These guys never recovered after Stefan and Magnus’ departures. Their first two records are power/heavy metal masterpieces. Crimson Thunder is also a very good record. Threshold is their last good studio album IMO. The ones that came after it are very forgettable, with a few good tracks.

@@individuummusic1249 Räfling decided to leave on his own. I don't know all the details, but he was a lot younger than the rest of the band and was just kinda thrown into things quickly because he had played with Joacim in Highlander/Lost Horizon previously. He was initially up for being part of the band going forward, but I think he lost a close family member during the recordings for Legacy Of Kings and this sorta downed his excitement for music in general. He told the guys that he didn't have his heart in Hammerfall anymore and would leave the moment they could find a replacement. He finished the Legacy Of Kings recordings and did the subsequent world tour as a favor to Hammerfall.

When I was 16 I was kind of familiar with Metallica, The Offspring, Nirvana and some others. But when I saw this on the the Dutch music channel TMF, Hammerfall sucked me deeper in the world of metal. Also Within Tempation and Death were on tv. Soon after this I discovered Blind Guardian, In Flames and Iced Earth. It blew me away!

That's because there is not the same rock & metal festival scene in the US. The reason metal can thrive in Europe, is because small bands can play big festivals, garner lots of new fans there, which they can take with them to big venues throughout Europe. It's a whole cycle basically
