Like you say, a highly underrated 80s band that has no business being lumped in with any kind of hair bands. Straight up rock n roll. Tesla suggestions: Heaven's Trail (No Way Out), Little Suzi, Hang Tough, Love Song (a ballad, but an awesome one!), Edison's Medicine, Call it What You Want, What You Give...Tons of great songs! Although MTV promoted them pretty well - I don't think radio ever really played them. I know lots of people that never heard of them. They get called a "hair band" a lot, but never tried to fit that image. Their lyrics aren't your typical hair band party/drinking/drugs/girls/whatever stuff either. Like Edison's Medicine about Nicola Tesla... Who else writes songs about genius inventors from the early 1900's?!

They definitely seem more along the lines of power metal. Where power metal has lyrics that are along the lines of fantasy worlds were you think they were just playing a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and decided to write a song about it. Except this song has like a lyrical feel of if Sabaton existed in the 80s, and sounded like hair metal.

Very underrated band back in the 80's, primarily due to the abundance of glam acts appearing during those days. I consider them more of a hard rock band than anything else and one of the best there has ever been. Probably, Tesla has not been given enough attention because they did not fit into the glam sound and aesthetics, causing them to became a cult band for most of us. Frank Hannon is a guitarist with the background of all the great classic and metal bands of the 60s & 70s fused into his own style. Tommy Scheoch (former guitarist) is too. He brought that wild side. Phenomenal band. The Great Radio Controversy is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. Musically creative with great guitar work all over. Riffs and solos. Great drumming. Very talented singer. Some of the songs are slightly cheesy sometimes, but it was the late 80s. Great mix of hard rock, ballads, stadium rock and a couple of softer songs. A must listen album for anyone who loves music. "Paradise" is one of the greatest songs of all time. Lots of great stuff on that album. I discovered it when I was around 14. MTV played some of their videos and I was impressed and intrigued. If you want something that is more of a deep cut from this amazing band, I would recommend two different songs from their Psychotic Supper album. Change in the Weather is a song about dealing with how the world was changing as we approached the year 2000, while Freedom Slaves is about how America, despite calling itself the "land of the free", is a slave to the dual concepts of nationalism and consumerism. That second one is pretty powerful.

Right, they're underrated for their place among big ones. They're one of those "musicians" bands. Every rock musician I know who knows them loves them dearly for their combination of that raw and dirty rocking out and those well composed, well crafted and well produced songs. Their musicianship is not second to Van Halen or any other of that highly acclaimed bands.

Tesla has always been one of my favorites, ever since Mechanical Resonance. Other commenters are correct by saying you gotta give the rest of the catalog a listen, especially The Great Radio Controversy (#2) and Psychotic Supper (#3) - “Love Song” is their signature ballad, but lead guitarist Frank Hannon is an absolute maestro during the acoustic intro to the song. Tesla IS a thinking man’s rock band: technically gifted, thoughtful lyrics, rocking twin-guitar bombast of a solid “in the pocket” rhythm section. The bulk of their 14M record sales is “Five Man Acoustical Jam” - a terrific unplugged performance, featuring their cover of “Signs” by 70s rockers, Five Man Electrical Band. The band was called City Kidd, but changed their name to Tesla when recording their debut, Mechanical Resonance, based on Serbian inventor, Nikola Tesla… the follow up 2nd album, The Great Radio Controversy, contains many references to the investor’s mistreatment by his former mentor, Thomas Edison, and his omission from our history books at the time.

And sadly, Tesla died virtually penniless while his backer Westinghouse made millions off his inventions. But Tesla wasn’t really interested in money, other than being able to afford to do his experiments. For him, it was all about advancing science, particularly in the field of electricity. A fascinating story. BTW, The Great Radio Controversy was a reference to the patent battle between Tesla and Marconi over the invention of radio. Tesla ended up with the patent, after proving that he used radio waves to remotely control a toy boat before Marconi made his first broadcast. Unfortunately, most people still believe Marconi invented radio.

Got to meet Tommy, Brian and Troy when they were recording the follow up album to this: The Great Radio Controversy in Woodstock, NY at the Bearsville Studio. The stopped in to the local dive to see my buddies high school band play and were completely cool and laid back. Completely underrated band, definitely not a “hair band”. Just straight up, no frills rock.

What stood out to me was that the entire band were such great musicians. Whether electric or going full acoustic for performances like MTVs Unplugged, when you see the dexterity and the flair of how they played and the total group dynamic in their performance it is top end, no doubt. But while they might have gotten lumped into the hair metal scene because they played guitars and had long hair they were certainly never a "Glam" Metal outfit. In fact they always seemed to be one of the least commercial outfits out there, writing their music and playing their way without a lot of the over the top make-up, pyro and gymnastic style stunts that seemed to take over the genre. That made their success more notable to me because they were not a marketing machine. In a strange parallel with their namesake Nikolai Tesla they could also be said to be underappreciated for their great value.

They are often lumped in with 'hair metal' but they never 'really' subscribed to that label. They had all the building blocks from the 60s up to the 80s when the dropped this album. What separated them was the lyrical content. Most hair metal was sex drugs and party, Tesla was about history, philosophy and psychology. Even when they did a song about sex 'Makin' Magic' it was about the biological/psychological attraction underlying the raw emotions. Yes totally underrated and the only band other than Rush that I've seen live more than twice. (3 each). Check out 'Edison's Medicine' or 'Love Song'. Unfortunately, they are most known for the remake of 'Signs' which I actually don't like. It isn't Tesla, not even a bit.

Man, Tesla is still never far from the A-list for me, but they released Psychotic Supper my first year of high school, so I'm biochemically predestined to really remember it. But if by chance you read this comment and it matters: listen to "Edison's Medicine (Man Out of Time)" and "Song & Emotion". Man out of time kinda gives some meat to the band's namesake: Nikola Tesla, and S&E was written as a tribute to Steamin' Steve Clark from Def Leppard after his death. I wouldn't call Tesla hair metal. Their singer taught himself to sing along with the radio in the dump truck he drove before he was a singer. They're dead-center american hard rock, true to genre, and their "5 man acoustical jam" CD basically caused MTV unplugged to happen. "Signs" is a cover song they did on it that probably sold 10 million of those 14 million physical copies. Glad I checked back in on you two. Good pick. _nicko
