Lost your key for a motorcycle gas cap? No problem.

Stealing of any sort is both immoral and illegal.
In this video I talk about three ways to get into your motorcycle gas cap in order to replace it, if you’ve lost the key.
There are three main ways to get into a lock. Punching, drilling and picking.
Picking is the cheapest and doesn’t do any damage to the lock, so if you plan on simply having another key made, this is the way to go.
Punching, involves taking a metal object such as a screw driver or a flat punch of some kind, and driving it into the lock in order to shear off the pins so that the lock cylinder will spin freely. The same can be done with a rotary drill.
These last two steps are messy and do not allow you to rekey the lock. I plan to keep the lock as a spare and will eventually rekey it to the new key (with the new lock) that I ordered.

Nice video. I appreciate the extra info that included about the pins being on both sides of the tumbler if you key has 2 sides. Makes sense but that didnt occur to me until this video.

Break the lockpick set out and get the rake, just touch the tension aid for the lightest pressure and raking time. Raking takes every little tension and works wonders on tank locks. Picking is a mater of seconds with rake and the proper amount of light tension.

I undid the nuts around the edge then wiggled with it fir hours got it pull out then took it to a key cutting shop oh and also took the ignition of the upped yoke it as well they matched both if them and gave me 2 keys of both i did surprising what they can do.

so what is the permanent solution? Once unlocked can the pins be removed?

Grey Dog The permanent solution would be shearing the pins off with the screw driver, the lock would be broken and un-useable. If you picked it, you could then theoretically re-pin the lock to a new key. It does appear that the core comes out. However, you could also get a new lock for for most sport bikes for under 10$ on eBay.

Got a 06 kawi Z1000. Broke my key off in the tank. Can i just remove the nuts going around the cap and replace it with an aftermarket or does it not work like that?

Usually it does not work like that. Otherwise anyone could just open your tank with a wrench.

That’s all well and good. I guess you could spend 800$ and buy a new gas tank. OR, you can spend 30$ and just get a new lock… You just have to open the lock, either by picking or drilling.

On my EX250J the rear seat lock is cable-actuated so you can take all the plastics apart then pull the cable. Also, the solo seat cowl that replaces the rear seat has a design flaw where anyone can non-destructively remove it without tools. You just lift the rear peg out of the rubber grommet then rotate the whole thing until the spring-loaded striker retracts on the slotted pin. You can then lift it completely off and raid the contents of your under-seat tail storage, locking it back down like normal when you are done. Kawasaki never fixed this.

He says if you lose your key its a moot point on ruining the lock? There is a key code inside the cap to have a new key made so not exactly moot...js....but this method is the way to go to get to that code

I found a 2001 r6 in a tow yard been sitting for many years They were reluctant to sell it to me since they clearly remembered the prior owner lost his life Anyway after chasing down a different owner he accepted my offer of $500 dollars Proceeded to remove every part with any key related numbers, and taking them straight to my closest Yamaha dealer After running every number, what I learned is that it really somewhat comes down to from where it was sold Each dealer generally registers those numbers Maybe that’s BS , but they told me they could not produce a working key to me A different cycle my 92 Vance and Hines ltd FZR 600 using a mirror I got the numbers off the bottom of the ignition 3 digits I think it was And was able to get a perfectly cut key ready to go key But that 2001 they couldn’t produce it, and said what they have done is find a key making shop to hand cut a new one for $60 or $70 dollars And sold me a blank Yamaha key for only $30 dollars, Vaseline not included I ended up spending $25 dollars on eBay for a new ignition with key, gas cap and back seat lock included My Yamaha shop use to treat me much better, anymore not so much They want 6 months to just look at a cycle needing repairs to tell you what needs to be done They obviously don’t care or value my business I don’t spend enough on new cycles each year Sad but true Our world is tainted⚠️

My keyhole on my old 250 was rusted or something it was extremely hard to open with a key and one day i was trying to open it and the key snapped in half😂 so i have half of a key stuck in the keyhole impossible to get out i took a hammer and screwdriver to it and it aint coming out but luckily on a 250 you can just take the bolts out with an allen wrench and it comes off without having to open it so that was just an inconvenience for me

Ninja 250? Those have another screw under the lid. Normally you have to drill through to get to that one. That said, there are cheap Chinese replica Ninja 250 lock sets for the EX250F and EX250J/K. They also have Ninja 300/400 lock sets since those are EX250L/M and EX250P in some markets. That said, I found new/old stock genuine Kawasaki lock sets for my EX250J that were on clearance for even less. There’s no reason to have an unsecured racing cap or different keys for a street Ninja 250.

You might try turning it the other way as well! It might need a little lock lubricant. They make a special lube just for that!

You could use a key hook, or a broken key extractor! That might work. Most smiths use those to pull debris or broken key pieces from the key-way.

Thats actually a very good point! I didn’t even think to address this in the video. Although this is true, and something to be aware of, most motorcycle locks are made from a very low quality, soft metal. Risk of sparks is very low. Second, if you use a mineral or drilling oil, this will arrest any sparks and keep the surface from producing enough friction to cause a Sparling event.
