I think thats actually real rust too, unlike most of the videos on youtube, where they spray things like knives and axes with a solution so it goes rusty. Excellent job 👍

Nice restoration! I like the look of the final lock - the pitting lends a ton of character - makes it look really cool. Could you have just dropped the whole thing in rust remover or was it better to tackle it manually first? Great video! 👍

Maybe because there was small components he needs to take it apart first? I dont know much about restoring but that’s my guess
@fredrichardson9761
@fredrichardson9761 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChristinaMagma I'm in the same boat - I know next to nothing about restoration work. I think there's a good reason for it though - every restoration video I've seen so far involves disassembly first followed by rust removal of some sort. Just wish I knew more about the whole business! 😄

@@fredrichardson9761 restoration on physical object or art restoration both has some overlaps in methods and may differ depending on who's restoring said item, but generally factors include but not limited to: 1. restoring the actual part/art 2. restore original color, paint (or protective coating) 3. create new aesthetic for part (new colour, theme or material, paint etc) 4. replace part with new material of exact same make/build
@fredrichardson9761
@fredrichardson9761 2 жыл бұрын
@@ManomiiFox Yes, I have to admit I find the different goals of restoration pretty interesting. I was watching a very careful restoration of an object from WW2. It was actually more preservation than restoration - the goal was to remove or stabilize the rust while revealing as much original paint as possible. No new paint was added. Parafin was used to protect the final restoration. It was a very different an fascinating process.

When a metal object is that much rusted, then it is not worth restoring it. But it is fun to watch it being cleaned thoroughly at least regardless the condition.
