Heard of ghost for years, but NEVER heard them. saw the outfits and wasn't interested in another black metal band (or any BLACK metal band, really). THEN I heard Cirice and Square hammer in short order (like last week). Loved it instantly! Bought albums 3,4. Need to check out 1 and 2 still. They need to do another Ghost song (perhaps Dance Macabre?)

he doesn't push his voice into a scream which would send them into 80s parody territory. the voice is contained within the music not pushing out of it in a strident fashion. it makes it very listenable.

Yeah but its understandable they didnt get it. Its really not until you understand how Ghost is effectively a concept band that you realize WHY his voice is like that and then you can appreciate what hes doing. Ive been to a Ghost show and it genuinely changed the way I looked at music. I went because a friend of mine was high on them and told me their shows were supposed to be awesome, I thought their music was just okay, but after leaving the concert and doing some research the genius starts to shine through. In a sense Ghost doesnt make music they make musicals

Cirice mean "church" in Old English. In the context of the song, Cirice is the character being sung to, as an audience stand in. Papa Emeritus III rebuking the idea of Original Sin (your soul is not tainted) and imploring the listener, through Circe, to seek the power that they have inside of them (the rumble that's calling), instead of relying on outside forces that will fail them (the church).

It's pronounced 'suh•reese'. And Cirice was referenced in the album's story "liner notes" as a forgotten pagan deity who once provided people with a sort of independence & communal awareness, who is now weakened as a consequence of modern man's commitment to building a secular industrialized society. The bottom line with Ghost is that you'll never be able to nail down exactly what they're really talking about in some of their songs because lead man Tobias Forge recognizes the importance of vagueness, thus allowing audiences to fill in their own blanks when interpreting it. Something only the best artists know to do when creating commercial art.

This song is about the devil talking to a broken person who is searching for a spiritual presence to take care of them, and the devil is taking advantage of their broken spirit in order to gain a follower. You guys were right on track with the demon possession idea, but the song's 1st person perspective makes it more of a seduction by the devil rather than a possession. Love the content guys and I'm glad you enjoyed the song!

So, I scrolled down a ways and haven't seen even a slight explanation of this band. This is basically a concept band. Some people say they are a satanic band, but from the band it seems they are just a concept band, writing songs from the dark side of the bible, not necessarily songs about satan. Anyways. The lead singer stays the same through each album, but the band members change. The members are called the "Nameless Ghouls" they wear masks and dont expose their identities (although recently they had to expose themselves because of some lawsuits filed against the front man Tobias Forge) the singer is called "Papa Emeritus" and there is a new "Papa" for each album. (So, the singer Tobias Forge, is the frontman for each album, he is the founder of the band, but for each album he plays a different character, a different "papa") Thus far he has gotten younger each album, but they have some new interesting stuff for their upcoming album, but I wont bore you with all that. So, "Papa" is basically an Anti- Pope. Anyways. It's a very very interesting band. If you want some more insight into the song you could watch the actual music video, or just do a quick google!

Every song is about satan. The band is like a tongue in cheek throwback to the first days of metal, but it's also tasteful and the riffs have been excellent on every record. Pivotal to the Identity of Ghost is that they *are* the monsters in their songs; trying to find people to corrupt and pull into the darkness. That is why they have these ominous lyrics- "Can't you see that you're lost without me?" In the Video for the song, they are in a church (old english: cirice) and playing for an audience of churchgoers, amongst them is one they feel they can corrupt, and they use things song to empower them, but also, gain control of them. It's really cool!

I'm finding some bewildering interpretations here.. The song is about the churches cruel and scarring impact on a person, and their desire (and need) to return to the group from which religion has separated them. Religion divides us, separates us from the group (the group/collective referred to in the song as "me"). We must escape the religion, overcome the scars from it, and re-unite with our fellow man (with whom we "see eye-to-eye"). "I can feel the thunder that's breaking in your heart" = empathy/sympathy/compassion. "I can see through the scars inside you" = I know the beautiful being you are on the inside despite the scars put there by the church telling you your soul is "tainted".

I love George's grimace as he headbangs! 😂 So, the frontman from Ghost was formerly a pop-metal singer and the "angelic", sing-song nature of his vocals is a deliberate choice. It serves as a stark contrast to their dark lyrics. Ghost is also deliberately "retro" with their sound. A good representation of this is their tune, "Ritual." Keep slaying!

It could be viewed as a love song form one soul who sees the good in someone who has been through so much of the evil in the world they think themselves evil. The singer sees past all that to their lover's essence and in doing so eternally binds himself to them. .....just a thought.

The best I can put it is that the backing instrumentals are supposed to give that ominous vibe given by something much greater than yourself while the vocals in front of it are this large dark omnipotence reassuring, "you are not what they make you to be. Join me and accept me within yourself for I am what you have needed." The sweetness of the vocals are endearing and alluring.

I had the same feeling about the vocals for most of the songs, at first. There was something with their songs that kept making me listen to them over and over again though. This band eventually just grew on me and are now one of my favorites. If you continue to give them a chance, you appreciate the vocal style more and understand it's importance.

Your interpretation about possession is pretty accurate in my opinion. I think it's more specifically the devil calling you to join him. Ghost is a band that needs some background. All elements is precisely picked, including his voice. The earliest material from ghost reflects more the pourpose of the band. They are essentially satanic, but not with that anger against God or christians, that you will find in black metal bands, but they worship Satan and his crew. They sound like the firsts hard rock and metal bands back in 70s and 80s, with an angelical voice (to recall medieval church), all to make a theatrical tone and context to their songs. I love them! All the work are really precise! Obs: all album covers make reference to classic horror movies (cirice is The Silence of the Lambs). Great review, keep it up! Cheers from Brazil!

Augusto Zimiani In some interviews with a Nameless Ghoul (probably Tobias) they said that it was satire, not satanic. The "get up" was because the music they listened to was considered "devil music" by their parents. And the band is centered around that. From what I heard. I could be very wrong.

They use the Satanic imagery and themes in the same way as the Satanic Temple in the US uses them. The idea and image of Satan is as a romantic (in the literary sense), an anti-authoritarian, and a free thinker and free person. Romanticist's interpretation of the Satan character from John Milton's "Paradise Lost" is as a rebel fighting for freedom from an oppressive tyrant, God. The modern use of Satan in many contexts is as a symbol of personal freedom and humanism. Most Satanists are atheists, who don't believe in gods or Satan, but use Satan as a symbol. In the US, Satan is also useful to demonstrate fundamentalist Christian hypocrisy and shut down religion being pushed into government.
