you think this could be because you always surf the same spot and the waves basically break the same way, with the same shape, just smaller? If you had a wave that didn't break down the line with good shape I would think you would want more volume. What do you think?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Matt Clem I never want to add foam if a board paddles good and has good glide. I like my boards quick and responsive... if I were surfing a beach break my Grovelers would go good there too.... still the same glide and paddle but a beach break will often have more punch or power and I still want to get into the lip quick. Adding foam to a Groveler makes them turn slow, disrupts flow, and have less performance.
@ewillens4 жыл бұрын
Watching some of your past reviews, a couple times you mention that your go to fin size for small waves is large, especially on HPSBs - is this to give you increased drive / speed? Do you go with more or less flexible fins when going large in small waves?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
ewillens Yes I like a Large fin in smaller waves to increase drive and speed. I choose a Large fin in my Grovelers too.... and yes I like a fin with a little more flex to increase projection or pop in my turns when the waves are weak. Stiff fins work best in bigger or more powerful surf, and fins with a bit of flex are better in smaller surf.

Hi Noel I took your recommendation for booties and went to go look for Xcel dry locks. My daughter Doesn’t like booties because she can never find your size and I never thought of dry locks.I went to my local surf shop and didn’t find any in half sizes. And I also went online and looked everywhere looking for half size because She would be a 5 1/2. How are you able to access half sizes I can’t find them anywhere? Thanks for the video and hope to hear from you

It's nice to see the process you do over time with the reviews. In the beginning, you were a short guy, and over time, your style seems to open to new design that you used to love less in the past..

I’m 75kg 5.10 riding a xanadu piglet 29.4 litres wanting a cali twin light speed. What size would you recommend please?
@izandevainmyheart11294 жыл бұрын
Your backhand attack sells it for me. Backhand can be difficult to master on twins, quads, twinzers. You look really confident on those lefts. Also Im 5'8" and usually abt 195lbs not fat at all. I'll still try to surf with a mix of Richard Kenvin carve and more modern competitive style. I've been riding between 5'10 and 6'0. I feel like I need something that wont radius out of the pocket on typical sd waves. Something like this MR collab looks good here....but I'm afraid because of my weight to drop down to the lengths you're riding.

This id love to hear a comparison to the rusty miso
@surfnshowreviews77776 ай бұрын
Miso offers more rail engagement and surfs better in bigger waves…. It’s more of a daily driver. The CA Twin is a better Groveler and it’s faster down the line with less effort.

Daniel T The T2 is the closest on the Futures website. Sorry if it not there.... I really like the Futures T1 or the Akila Aipa Twins.... but you will need to purchase a trailer to pair with Akila’s. They are sold as a Twin Fin set only
