That trade happened before the franchise was moved to Utah and nobody knew it would be a #1 pick or that Magic Johnson would be in the draft. The Jazz team had Pete Maravich towards the end of his career and were in win now mode to try and save the franchise. It's the prime example of why teams put on lottery protections nowadays. There was an ABA team in Utah when the trade went down with a young Moses Malone as an up and coming player, but the merger forced him onto a new franchise
