This is the second video in the foam flintlock tutorial. If you missed the first one, check it out here➜ bit.ly/flplst43
In this video I show how I painted the flintlock pistol, giving the stock a woodgrain finish, and applying the metallic paints to the brass and steel parts. I take a little more time than usual so that you can see the painting process in real time rather than having quick cuts, hopefully to give a better feel for the painting technique.
Full disclosure: DecoArt provides me with paints to use in my videos through their Helping Artists program.

This looks really nice. An alternative for the gunmetal that works for me is to rub graphite from pencil lead into the black paint. It looks amazingly authentic.

I might give this a try because my sister fell in love with a pistol that looks almost like this that we found on our grandfather's attic but our father won't let her keep it. If I can get it done before her birthday, it'll make for an awesome present.

Great as always Chris, I don't have metallic wax nor anything of that type that you normally use, but I do have paint of those colors you usually use, so to create a similar effect I used my fingers with a bit of paint, take of the excess and then rub the paint on the object like crazy, and of course my hands at the end are a piece of art hahaha, good to see this technique, I may use it now on, so I don't get too messy with the paint, similar look that the one you get with wax, and with less money (at least where I live) Awesome job, you are indeed a magnificent artist. Maybe later on you could make a steampunk gun, like the nerf type, but not repainting a nerf gun, just making one that looks like one of those repaints, using tubes and stuff, would be cool to watch how you blow our mind with your creativity. Keep going, you are the best! :D

You've made some great patterns. What program do you use to draw out your patterns and is it free? I'm trying to design my own stuff, especially leather pieces. Also, what are you planning on making next? Is a sword next on the agenda? Or something more on the steampunk side?
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
Right now I use Affinity Designer to digitise my patterns. It's not free, but it is a very reasonable price and so far I haven't had to pay for an update. I would definitely recommend it. Not sure what I'll do next.......

Hey Chris, thanks a ton for this tutorial, but I've got a question: How sturdy is the pistol as you made it, can it stand up to rough handling? I'm mostly asking because I intend to use it for LARP and want to know if it'll hold up.
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on how rough you are talking about- it is still made of foam- but mine have been thrown all around, and still look pretty good. What I do notice though in the one I made for this video, is that the foam has a bit too much flex right above where your hand is on the handle. It kind of makes sense, the barrel is holding the stock nice and firm, and your hand is holding the grip, so any movement is isolated in the space between those. So.... I would add a strip of hard plastic or flattened pvc in between the two foam halves just in that section (hollow out a little space for it) Also, I have made another one, but I added a third 5mm sheet of foam in the center between the two others, and that added thickness also helped to stiffen it up.

Hey Chris, amazing work as always, and I like it pretty much except for one thing. that brass color is just off. It's more like sulfur with a metallic shine. Other than that it's really cool. Next time try rose gold mixed with a little bit of burnt umber, it is a really cool brassy color.
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
I will definitely give that a try. Which rose gold paint do you use?
@Bloodray19
@Bloodray19 6 жыл бұрын
Well, it's an ukrainian brand called Rosa Studio, I just use it, cause it's the easiest to get here. I think any rose gold would do the job. By the way thanks for replying, it feels cool :)

How do you like the acrylic metallic paint compared to Rub & Buff?
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
I actually really like it. I've use RNB, water based metallic pastes, and now this, and right now it is my favourite. (other things would still have their place in the right instances though) . It has no odour, and because it is a paint rather than a paste, it seems to maybe have more binder in it?? which means, at least from my experience that it doesn't rub off as quickly. Also one of those jars like I use in the video will last you 7 lifetimes! The one thing I don't like quite as much about the paint, is it seems to have a coarser sparkle, if that makes sense, so if you turn the painted piece in the light, you see individual sparkles a bit more than using the paste finishes. Still, I am really happy with it.

Si Devon a better term would also be weathered and used, he's dressed as a 17ty century pirate who'd be going around plundering and shooting that gun alot, it wouldn't look all brand new , it'd look roughly like that all faded, used and dirty
