Thank you John. I had not realised that so many disasters had occurred in Norwich on 1st August even though I've lived through two of them, Garlands and the Library. I was at work during Garlands fire so didn't hear of it until I got home and was so pleased that no one had been injured, but not so when the library burnt down. I climbed up onto Kett's Heights to look over the City and was literally in tears when seeing the great plume of smoke arising from the place I loved so much.

Isn’t it weird that both library fires the fire stations were close by. Also I just learnt recently that on top of the what was the fire station in Bethel street has a wind thingy in the shape of a fire engine.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich6 ай бұрын
It is a very weird coincidence. I had no idea about the wind thing - I'll have a look for that!

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich I only spotted it recently whilst stood on theatre balcony, someone pointed it out while waiting for either Lord mayor’s procession to come past or the Pride march. I’d never noticed it before.

I will try and remember to have a look from there!

Oh dear, a day to take extra care if you’re within the walls of our fine city. It’s an incredible coincidence that two of those disasters were library fires. Thanks very much for this fascinating video. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich6 ай бұрын
It certainly does, and I imagine some people are getting as far away from the city as they can on this day!

An interesting one John. I remember the library fire well living in a first floor flat at the time, in Sussex street. I could see the Library, on that day I saw the smoke, by the time I could smell it I could see the flames. I remember the smoke lasting late into the evening, and the smell lingering, as the building smouldered. the positive of that day is the Forum, a modern building sitting well in the city centre. Maybe a video on Norwich in WW2 would be good, I have seen a lot of bomb damage photos over the years.

Aged 15, I watched the plume of smoke from the Garlands fire by climbing onto the flat roof of the extension of my parents' bungalow in Thorpe St Andrew. Prior to moving to Thorpe, we had lived out near Hempnall. One of the neighbours, a lady who would travel on the same bus as myself into Norwich in the morning, worked in Garlands' kitchens. Later we heard that she had the fear that she'd accidentally started that fire herself!

There's a blue plaque on Carrow Hill listing the first civilian casualties of WW2. I think they worked for J J Coleman's.
