Showed this to my father (Matz Ekström) who played drums on this entire album and he absolutely loved your reaction! There’s a few other songs from the album that you probably would like, for an example ”A Sorcerer’s Pledge” and ”Under the Oak”. Matz would also like to recommend a song called ”The Tempter” from the band ”Trouble”. Keep up the good work!

Under the Oak, probably one of the best Candlemass songs ever. Still gives me goosebumps!

Candlemass is the quintessential doom metal band if one focuses on the sub-genre's fixation with fatalism and agony from more of a spiritual/religious perspective, their music tends to sound like long-running funeral marches through the moors at dusk or during the failing light just prior, hence they ascribe the term "epic doom metal" to their sound (the title of their first album, which "Solitude" came from is the Latin version of the same phrase). Overall a good starting band, particularly for people who are only familiar with Black Sabbath's take on doom metal through songs such as "Hand Of Doom" and "Into The Void". There are other subsets of doom metal that lean a bit closer to the stoner variety that includes a bit more of a political angst meets drug induced depressive state while still embodying the Sabbath sound as well in bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep, whereas more traditional bands in the style such as Saint Vitus and The Obsessed take a more generalized view of the sound that Black Sabbath pioneered and listen more like a composite of all of Sabbath's early 70s material, which is actually quite varied. Great reaction to this song, Johan Langquist's vocals are definitely an acquired taste and if you explore more of their material you'll find that the vocals largely sound different since he was only on their first album. Their next vocalist Messiah Marcolin has a bit more of an operatic sound to his voice and a somewhat less pitchy delivery, though the material that Thomas Vikstrom did on Chapter VI and the later material done by Robert Lowe (no relation to the actor) is probably the most accessible vocally speaking.

Glad you guys got to this. Candlemass is awesome. Them and the entire Doom genre is basically a throwback to the sound Black Sabbath pioneered. It was a stark contrast to the speed and technicality that had come to dominate metal in the late-70s/early-mid 80s. Solitude was from the album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, which is where the genre got its name. This was their only album where Johan Längqvist did vocals; Messiah Marcolin replaced him on the next album and he remained throughout their "classic" period and for their comeback. If you get to another Candlemass, I'd recommend Gothic Stone/The Well of Souls (former is a short intro). Frankly, I haven't heard another Doom band that holds a candle (ha!) to Candlemass, but the American band Trouble are quite good. I could recommend The Tempter from them.

the answer to the question "why is it called doom?": Well, in 1970 Black Sabbath creates metal and at the same time creates doom metal, but doom metal is not recognized until later. The name "Doom" comes from a song on the Paranoid album called "Hand of DOOM", it is believed that this is where the name was derived, as it is one of the most influential songs in the genre. The band's most influential doom songs are Hand of Doom, Black Sabbath, Under the Sun, Lord of This World, Snowblind, The Wizard, Into the Void, Children of the Grave, N.I.B, Sweet Leaf (which is also the first stoner doom metal song, I think), among others.

Paulo Figueiredo while I understand the idea behind it with the no growls, I just didn’t get into them as much after the early stuff hence that song.

Great to see that you liked Candlemass. They are such a fantastic band! You should give „Samarithan“ a try, if you want to give Candlemass another ride. But there are tons of other fantastic doom bands out there. Solitude Aeturnus - Upon Within, Count Raven - Nashira, While Heaven Wept - Vessel, Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart, Sorcerer - Crimson Cross. And that's just for starters *g*

Ah doom metal, an oft overlooked genre! My favorite doom band (so far) is actually a doom/black metal act from Canada called *Woods of Ypres.* They've disbanded now since their frontman died (car crash) in 2011 at the age of 31, but I still think they produced the ideal doom ambience: the mixture of the clean vocals, slow pace and morbidity of "standard" doom metal with the atmospheric elements and growled vocals of black metal, made for the perfect doom experience (i.e. depressing music that sounds amazing). Probably their best album (or at least my favorite) is Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth, their first full-length album (described by one critic as "metalized Pink Floyd"). Sucks that they don't exist anymore, but their 5th and final album (released after the death of their frontman) was good enough to win a Juno Award (Canada's Grammy Awards) for the best Metal/Hard Rock Album of the Year. Not bad for a bunch of boys from small town Ontario.

Guys. You should really react to Type O Negative song called Love you to Death You guys will be amazed by the voice of the singer and the atmosphere of the song. They were one of the most iconic bands during the 80's and also for gothic metal in general.
@jaymzb.17135 жыл бұрын
1st & 2nd parts of your statement are correct. Yes Type O Negative are a great band & the song Love You To Death has amazing vocals by Peter Steele. My personal Type O- faves are Gravity (Origin Of The Fecess version), She's Gone, In Praise Of Bacchus, Too Late (Frozen) & Kill All The White People The last thing you wrote though is incorrect. Type O Negative were using a different name prior to 1991 and their 1st album Slow, Deep and Hard was released in 91. So Type O- were not even a band in the 80s, though I wish they were around in the 80s, we would have even more good music from such a great band. RIP Pete. "Casket Crew 4Life" Peace

Great video! I love watching your reaction videos guys! When this album was recorded, Candlemass didn't have a singer. Johan Längqvist was singing only at this album, until recently, when he was joining the band as their new singer. After Epicus, dommicus... was recorded, Bror Alfredo Marcolin (also known as Messiah Marcolin as a singer) joined the band. Candlemass then made three fantastic albums at the late 80's and a live album 1990 with Marcolin as singer and those are considered by many fans to be the very golden age of Candlemass. Some songs from the first album was later re-recorded with Marcolin and released at later albums. Some of the songs from the first album are also aviable in a live version with Marcolin. Marcolin has a totally different voice and a way to sing. Moore deeper and with a tecniq reminding of opera. I wish you could do another reaction video with Candlemass and for that pick a song from any of the three studio albums with Marcolin. If you pick only one, I would highly recommend At the gallows end from the album Nightfall, released 1987. Regards and greetings from Sweden to you bros

Can also suggest mirror mirror or cry from the crypt by candlemass. But if you wanna throwback, Black Sabbath basically invented this genre with their self titled song "black sabbath" or check out Hand of Doom by them aswell. For a more modern turn as to where doom ended up. It kinda blended with stoner rock so check out Sleep. In my opinion Dragonaut and Giza Butler are their 2 best

About doom metal, my favorite band is Cathedral. Endtyme album is a good start. Songs like "Requiem for the sun" and "Alchemist of Sorrow" have that slow-paced groove that you enjoy. ;)
@Leodooom5 жыл бұрын
Why is it called (Epic) Doom Metal? Look at how the album is called, that should be clue enough ;) and yes, that's how influencial "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" was. As for other Doom songs (and maybe different takes on the Genre): CANDLEMASS - "The Samarithan" Embrace the voice of the second (and maybe most iconic singer) Messiah Marcolin and also probrably the most positive and uplifting lyrics you will EVER find in a Doom Metal song... and maybe in a Metal song in general. SOLITUDE AETURNUS - "Days Of Prayer" SA are probably a close second to CANDLEMASS in terms of status in the scene when it comes to Epic Doom Metal. They added a bit of groove to their songs, you should like it. Also, Rob Lowe on vocals is just savage. No wonder CANDLEMASS "borrowed" him for a few years :) SOLSTICE - "The Sleeping Tyrant" Well, this is something completely different. Driving mid tempo, English lyricism and melancholy, and a focus more towards the "epic" than the "doom" part. Overall though, "New Dark Age" is a gem and "The Sleeping Tyrant" one of the most amazing songs ever written to my ears. WHILE HEAVEN WEPT - "The Furthest Shore" You loved the epics by MEGADETH or METALLICA with all the transitions and changes in pace and tonality? You also digged the crazy melodicity and arrangements of NE OBLIVISCARIS? Then THIS will be the journey of a lifetime. 15 minutes of pure emotion. The speed especially in the beginning leads many people to believe that this is something other than Doom, but don't let the dynamics of the song fool you, it's one of the big, big and very underrated masterpieces. Have fun enjoying the rabbit hole that Doom Metal is!

This was a nice surprise to pop up for me while looking at KZbin, as I got this cd over 25 years ago. A pretty good debut, to say the least, as I played it to death. As they mentioned the singer, they should check out the next one after that: Messiah Marcolin! Try "Mirror, Mirror" for his operatic tone! This is the first time I've heard of this channel and I assume the guys are like myself where I like pretty much everything from death metal (duh!) to new age. Very cool vid and commentary, hope y'all continue to have fun with this for quite a while.

As usual, good insights and fair points. One thing for Ryan. If you’re not crazy about the vocals, you might like the cover of this song by Oceans of Slumber who you liked. It’s a GOOD cover. Maybe check out The Sword for more Doom. Also, I know you’ve done a lot of Megadeth, but all the songs you’ve done were from the same album. Maybe try the commercial side? See how they clean up? I’d recommend Trust, Almost Honest, Symphony of Destruction, Sweating Bullets, or She Wolf. Thanks as always!

You two should check out Scott "Wino" Weinrich's doom bands. The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and The Hidden Hand. The dude has been playing doom since the late 1970s, starting with Warhorse. This band became known today as The Obsessed. He also was the front man for another doom essential, Saint Vitus, being on four of their full length albums. Wino is such a big part of the doom scene that he was part of a collaboration to cover Black Sabbath's "The Wizard" with Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) of Black Sabbath along with Rob Halford of Judas Priest on vocals. Wino also had an appearance on Dave Grohl's side project "Probot." Best place to start with his work is either "Brother Blue Steel by The Obsessed" or Melancholy Grey by Spirit Caravan.
