Mick headlined a free concert in my city a few weeks back. It was a half dozen local/small artists and Mick Jenkins. The music was all themed around justice, self-love, tough honesty, and lifting each other up. It was a truly inspiring show, and it was free. Mick is a helluva guy

Nowadays, you cannot bring up the cream of the crop of this hip hop/rnb/neo soul scene without mentioning the likes of Mick Jenkins and Kendrick Lamar and others. But Kendrick is just a shade better. Atleast to me. I can definitely understand how somebody might think that Mick is up there with Kendrick or better. To each their own I guess

With all due respect, I disagree. I am a big fan of Mick and his style, but he doesn’t tell a story like either of those two. Mick may be more of a lyrical craftsman, great at metaphors and entendres perhaps better than those two, but his experiences don’t always translate into a digestible story. I don’t listen to either Cole or Kendrick too much at all but they are on top of the game for a reason. To try to make a parallel, I also really enjoy Smino & Earthgang. Both on a song with Cole and they intro’d the track but still took a major back seat to Coles verse.

Totally Agree I’ve always personally put Mick as an Neo Soul “ Conscience Rapper” with all the elements he uses to layer his music & song like “Your Love”, “Drowning” ft Badbadnotgood, “Reginald”, Consensual Seduction etc. solidified how integral it seems to him as an artist to have that essence of poetic neo-soul mixed along with his exceptionally brilliant lyrical pen 🖊 game! Great reaction! I haven’t put this album down since it came out and didn’t fully grasp the depths of this song until I read an essay he did regarding the album. This song was inspired by the growth he’s made within his marriage and a newfound appreciation for his wife. As a relatively young married man whose had a similar experience, I felt this to my core. I relate to most themes of this album plus he’s a master of his craft

I just discovered serpentwithfeet last week - smooth and soulful. Mick Jenkins and serpentwithfeet have another song together, "Rug Burn", which is great too. Jenkins is phenomenal - pushing boundaries all the time. I think George is right- it might cost him a few supporters, but I don't think it matters because he seems so true to himself. Your "Front Street" reaction is still in my all time 5 greatest reactions. This was beautiful- thanks for all the hard work. And, by the way, I am completely enjoying Deaf2Radio. I've found some music on there that I am digging on so hard.
