Neil- LOST was made for someone like you. There has never been a show that gave so much to the audience. The payback here is that you also pay it forward to the audience. I've watched LOST beginning to end, going on 14x now, and I've taken this journey with many you tubers along the way, but your reactions, feedback, and responses have already made your channel my favorite. I'm not sure how "emotional" you get just yet, or how much you appreciate an A+ Giacchino score, but if you check those 2 boxes, I hope you don't mind but I'll be running side by side with you until the finish line. I only wish I could tell you where we were going? But as they say, its the journey not the destination.

As a Lostie, I have watched Lost too many times to be considered a sane person, but it's a show that once it gets it's hooks into you, you become a Lostie for life! I've watched countless reactors and to echo what a lot of us have been saying, you are the best Lost reactor out there, but when you do get to the end and inevitably watch other Lost reactions, I highly recommend Married to Film, American Mum and AlicePlays. Have you though of setting up a Patreon? So far who are some of your favorite characters? Great reaction as always!
@NeilTalks
@NeilTalks 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Jessica! I have started looking into setting up a Patreon, but it might still be a month or so away. I want to do it properly and make sure there's great value for subscribers, and I don't quite have the time for that while I'm working 60 hour weeks on this show. As far as favourite characters, I have to approach that a little differently than normal. Usually, favourite just equals who I like the most. But Lost has done a really good job of not letting me trust any character. Locke and Kate and Sawyer all seem to have conflicting motivations and are therefore at least partially untrustworthy. And I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop on Jack - he still seems too 'perfect' to be real. I think Kate and Sawyer have the most fascinating backstories. I think Locke is the most intriguing presence on the Island. And if I'm just going to hang out and have a few beers, make sure Charlie and Hurley are there too, please.
@junietunes2148

@@NeilTalks I'm so on board with Jack being too perfect, it took me awhile to like him because of that. Charlie and Hurley are the people I'd be chilling with if stuck on the Island, in my long ago life I sang in a few bands, so clearly I'd have a lot to talk about with Charlie and Hurley just has the best vibes. John is endlessly fascinating, whether you love him or hate him, he's just so intriguing. Sawyer will grow on you like a fungus and I'm really excited for you to discover more about his character and his arc. What I love most about this show is no character is fully evil or fully good, lots and lots of grey area. Thanks for always responding to your followers, Losties are such a fun, passionate group and it's so great to have you in the fold

Actually I'm really glad you brought this up because I have but 1 LOST regret. I should have gone back sooner. I was hooked on Lost from the start and loved it start to finish but after it was over I think my initial thought was I'll probably never take the journey again. So there it sat.....until one day 6 years later, my son and daughter were very mature 8 and 10 year olds, so I thought ...maybe By Walkabout it was just like old times, but my biggest surprise by FAR was how much I loved it the 2nd time. All the small events or hints from Season 1 onward were magnified. And each time since my admiration for the LOVE AND CARE Darlton took to execute, an answer all the questions the show touched upon, I fear, will never fully be appreciated. So NEIL here is my word of advice. When your done "rinse and repeat". because LOST is like sex. OMG great but overwhelming the first time. The 2nd time is where all the magic happens. Everything slows down, just enough to tickle your senses in ways you couldn't quite grasp the first time.

The writers do a really good job of marking the passage of time with seemingly throwaway lines like "it's been X days since the crash" or actual dates. As long as you remember that day 1 is September 22, 2004, you always have an anchor.

The only show I bought the season on dvd as soon as it came out after the season was over and rewatched it to keep me sane while I waited for the next season to air. I also own a big coffee table book called the Lost encyclopedia which goes over all the little details from the show. I haven’t watched it in years and this is so fun watching you experience it for the first time. I love your intrigue and enthusiasm for the show I also was watching another reactor but she was not as into the show and didn’t care about all the details as much. Funny that you said "Church of Locke"- I think I mentioned THE FUSELAGE, a site hosted by JJ Abrams early on. So on the threaded board we could create a topic of interest or whatever, and several of us started like factions that basically expressed who we related to most or were intrigued by. And there were threads for Kate and Sawyer and Jack and many more. I started one for Locke. It was titled Disciples of Locke's Teachings, with an Acronym of DOLT, which yes, I knew what DOLT meant, but disciples of Locke's teachings seemed so right and I thought that Locke wouldn't care, so why should we. SO basically it was a section or group of people just discussing Locke. You had to request to be a member. Terry O'Quinn joined and was very generous with his patience and time, answering questions, asking questions, both as Locke and as Terry. it was very cool. And when you said Church of Locke, it reminded me of this past experience.

I'm really enjoying your reactions, Neil. LOST is a journey. When I first watched the show, I thought that it might be filled with "red herrings." A few things might very well seem that way. However, some things that are mysterious might be revisited in a few episodes while other things might not be revisited for a few seasons. Part of the greatness of this show is the "thrill of the hunt" -- noticing interesting things that might be clues (big or small), disseminating clues, devising theories, etc. It is very much part of the adventure. When those clues pay off (sometimes for reasons we didn't foresee or understand), it made the show even more enjoyable. LOST had spin offs too. There was a novel ("written" by "Gary Troup" -- the Flight 815 survivor who was sucked into the jet turbine in the pilot episode). There was an "alternate reality game" called the LOST EXPERIECE. There was even a video game for the PC, Playstation and Xbox (called LOST: VIA DOMUS). However, don't look these things up because the labeling or descriptions might contain spoilers. I cannot recall another show that every did this. As much as I like some of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time, LOST was watercooler and cafeteria fodder for a very long time. You're just doing what many of us did when we found this show. However, I absolutely appreciate your meticulous examination and approach to the episodes. It brings me back to my own LOST journey! It actually makes me hope that they reboot the show eventually (not a remake but a reboot).
@NeilTalks

The Boone/Shannon thing is very complicated for sure. It's interesting to look at the motivations behind both of them after you get some more information. I think this is officially around the point in the series where J.J. Abrams left the show to focus on his other projects at the time (Alias + Mission Impossible III). He was heavily involved in the creation of the show but, from here on out, season 1 is led by Damon Lindelof. This is also the first writing credit of Carlton Cuse who, beginning with season 2, becomes co-showrunner to help share the load of crafting such a behemoth of a show like this. The Boone stuff in this episode is definitely a trip. Obviously the Shannon stuff was all a hallucination but I still feel like Boone might have had an encounter with the monster, even if he was tripping. Anyway, kudos to you for picking up on all the hints of how much Boone was obsessed with his sister. Definitely a super deep and complicated relationship there
@NeilTalks

Because of some urban legend goes "Lost leave many things unanswered", I saw people tracking their questions, to check here and there for answers. I personally don't recommend to do the same, because it will take on a dark path where you shout things like "they didn't answer about the number of trees on the beach, this show sucks!", but Neil, if you want to pursue the madman path, you could have your own crazy wall of theories. The way I see it, Locke helped Boone get over his unhealthy obsession with his sister - that's not a bad thing at all. The less Boone is involved with her, the better. And I think also this episode makes it rather clear that - while we may have drawn conclusions to the contrary up until now, based on the way we've seen Boone talk to Shannon on the island - it's Shannon who was the abuser in their relationship.
@NeilTalks

T R E N E T not Tenet. In this case Sayid is right. The lyrics are nonsensical. The signer is just going on about how the sea is part of his heart. The shepherd line follows one in which he compares the clouds above the ocean to plump sheep.

Yeah, as I mentioned below, I caught this afterwards. I'm going to stick with the theory that the 'r' is silent. :)

I had also a coincidence story this week. For the first time i heard that my father was smoking as a student. Very often he turned it himself with cigarette paper because normal cigarettes were too expensive. But i was also the first time in my new flat. The previous tenant left a thing in the flat. Just one thing. Cigarette papers in the kitchen cabinet. Coincidence?

What happened to your hair?! I swear, without it you look dare I say it, a little David Boreanz-ish. Ah, Boone and Shannon. Lost's little version of Flowers in the Attic. Even though they are stepsiblings, I could see how their relationship is messed up enough that this might happen even if they were blood related. Sorry, but it's true. As someone who enjoyed this show just as much if not more for the characters and their development, interactions, and backstories than the plot/mysteries, I appreciate episodes like this. I'm still so enjoying your reactions and really love when the show surprises you and you don't see things coming. Your critical eye and knowledge of the industry still provokes such interesting discussion and definitely makes you a favorite reactor to such a wonderful show.

Well damn, dawggirl! I'm a huge Buffy/Angel fan, so I'll take the Boreanaz comparisons all day. :) Although I tend to get 'less-rugged Josh Brolin' more often. And apparently I sound like Seth Rogen? Thanks for all the kind words - I love being surprised by well-crafted writing. Cheers!

Gotta love how they went out of their way to make the point that Shannon and Boone weren't blood-related right before they slept together. 😏 Still, it was pretty gutsy for a broadcast TV show to touch on semi-incest nearly 17 years ago.

If he did, his post-encounter reaction seems quite different from Locke's. Hopefully we'll find out eventually. :)

My interpretation is that no, he did not, or, if he did see the monster, he saw whatever version of the monster he thinks it is, therefore it would have no credibility.

This and the suitcase-episode is probably some of my least favorites in season 1. I'm not a fan of the "it was all a dream" approach, even if it's not the same. It feels a bit too much as a filler for me, but I guess in total, the fillers does a lot for the characters evolvement. It's a weird feeling, not liking an episode, but at the same time being glad its there. Glad you enjoyed it, Neil!

I think I'm just so thirsty for character backstory that I'll love any episode that teaches me more. And so far, that's been every episode. But I will agree that the 'it was all a hallucination' felt a bit hackneyed - it's such an old storytelling trope that it feels a bit cliched.

The good news is that LOST does NOT use this my game 'cheat' throughout the show. With a few minor exceptions (very minor) this is a 1 time occurrence. And it wasn't a dream but a hallucination, which is why I am ok with it. But I do understand your point.

I'm fine with the use of drug-induced hallucinations 😉 And I didn't feel that it was somehow 'cheating', as we plainly saw Locke mixing a paste and then deliberately smearing it onto Boone's head wound. So we had the opportunity to pick up on that and realise that what we were seeing wasn't real. There are plenty of natural hallucinogens...Locke making use of them was completely in keeping with his survival knowledge/skills (so it didn't feel like a cliche to me).
