I watched these psychedelic pioneers perform at the 1969 New Jersey Pop Festival in Altlantic City. I now worship the theramin and Space hymn even at age 74 years of age. Go figure.

Wow, revisiting this, I didn't realize Lothar & Hand People were into theremin! I recently in my explorations acquired a theremin and am having some fun wit it. Full circle. I'm 71 and single, Harry. :)

This album along with The Mothers of Invention and The Fugs set the stage for my musical taste from then on. Not sure a 16 year old should start out like that cause I'm pretty out there.

I was invited to perform with them on stage at a Whiskey A / GO - GO in Denver Colorado's Colfax Avenue. That was 1965 - 1966 Winter/Spring and Cold there outside. I was a young recruit @ tech school @ the US Air Force Base there. I think it was Johnny Rivers who put the first A-GO/Go's into the vast wasteland of Newton B. Minnow's neighborhood. Kinda like a Starbucks but with whiskey & bands. First mate check your identification. Only beer an 18 year old can get served is the 3.2% alcohol in Colorado. Today, marijuana is legal. I'll bet mountain climbing is about to be on the decline. A few losses on the upswing I've heard of in the news. Not for me I quit at Woodstock, 3 days of Peace and Music, New York, 1969. Machines was their big hit, back then. I always appreciate the opportunity to write from my remembrances. Besides between the First estate and the Fifth estate what else is there to write about?

I still remember the bass line of the first few measures of a great original rock tune that they played during '65 when gigging at "The Exodus" in Denver. It's not among these tracks which are way different that the stuff I remember them playing.

"Capitol Records released two albums by this short-lived band: "Presenting ... Lothar and the Hand People" (1968, produced by Robert Margouleff) and "Space Hymn" (1969, produced by Nick Venet). A Rolling Stone review described Lothar and the Hand People's music: "It is electronic country, a kind of good-time music played by mad dwarfs, and it is really good to listen to. There is no tension here, no jarring forces at war with each other. It may be strange that New York, the city which deifies speed and insanity, could produce this music, but it is as if Lothar and the Hand People have gone through this madness and come out on the other side, smiling." LOTHAR AND THE HAND PEOPLE: John Emelin - Vocals Paul Conly - Keys, Synth, Theremin Rusty Ford - Bass Tom Flye - Drums Kim King - Guitar

I actually HAD a working THERAMIN! I bought it from the Edmund Scientific Co. (a mail order place in New Jersey). A guy put it together (very simple and light, the size of a shoebox, not expensive) in exchange for me lending him their 2 albums to record. It worked! [Not the volume, but the frequency went from very low to too-high-to-hear. It plugged into my crummy little stereo. No hands! (at least no touching required) Not a "fake" (but beloved) theramin like the Beach Boys used on "Good Vibrations".
