Yeah, Taiwan was first colonized by the Portuguese. The island was called Formosa or 'Beautiful Island' in Portuguese. Later the Spaniards took over, followed by the Dutch. The Dutch eventually surrendered to the Ming Chinese in 1661. There's a movie called Koxinga (in Japanese). His father was a Chinese merchant/pirate and his mother was Japanese from Hokkaido Bay. Eventually the island Taiwan surrendered to the Qing dynasty from Mainland China around 1668. China ruled the island for few a hundred years until the Sino-Japanese war in 1895, where China lost to Japan and the treaty ceded Taiwan to Japan. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945 (end of WWII). After the Nationalist lost to Communist China, the Kumingtong (KMT) retreated to the island of Taiwan. Taiwan today is still called Republic of China (ROC), and mainland China is the People's Republic of China (PRC). You'll get a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Western cultures because of the history of different colonial powers. The island of Taiwan were originally inhabited by the indigenous natives, e.g. Iqab. There were many tribes and they were called headhunters because they actually cut off the heads of their enemies.

I can feel this girl is not typical western at all, she is modest, and friendly, already become chinese way to treat others. I went to france, now i am in american. European and American they always show their pride, rude, cold and unfriend to others and strangers. Even my roommate, she is a very nice white lady, when I gave her some fruits or food to show my friendly, she show her pride and caution to me. That made me so uncomfortable, maybe no others treated her very good before. People can be cool, but should not be cold. I still like chinese warm and modest culture, to be honest, kind, helpful and nice to any others are more important to show your stupid pride and cool , others are not your enemies! Maybe, Chinese grown up by surrounding love and warm(we care about others, others also care about us), western grown up by surrounding hurt and hate.

As you walk through a golden forest, a deep voice booms out from the silence: "Russell Bawden! You WERE going to be awarded First Comment...." You jump and blink in surprise. An enormous tree is talking to you! What - how - trees can talk?! "That would be great!" you say. "I'm sorry. You didn't say that you were the first commenter. So how do I know to give you the award?" "Well, I was!" "Yes, you were. However, rules are rules, I'm afraid. Perhaps next time." The tree extends a tangle of vines and leaves and pats you comfortingly on the shoulder.
