I've seen them live back in the late eighties at a festival. The whole atmosphere changed when they hit the stage. As soon as the intro begun there were about 150 diehards entering the venue and made their way up to the front . After the set they walked straight out of the venue. They only came o see Candlemass...this whole album is a classic

In the 80's I was a programer for a club here in the Netherlands, and the moment I heard that Candlemass got to tour, I booked them. And no regrets. That concert, that night was magic. The way they were, and are still now, I still love that. All the people who were there, got a treat !!! Since that moment I'm a fan off them, Candlemass is doom , one of the corner stones. And yes they still put out new albums and still tour. Thanks for this superb reaction. Greets, Chris. P.s. Hope you do more doom reactions :)

I recommend anything from the repertoire of the band from Arlington, TX - Solitude Aeturnus (yes, that's their name, not Aeternal...), any song. The band has existed since 1987, their heyday was the '90s. The vocalist, Robert Lowe, later replaced Messiah on vocals in Candlemass ('07-'12). Great band, great musical atmosphere. And something extra, I recommend introducing Judson to the music of Paradise Lost... 🤘🤘 not necessarily with the old songs. I know them from the very beginning and I think I appreciate the latest albums a little more, although I started with "Gothic" and "Icon". Stay heavy, Judson too, even if he doesn't like Doom 🤣

I love that Richard stuck up for this song so hard. Judson's right though; speaking as a guy in a doom metal band, it's a narrow genre. But a very satisfying one if it clicks with you. Also: if he doesn't like the high falsetto vocal approach, Judson should listen to the re-recording with Robert Lowe. I daresay that version's even nastier.

The first two bands the organ is a key instrument in their music, whereas with Bell Witch it was introduced on their third album (Mirror Reaper), I believe, though that album (and their most recent one, where the organ features far more) is a single song at nearly an hour and a half long, so it wouldn't be for the channel haha

Would be fun to play him different versions of this songs with the different vocalists, and see which one he likes best. They have had some great vocalists over the years. The Lucifer Rising EP has a fun live set with Rob Lowe that I like the sound of. It's heavy but not perfect, and for whatever reason to me has that "nostalgia" kinda feeling of seeing a band in a bar or something. As an aside, tangentially related as their session vocalist was once a Candlemass vocalist, I'd recommend finding something from Opera Diabolicus - Death on a Pale Horse, I think Judson would like it. It's kind of epic doom, traditional heavy metal, and a bit of melodic death metal, with some occasional symphonic elements, and has a dramatic, theatrical sound. Varied and interesting, and Mats Leven (who was in Candlemass for a bit) puts in a great vocal performance.

@_Helm_
@_Helm_ Ай бұрын
as to a quicker tempo when it comes to doom. This style of epic doom shores up to power metal often so there is galloping rhythms and power metal sections, we go from molasses slow to a little above mid-tempo on this record. On other albums Candlemass straight up rips at times, but mostly this style is slow, yes. There is a lot of variation to wrestle out of the form, but it mostly happened in the trajectory from this album to the romantic styles of doom/death in the UK later (Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride) like 5 years later and that's kind of it for this style of doom, it no longer progresses or changes, though people still write epic doom once in a a while, it's on the whole seen as 'sub-candlemass'. As in, if not worse than the originators, at least heavily indebted to them. This album that you listened to the first song of is an absurdly influential album in the underground.
@_Helm_
@_Helm_ Ай бұрын
Judson because it seems you love musicology and the history of stuff to some extent to ask stuff like this: Doom was not a genre of metal before this album! Sabbath and other 70s originators were doomy (of course) but the term did not exist. Candlemass come post-thrash, with thrash technique like everyone else and they say while everyone's trying to be faster and more ripping, we'll go back to the source, to Black Sabbath. So this album (though Trouble existed before it) kind of is a return of metal to SLOW after more than a decade of exploring FAST. That has an immense aesthetic and philosophical effect for extreme metal on the whole because now metalheads (of the 90s especially) realize that there are many walls of extremity to push against, not just faster/harder all the time. Doom metal was necessary for heavy metal to reconnect with whatever avant-garde spirit it was gestating at the time. Lots of brilliant weirdness comes out of an - ostensibly - thrashy-power metal kind of outfit deciding to play at 60 bpm.

Yeah, you'd think that with such a limitation in tempo doom metal would be a narrow genre, but in reality it's in the top three most diverse metal sugenres along with black and death. Tempo isn't as big of a limitation as one might expect, especially when the limitation only sets a top speed. Doom can always be played slower which creates more creative space. That was essentially the idea behind "funeral doom metal"-- how slow can we play and still make something cohesive. It also blends with other genres exceedingly well. Doom metal is one of the oldest forms of metal so it's had a lot of time to evolve and adapt. Thrash metal, however, does have the problem you think a limitation in tempo would give; essentially, the faster you have to play the more limited you are in song structure. Doom metal is my second favorite form of metal behind black metal. My favorite styles of doom metal are, epic doom, folk/doom, death/doom and something I affectionately call "Witch Doom" which is any doom with a female vocalist--big influences from the occult rock band, Coven, from the 60s/70s.
